This place is great. Let me start by saying that the best part is the atmosphere at least in my opinion. Me and some friends went there on a nice late summer afternoon and the temp. was mild and not too humid. We got to sit outside in the nice little garden they have on the opposite side of the bar. The bar area also looks cozy and inviting for summer and especially for colder days.
Tried the spicy blonde Belgian ale which was very good and refreshing with hints of ginger. Very palate cleansing I also tried the cask IPA which was above par.
Service is respectable but nothing to write home about. The beer selection is good for a small brewery. Food was very delicious a served promptly. the beers were good and very interesting (Agave Wheat Ale).
Would definitely go again.

I decided to stop here based on other BA reviews. What a great place. Situated in a hip neighborhood in an old building that is nicely remodeled. I had a single hop IPA called Lomik to start things off - it was excellent. I followed that with a Belgian IPA that was very good. Cuban Pulled Pork w/ beans and rice for dinner was fantastic. This is a great stop if you're visiting St. Louis - big time recommendation.

I've been to Square One a few times, and the fact I've made it a point to stop by when traveling through St. Louis should go a long way in conveying my thoughts. The atmosphere is pleasant, the food good and the beers above average. Whilst there have been a few average brews, the few that have been less than desirable were nonetheless interesting experiments (ie. an IPA utilizing only one hop) and as such, I don't fault Square One. A nice combination of food and micro-brews, and definitely worth visiting at least once when in the St Louis area.

Situated in Lafayette Square district, less than 1 block from Lafayette Park where we play vintage base ball frequently. Each time we have a match there we always allow time for Square One afterwards.
Usually around 12 different types of own brewed on tap, I've tried around 7 or 8 of the 12 and found that I really liked the Spicy Blonde, the Light Squared and the Barvarian Weizen beers.
Overall their menu is very reasonably priced with a nice selection of salads and appatizers to start off with. Sandwiches are generally priced around $6 to $9 (the Jerk Chicken and Reuben are awesome) with fuller dinners in the $15 range.
Overall very nice place to take friends or visiting family for dinner or hang out in the bar area with buddies on a warm afternoon.

really cool spot. old wood bar with an old church style window looking out to the back patio. bit copper still visible and a large chalk board with the days beers posted. all of the beers we tried were good, with the single malt scotch ale maybe being the pick of the day. food was nice, homemade sausage plate, very tasty. and the beer pretzels were amazing as well. tried a glass of their whiskey too, which was surprisingly mellow. service was very friendly and knowledgable, while the bartender wasnt too hard on the eyes. overall a great place to have some late lunch and beers, as prices were fair and the atmosphere was awesome.

Visited on a tip from BA bhalter, thanks Ben!
Situated in the Lafayette square area, we were able to visit for a late lunch on a Friday. The bar area was half full and only a few tables were occupied in the dining area. Pretty cozy area with a variety of rooms, we sat on the heated patio. Brewing rooms litrally in the middle of the building, and they were brewing while we were there. Outdoor biergarten looked like it would be great in summer. Overall a solid facility, though I would suggest that the bar might be a tad too small for Friday nights.
They had about 12 of their own beers on tap - one of the wider selections I've seen in a brewpub, especially considering they varied a lot in style: I did 2 samplers and was able to try 6oz of 8 of their beers. Frankly, their beers were average on the aggregate. Nothing was bad but nothing spectacular either. I had the maple stout, weizen, ipa, German ipa, porter, french oak saison, dubbel, and scotch ale. The Saison that was probably my favorite. I would have liked to try some of their spirits though - nice to see craft distilling taking off!
Real star here was the food. Fresh with some creativity and presentation style. I went with a Cuban pork and black beans/rice dish, which was tasty. Others in my group raved about their meals as well. The pretzels we shared as an appetizer weren't traditional but were excellent, and we split two dessert dishes and both the brownie and apple empanada were good. I can't remember the last time I had 3 courses at a brewpub but everything was so good we just wanted to keep eating! They were pretty dead, so we got some especially attentive and helpful service.
Overall I really enjoyed square one. So glad I went here as my only real beer-dedicated stop in St. Louis. Go to enjoy the beer, come home raving about the food. I've been to countless brewpubs and this is one of my favorites.

