A - Dark mahogany brown with some dark brown and ruby hues on the edges. Large, creamy, frothy, fizzy, light beige head with decent retention with a thin film of lace left.

S - Dark malt with slightly burned caramel and molasses along with a touch of bready malt. Slight tartness with some date, raisin, and prune. Smells like a sweet molasses cookie with some dates in it.

T - At first there is a touch of slightly roasted dark malt with some caramel and molasses. This provides a sweet base for the dark fruit that comes up a bit later. Dates, prunes, and raisins provide a sweet sticky taste along with an increase in the molasses taste. The fruit also has a very subtle tartness and there is a faint hoppy bitterness that comes out. Overall, like the aroma, it reminded me a bit of a molasses cookie with chunks of date in it, or a sticky dark fruit molasses syrup. Finishes with a touch of spice (particularly pepper).

M - Full to medium body with moderate carbonation. Rich with a slight creaminess that becomes more sticky toward the finish.

D - Decent drinkability. The sweetness brings it down a bit, but it is enjoyable to drink and doesn't kill the palate. A nice beer to sip that I would enjoy every now and then.

Notes: Best before 13/09/10. Well made and a solid example of the style. A fairly sweet beer that made for a nice sipping beer. I enjoyed drinking this, although I wasn't necessarily blown away, rather just continually pleased. Worth trying as it is a tasty beer and a good Doppelbock.

Nice deep reddish brown. Tan head is thick and frothy with decent lacing.
Really sweeet caramel smell... slight fruit/banana/herb smell
Taste isn't as sweet as smell leads me to believe. Still sweet, but thought it smelled better than it tasted.
This coats my mouth with a medium body that seems a little undercarbonated to me.
Not bad, but I probably won't get it again. It could be worse, but this one just isn't for me.

Served from a 1 pint 1 fl oz brown bottle with freshness date on back.

Appearance: Translucent dark brown that with a fizzy tan head that leaves an ok lace.

Smell: Aromatic black treacle with dark fruit similar to prunes and raisins Some bread qualities as well.

Taste: Malty. Black treacle again along with the same bread and dark fruit qualities that were in the nose. I can't really make out much in hops except for a slight hoppy type dryness toward the end. Twang of alcoholic acridness and maybe a bit of smoke and unsweetened chocolate also on the end.

Mouthfeel: Rich. Pretty full bodied and smooth. Could be described as syrupy but not in a bad way.

Impressions: Very nice. Bold flavors and lots of them. Bit strong on the alcohol though, so be careful

Doppelbocks are so delicious. I don't know why I don't drink them more often.

A - Pours a chestnut-brown, with a good two fingers of froth and nice retention, some spotty lace.

S - The aroma is pungently raisiny, malty, with a slight cherry nuance, and a tinge of alcohol

T - The flavor is rich and malty, with a sublime sweetness tempered by a caramelized-roasted malt, imparting tons of dark fruit and bread, pumpernickel, raisin, fig, date, cherry, etc. Doppelbocks, in general, are so rich and complex; this is no exception.

M - A little slick for my liking. The only negative.

D - Awesome. Pair it with rich food, or guzzzle it out of a paper bag like a hobo, great either way.

16.9oz bottle, pilsener, no freshness date, but who ever heard of such a thing on a doppelbock?

I poured this softer than I often do and got an OK but not towering lager head. What is there comes in the standard cream color that often pairs with rich red, woody brown brews such as this.

The nose is full of buttery toffee and plump fruit. Plum, caramel, lead, raisin, buttered toast, and alcohol.

Bready malt drizzled with caramel, buttered, and spread with a layer of plum marmalade judiciously sweetened. A very rich package with some, but not as much as I taste in many doppelbocks, clean lager yeast. This is a deep beer. It is loaded with dark overripe fruits and salted caramel but is tempered by a noticeable hop bitterness and leafy noble flavor.

Good carbonation where it could have gone over the top in a lager sort of way.

I wish very much that this were distributed widely. I found it in Springfield, MO several weeks ago and I believe it was the cheapest imported doppelbock on the shelf. Well worth the $2.39, it would be a staple at that price.

Beer is a deep mahogany color with a full head and nice carbonation. It has a sweet aroma that is a mixture of caramel & a trace of fruit. Taste is creamy with some sweetness. A great full body that bathes the mouth and goes down smooth and easy with no alcohol kick you might expect. This is the most drinkable beer I have had in Germany.

