On tap at The Black Rabbit in NYC
Captain Lawrence is another New York brewery that I don't see in Boston. I was impressed last time I went to New York. Their Brown Ale pours a clear, garnet brown and is topped by a light brown head that fades to a film leaving spots of lace. The aroma is malty: toasty, bready, and chocolate notes as well a hint of fruit.
Toasty and roasty upfront. Chocolate notes and a bit of sweetness in the center. The finish has a light, roasted bitterness. Light-to-medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation. The roasted malts give a nice husky character.
A nice session beer.

First had: on tap at Captain Lawrence, Elmsford, NY
Woody brown pour, slightly hazy, with a ringlet of white bubbles for a head; dots of lacing on the glass. Nutty aroma, roasted malts and toasted grains, some leafy and earthy hop notes, perhaps more pronounced than your average brown ale. Sweet bready malts in the taste, slightly roasty, caramel, toasted grains, leafy hops give a drying bitterness in the finish. It's a brown ale. Medium body, well-balanced and drinkable for the style.

On tap at Delta Grill, NYC. Pretty clear overall, nice rich brown color, with a good sized white head. Retention is also good, decent lacing sticks to the glass. Standard aroma is mostly bready malt, nothing profound or overly rich, a little toasty and nutty. Flavor is very much the same, little in the way of hops, maybe a touch of grassy bitterness in the drying finish, light chewy malt, a slight mineral/metallic aspect I found unappealing.
Carbonation and body both medium, easy to drink, but not at all exceptional for me. Not the most exciting style to begin with but the combination of the mineral note with a somewhat boring malt character made this one ultimately forgettable.

On tap, poured into taster. Pours a brown tinted clear. Nice thick foamy head. Smells of sweet malty caramel.
Taste is of malty caramel and slight hop. Easy drink that did not impress me. I usually love CL beers, but this one didnt seem as good as most of their brews...its a bit thin. Dont get me wrong, its still good and deff drinkable, and low abv...all which makes this a great session brown.

A - Pours an almost clear brown color with a touch of red mixed in and a finger of frothy off-white head atop. The head fades at a normal pace leaving behind some good lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of rich sweet caramel malt with a nice mix of nuttiness and some earthy hops. There is a bit of brown sugar and bready malt.
T - Starts off with some rich sweet caramel and nutty malts with some earthy hops in the background. Through the middle, some brown sugar sweetness and bready malts come through. Finish is a mix of caramel and nutty malts with a nice backing of light earthy hops.
M - Medium-light bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a crisp sweet finish.
D - Very drinkable. Very nice sessionable brown ale. The richness and the sweetness of the malt is nice and also well balanced by the other flavors.

Pours a dark chocolate brown color with a one finger light beige head that settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic streaks and spots of lace left behind.
Slightly roasted chocolate malt aroma with hints of toffee, nut and caramel. There is also a faint earthy hop presence but the nose is dominated bythe sweeter malt notes.
Fuller bodied than expected with a slight creamy texture and lots of sweet malt flavor. Slightly toasted with hints of cocoa, caramel, toffee and oatmeal before finishing with slightly bitter hop character. Well balanced, flavorful and easy to drink. This was a pleasant surprise.

On tap at the Pony Bar, NYC
Pours a dirty brown color with a creamy beige head that left some lacing as it settled.
The aroma is malty, lots of brown bread notes. The brew has a brown sugar scent as well.
The taste is of brown bread with caramel sweetness. There is a light earthiness to the brew, perhaps some wood notes. There is also some notes of honey and brown sugar.
The beer has a moderate body with fizzy carbonation. Sweet yet balanced on the palate; finishes with some lemony astringency.
Overall, a nice brown ale, sweet and smooth.