I think that Square One Brewery is an excellent place and a must go to spot if you're in the Saint Louis area.
I went to Square One Brewery three times during a recent four day trip to St. Louis because I liked it so much. The atmosphere is great. You can see some of the brewing process such as tanks from the restaurant and there's even a glass pane on the floor in one section where you can look down and see part of the brewery. There is a restaurant section inside, an outdoor patio seating area, and a bar section where there is a really ornate bar.
The service was excellent on all three of my visits and our bartender Art provided great service and put in extra effort to take our picture outside by the waterfall.
The food was delicious and the menu was extensive. I recommend the grilled polenta. For dessert, check out the chocolate stout brownie!
The beer selection was excellent. I tried the Maple Stout which was brewed with pure Vermont maple syrup and this beer was incredible. My friend and I also tried the spicy blonde beer which also was very good. Other beers we tried that were good include the Bavarian Weizen, Oh Honey, Irish Stout, and the Light Squared.
I can't say enough good things about Square One Brewery. I'm glad I got to visit there three times and hope to go again someday!

The atmosphere of this place is great. Lafayette Square, historic building, great patio.
Beer is okay to good, nothing I have had has been spectacular. Carry out growlers are expensive, if you want a higher ABV beer.
The pulled pork I had there was definitely microwaved. Just really disappointing. It tasted okay, but a reheated mess.
Their selection is nice, a ton of decent beers to taste.
The smell? I am not sure what it is, but the smell there is weird. It kills my experience every time.
Overall, it is a must stop in St. Louis. Don't expect great things, but expect good things. If nothing else, the patio is good.

I went to Sauare One Brewery on a Sunday evening about 7:45pm. We sat outside in the patio area, and it was absolutely fantastic. There was a fountain, an outside bar, and a very comfortable, spacious seating arrangement that was nestled in their corner of the city. Very urban setting.
The quality of their beer is excellent and the consistency of the quality of their beer is outstanding. The evening that I went they had one of their new beers on cask. Pretty rare for an eatery. I didn't eat, but their food looked delicious. Their menu was select, but anyone who knows anything about eateries know that quantity less than usually amounts to quality. I had five different types of beer and the waiter knew the beer fairly well and was able to give me recommendations when creating a lineup for my sampler. My lineup had four beers in 5 oz. glassware and were identified accordingly.
The service was a bit slow this night. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt that this was an exceptional night, because I hear nothing but great things about this place. My biggest complaint was that my first beer took me approximately 20 minutes before I received it, and whenever I received it, it had lost some of its coolness. The beer kicked ass, so it made up for it. :-)
Will be heading back here soon. If you are in Saint Louis, you must stop here. If you live in Saint Louis, you should support this place. They are doing some very creative things.

Was a tourist in my own town recently and finally checked out Square One. Man, I've been missing out.
This is a great place with a wonderful atmosphere, in the revitalized Lafayette Square neighborhood in St Louis. We ate inside because of a threat of storms, but they have an awesome patio. Next time I go, I will go on a nice day to be able to sit outside. Inside, you can view the brewing equipment, still for the spirits, and also have a glass window in the floor to see the brewing operations downstairs.
We went for lunch and got great service. Our server was very knowledgable about the menu and the beer choices, and was friendly and prompt as well. We had our 2 year old and 1 month old, along with my 14 year old son with us. The owner / manager brought my 2 year old a plate of celery / carrots with peanut butter which was cool. Server brought hot water to warm up our baby's bottle. Really nice people.
I ordered the sampler which gets you 4 6 ounce beers for $6. I tried the Double Red, Maple Stout (my favorite), IPA and Spicy Blonde. They were all very good and I'd have any of them again. My wife tried the Oh Honey! and really enjoyed that too.
Food was good - nothing spectacular. We had a nice appetizer with some pretzels and delicious cheese sauce / mustard. My wife got the reuben and I got a burger. My son got fish 'n chips. We all enjoyed our food. Nicely diverse menu with something to please everyone.
Not only is this a brewery, but it's also a distillery. They make spirits on site as well. I didn't partake of any, but heard they are very good.
All in all - you won't be disappointed if you check out Square One. Whether you are just going for beers, drinks, sample the spirits, or have lunch / dinner - you'll really enjoy it.