Had this beer on tap in a small pub just outside of Nurnberg, Germany.

Bier gersmackt gute!

A - Pours with two fingers of light brown head on top of a perfectly clear, amber-brown body. The foam settles at an average rate and leaves nice lace.

S - Rasiny malt aroma with lots of toffee and dark bread crusts. Some caramel and brown sugar as well. Otherwise very clean with no yeast or hop character, nothing but malt.

T - Sweet, creamy malt up front with toffee and dark caramel flavors. Some raisin and plum notes in the middle that darken in the finish as burnt caramel and light roasted malt character takes over. Lingering dark sugar character in the aftertaste with a hint of spicy alcohol.

M - Thick, smooth body, moderate carbonation, and a sweet finish with some alcohol warmth.

D - Nice doppelbock, the aroma is spot on, but the flavor is just a little lacking. There is a complex blend of rich malt characteristics in the aroma, and while some of this complexity carries over into the flavor, it is not as enjoyable. There is a bit too much roasted grain taste and the finish could be smoother than it is. There are a few superior examples of the style, but this is likely better than most.

Tucher Bajuvator Doppelbock was a medium brown in color with a modest beige head that rapidly faded to a thin collar.

The aroma was largely a sweet malt with a prunish background.

The taste was caramel malt sweetness and biscuity. Bajuvator really had an enjoyable flavor to it.

It looked to be a little thin in mouth feel, but as it warmed, it firmly established itself as medium bodied. Carbonation was sufficient for the style.

Drinkability was very good, the ABV was reasonable and the flavor excellent. I would have loved to have another.

A - Poured into a big mug. Dark mahogony body with some deep ruby hues. Dark brown in the dead middle of the beer where light can't quite make it through. Foamy 2-finger off-white/khaki head that fades pretty quickly settling to a 1/8-inch cap on top. Very nice sticky lacing on the glass.

S - Dark ripe fruits, especially cherries. Strong malty backbone with some chocolate notes. Just a touch of alcohol in the back. Somewhat bready and more so as it warms.

T&M - Big and malty up front then the sweetness of ripe cherries comes through. Medium carbonation lends a slight dry feeling. Chocolate notes on the tail end of the malt. The alcohol is noticable only in the way that it lends a really nice spiciness to this beer. Other spice flavors in this beer I can't quite put my finger on.

D - Hardly notice the ABV. It is well hidden in this beer and lends a great spiciness to it. Great flavors all around and not overpowering in the cherry department. I'd love to sip this all night.

Tucher makes an exceptional Weiss and especially a dunkel that is the most delicious of all German beers I have tried so I was open to a dopplebock, and not only for the higher alcohol count.

The dark flowing and medium carbonation of this beer lured me in and its smells included fruit, yeast, oats and grains, a little lemony hint.

The taste blew me away with an abundance of bold wheat and oats, tiny spice, very little hop, then sweetness. What a tasting experience.

Drinkable and smooth, worthy of another try, and another.

Actually I stumbled upon it and I can't find it other than one little store I was in. I have to go back and set it up for my beer club as this month's winner.

A - Poured a deep, rich copper with ruby highlights when backlit. A minor head quickly broke down.

S - Some good malts. You pick up some sugar and alcohol notes as well. At first, I detected some soy sauce but that has subsided as it warms up.

T - A chewy malty-ness. Nicely sweet but not cloying. I've had sweeter dopppelbocks. Notes of caramel, smoke, and alcohol. Some roasted notes get through at times.

M - Medium leaning towards light mouthfeel. Slight carbonation. very drinkable especially for the style.

Overall, I could probably have a few of these, so tread lightly. I'd love to try it on tap. Very tasty and recommended.

I wanted to try some of the better German bottles out there, and found this picked this dopppelbock up from the beers of Europe website and consumed it at my dad's house on a visit to the UK.

An dark amber coloured pour quickly produces a frothy tan coloured head, which shows good retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet bread, dark fruit, toasted nuts and caramel. The flavour is much the same, which in this case is a good thing, as the nose is excellent. Rich layers of raisin, chocolate, pecan and brown sugar overlay a strong sweet bready malt background. Above all else its an intensely fruity doppelbock, and as rich as any fruitcake. A moderate bitterness helps to keep the sweetness in check. The finish is both slightly drying and warming. In spite of the high sugar level the body thankfully never strays above medium and a nicely active carbonation keeps things interesting.

