Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

Appearance: Pours a murky red amber color. The beer looks almost flat.

Smell: Dark sour funk with tart cherries up front. There is a sweet undertone throughout.

Taste: The flavor is quite tart with lots of cherrie tartness. I'm also getting a lot of oak. The sour notes fade a bit towards the finish which is fruity.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: The funky notes overpowered the fruit a bit much, but I enjoyed it enough.

Shared by yourefragile. Thanks Michael.

The beer is hazy and ruby orange colored with a small off white head. The aroma offers funk and cherries, though not as vibrant as the raspberry version. Decent flavor. Nice cherry taste but not as popping as I would prefer. Pretty good.

Large bottle, caped and waxed, Bottled 9/12, purchased for $20 at the source.

The pour is murky brown almond butter darker amber. Darker tan head, on the loose side, stays a bit, then goes to minimal film and light fine spots and thicker strands of lacing on the glass.

Slightly over ripe cherry on the nose, along with some musty earth.

Notes of more cherries, light wood, moderate acidity, more musty/earthy character. Complex, super smooth and easy drinking for the style. I imagine a year or two in the bottle might smooth things out and I'm sure other changes might kick in, but this is drinking mighty fine right now.

Moderatly sour, quite flavorful and highly enjoyable.

(from looking at the reviews of last years version, I'd say this years is a major improvement)

Bottle (2011)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, cosmicevan!

(Aged for 1 year)

A dark, cloudy, almost chunky dark cherry in color (sort of a dark brown crimson and burgundy). There's floating bits of wood and/or cherry. Thick and full of sediment. Not a pretty beer, by any degree of measurement.

The aroma is quite strong and powerful: big notes of sour cherry lead the way, along with oaken barrel, some acidic character, and earth.

The flavor is moderately sour and full of cherry flavor, along with mild barrel, mild earthy funk. Complete and flavorful, though a sour cherry beer as opposed to a kriek.

Full in body, almost chewy, with low carbonation.

A distinctly American sour cherry ale.

Bottled 7/2011. Thanks for sharing, Jeff!

A: Pours a murky diarrhea color, but I did get a bottom pour. Other glasses were clearer and redder. Bubbly film for a head, no lace.
S: Funk, sour notes, and little bit of fruit. Pretty muted all around though.
T: More muted fruit but some sour cherry pits are noticeable. Funk, yeast, sourness and acid dominate. Aftertaste is a bit fruity but kinda dirty tasting.
M: Greasy, slick, smooth, low bubbles, not bad. Light tartness.
O: Not my favorite, but still a decent drinking sour. Fruit was too muted though.

750 mL bottle, allowed to warm to near cellar temperature before being poured into my Brooklyn Brewery tulip.

Captain Lawrence's Barrel Select Cherry is a bit of a gusher when first opened, foaming up and out of the bottle. It eventually pours an unattractive, murky color that's somewhere between brown and maroon. There's a little bit of khaki colored foam sitting atop the beer, but head retention and lacing are minimal. The nose is of cherries and cherry pits, the latter of which fades into a bit of oaken woody notes. That's all played against by a lightly vinegary, tart aroma. The cherry fades a bit in the flavor profile, leaving more room for wood and acidity. The result is to the beer's detriment however, as the influences from the oak and the bugs are a bit too prominent, rendering the beer a little on the harsh side. The body is on the lighter side, without being bone dry, suggestive of this being a higher ABV wild ale. The carbonation could stand to be just a little bit livelier. The Barrel Select Cherry was my least favorite of the samples poured at the last Captain Lawrence release, but it's still a solid sour beer. I'm looking forward to checking out the Barrel Select Raspberry and the Cuvee de Castleton in the near future.

Thanks to SpeedwayJim and Capra12 "Suitcase Jon" for providing me w/ this brew! These 2 gentleman have become good friends of mine, they are extremely generous, and are a great asset to the beer community.

Pours a medium brown mahoghany in color w/ red hues, w/ a 1/2 finger white head that leaves nice sticky lacing. Aromas of cherry skins, oak, and funk. The taste started off w/ mild cherry sweetness and slight acidity, which lead into oak and a touch of vinegar, and finished w/ wet socks/wet dog. Thin bodied, but lush. Pretty easy to drink.

Overall, solid, but kinda lackluster and not memorable. The major lack of sourness and being classified as an American Wild Ale really hurts this beer and it's scores. However, I happen to really enjoy Flanders Reds, and this brew felt to me as if it fits more into that category. Viewing this as a Flanders Red, not anywhere near the best I have had, but it's solid and I would gladly drink it again.