This is an extremely drinkable doppelbock, and I can see why its highly regarded. The sheer intensity of its fruitiness sets it apart from its rivals and the malt is the star of the show here. If I had ready access to this gem it would certainly be a regular in my fridge.

Poured from a brown 16.9 oz. bottle. Has a very dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is malty with a touch of sweetness. Taste is rather mild with some maltiness and finishing bitter. Feels creamy in the mouth. A bit heavy on the stomach for continued drinking. Overall this is an average brew.

A- This beer pours a dark walnut brown clear body that is a bit dense. There is a thick light tan head that is supported by strands of tiny bubbles gliding to the surface.

S- The dry caramel notes smell like cold wort with a mellow roasted hint and a slight biscuit malt note.

T- The rich malty caramel notes is a bit sweet with a toasted flavor that dries out the finish. There is a soft green note in the finish that increase just a bit as the beer warms.

M- The medium mouthfeel has more of a fullness on the tongue when the head is full and no real alcohol heat noted.

D- This beer is delicious. There is a great rich flavor of blended malt flavors and is just sweet enough to give it depth without being sugary.

Got this at Bert's Bierhuis in Utrecht.

Into a beer mug.

APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger medium looking fluffy off-white head that quickly pops and fades down to a thin film. Colour is a dark brown, kind of burnt umber with rust hues. Some carbonation evident. A thin ring of film remains and leaves a bit of splotchy lacing on the glass. A bit better than the norm.

SMELL: A mild nose of toasted and caramel malts. A touch of toffee and some dark fruits as well, such as plumbs and grapes. A nice nose, but a little too mild to be really noticeable.

TASTE: This was much more impressive. A bold and pronounced taste profile including toasted and caramel malt with hints of sweet toffee up front. Some plumbs, raisins and dark grapes round out the middle, along with a touch of nuts as well. A bit of hop bitterness at the end with hints of pure chocolate as well. The bitter-sweet aftertaste is strong and long lasting. Maybe the best taste profile I've had in the style so far. Good stuff.

PALATE: Medium-full body, thick and creamy smooth with medium carbonation. Goes down smooth with a slight bit of a scratch at the end and finishes with a touch of stickiness. Pretty nice.

OVERALL: A great doppelbock for sure; drank away very easily. Perhaps the best taste profile as of yet, but unfortunately the weak nose held it back a tad in the ratings. This is one I'll be picking up again for sure. Recommended.

bottle served into a tulip glass

Pours a ruby-flecked cocoa brown, the exact shade changing like a chameleon. The one-finger head was almost grey before diminishing to a trace ring with minimal lacing.

Lots of yummyness going on in the nose (yumminess -- that's the technical term, I believe). Dark fruits abound: raisin, plum. Even cherry. The malts show up too, but always tempered with the fruit aromas. Sweet and syrupy and caramely.

The flavors follow the nose, except, as can be expected, the sweet malts are dominant. Deep plum and such fruity esters wash over and stay on the back of the tongue. Something leafy on the finish too... tobacco, maybe? It gives a slight trace of smoke on the finish to dance around with the plum.

Given how sweet this beer is, I was surprised that the mouthfeel wasn't gloopily thick. Its still fairly thick, not quite creamy but not thin in any sense. For me, I wouldn't want to have more than one of these at a time. This dopplebock isn't cloyingly sweet, but its not exactly easy on the palate at the same time.

A great dessert beer, an exciting possibility for a meal pairing and a very good dopplebock, period. This is a must-try.

Got this from a buddy for helping him work on his truck over the weekend.

Bottle poured into a weissen glass.

A- A dark amber at the bottom changing as you move up to dark brown with red around the edges topped off with a thick, chunky tan head that had great retention.

S- Caramel, dark fruit and a touch or syrup.

T- Alot of the smell with the addition of malts. Almost sweet.

M- Super smooth almost slick. Not too thick or thin.

D- Awesome! I got to the bottom and was looking for another. I'll be picking up more of this. My new favorite dopplebock!

appearance- a very dark chestnut color with a thick tan head. the head was well retained with great lacing

smell- a dark fruit aroma with malt and caramel.

taste/mouthfeel- Amazing. The taste was fruity with a bit of wheat/bread and malt. Leading flavor is a sense of dark fruit which really is greaet. The beer was thick and smooth with a heavy body

drinkability- a fantastic beer. I did not expect to enjoy this beer so much. I highly expect to purchase this beer again soon and to anyone reading this review, please message me suggestion on food pairings :)

Bajuvator's reminiscent of dark fruit in color. Quite a bit of light cuts through and reveals some attractive ruby highlights. It's topped with an off-white head that's a couple of fingers deep. It was very quick to recede and lacing was very, very light.

The nose is heavy on dark fruit up front. A mix of raisin and plum permeates throughout and smells really nice. There's definitely a malty quality to it, but it easily takes a back seat to dark fruit. Light roasted malt seems to sum it up pretty well. There may be a little chocolate, but that's far from apparent on the nose. A little earthiness and a light tobacco scent emerge on the tail. It's not deep or complex, but it definitely has a nice smell to it.

The flavor tracks the nose very well, but features a few surprises. Dark fruit flavors are very prominent throughout. Raisin and plum have a nice tangy flavor that starts things out nicely. The malty aspect of this beer is more apparent in flavor. Roasted malt is easily noted, but there's also a little chocolate that wasn't apparent on the nose. The chocolate flavor is light and cocoa-esque. There's also a hop presence that adds a slight spicy bite. Didn't pick that up on the nose either. At the secondary level, it is a little earthy. Light tobacco and molasses are present. The flavor's definitely deeper than I expected and it's quite good. Not quite good enough to reach the '4.5' level, but probably a little better than a '4.0.' Damn....where's the tenths button?

The body is a pushing the heavier side of medium and is very smooth. Carbonation is dialed way down and smooths it out quite a bit. Very impressive. Drinkability is likewise very high. I was really close to pulling the '4.5' trigger for flavor and feel absolutely compelled to do it here. The flavor is very good and it goes down extremely smooth and easy. I'm enjoying this bottle quite a bit.

Tucher's Bajuvator Doppelbock is damn good beer. It's my first experience with Tucher and I'm impressed. It has a lot of flavor and is a nice representation of the style. I'm absolutely certain that it's better than the score here will reflect simply because the flavor's a little better than a '4.0.' I just don't think it's quite '4.5' good. Nonetheless, this is definitely a Doppelbock that you should check out. Damn good stuff.

A: Dark, murky brown, amber light coming through on the edges, sticky two-finger head, looks tasty!

S: Raisins, dark fruits, grapes, fresh-baked bread, like a bakery with fresh raisin nut muffins baking

T: Dried fruits, nuts, kind of like a fruity trail mix, I think I tasted a little sweet pinot wine, a bread/biscuity finish, smooth malts, subtle alcohol...absolutely delicious

M: thick, rich, filling....this beer warmed me to the core, the alcohol seeps out, slowly traveling in waves, went down easy for the abv

D: I could drink many of these in a row if the abv wasn't so sneaky! Absolutely phenomenal!

500 ml bottle poured into Pilsner glass. Born on date.

A - This poured an incredibly dark ruby amber with a decent loose tan head. Not long-lasting in full-form but it topped the beer for more than half the drink and featured legs on the glass due to it's stregnth.

S - Uber robust roasted malt aroma and crazy sweet with honey, molasses, bits of chocoalte, caramel, and some yeast and wheat too. Hops seems totally absent. While it was a multi-dimensional smell, it was utterly dominated by how malty sweet it was.

T - Too sweet on the palate as the robust malt burst fourth. Alcohol warming too coming up through my nose as I drank. Beyond the sweetness I get nothing but roasted malts and honey and molasses tiny undertones. Pretty good but unbalanced, too sweet, and fairly one-dimensional in the flavor. The sweetness seemed to come from sugar as opposed to malts.

M - Smooth and slick going down. Its a much fuller beer due to the heavier feel of the body. Dense.

D - I could have two of these. It's roasted bitterness offsets the sweetness of the malts pretty well and leaves it a little more drinkable [Edited 6-30-09]

A tasty doppel that is very heavy in the molasses, figs, raisins, and dark fruits (plums, black cherries)...also has a dusting of chocolate powder in the aroma and taste...

Sweeter flavored...personally I like this better than Celebrator...really a nice inviting aroma and a rich, sweet flavor...body is medium..perhaps a little syrupy...
