Solid hole in the wall bar. Been there many times while working here uptown. Fish tacos kick ass. Actually most all of the food I've tried here has been well above average. Beer selection is so-so. I had a $3 anything on draft welcoming me this Tuesday which was nice.

I was there in July on a Thurday evening. Great outside area with a live bluegrass band. The beer selection was good: Dogfish Head, Bell's, Terrapin, etc...The food was incredible, I had shrimp and grits and the SW pepper sauce just blew me away. There seemed to be wide variety of food on the menu from seafood to southern dishes that all had a little twist to them. People were friendly and the service was pretty prompt for as crowded as it was. If your into meeting young professionals or some hot college women I would say you should try your luck there. I will be back when I'm in Charlotte.

This was a rather intresting stop to say the least. I wont go into all the details regarding the inside as others have done a fine job of that already, but it is not really all that bad. The food is actually somewhat enjoyable and the service was prettyfair as well. The beer selection is better then most places in SC so I had to give that good marks. Overall this place is really not that bad, there are better, sure, but it is really not bad and still makers for an enjoyable night out. I would stop in here again.

Even after reading the less than desirable reviews on BeerFly, I gave it a try tonight for dinner with low expectations. On a Sunday night with a band playing outside, I was pleasantly surprised. We stayed outside for the food and music and really enjoyed ourselves. The other reviews were spot on regarding the atmosphere inside so I won't go into detail. The service was fine and the food was actually really good (the five of us there all enjoyed ours). Lots on the menu and pretty cheap. Above average selection but we're starting to get snobby here in NC.
In short, go on a nice day and enjoy the outdoors.

The Philospher's Stone Tavern is a decent spot just east of downtown Charlotte on 7th St. It's a locals sort of hangout as it seems most of the patrons are people who live in the neighborhood which surrounds the place. Dimly lit and a little bit dingy, but that shouldn't discourage you. The food here wasn't all that great. Typical selections you'd find at other bars, just didn't taste all that great. I woudn't come back for the food. Beer menu is better than most of your run of the mill bars, but nothing spectacular either. I thoroughly enjoyed the large goblets of St. Bernardus Witbier for $4.50. There were other goodies to be found as well. Shouldn't be your first stop if you're looking for a large beer selection but if you're searching for somewhere not too upbeat in this area that has more of a locals bar feel than this is your stop.

Located in a cool little neighborhood just outside of the "downtown" area dotted w/ lots of quint little restaurants and cozy pubs. I didn't pay too much attention to the bar area as we walked in and were seated in a room connected to another area that looked like it could be opened up for the summer.
Although we didn't eat, the menu was large and filled with interesting choices with adventurous names. Prices looked very reasonable and I believe that there are daily specials offered. Beer choices are certainly better that average. Six taps w/ Yuengling Lager being the lowest beer offered. Other taps were St. Bernardus Witte, Brooklyn Brown Ale, Highland Gaelic Ale, Mad River Jamaica Red Ale, and I think Guiness and something else. Some of the better bottles offered were Chimay Blue, Three Philosophers, Rogue Dead Guy 22, and about 20 others.
I ordered the St Bernardus Witte, which was served filled to the top of the big, 16+ oz St. Bernardus goblet for only $4.50. It was exceptionalIy good. love it when beer is served in the respective vessel. My fiancee ordered a 22 oz Dead Guy for $7, which is a good price at a bar. All other drafts were $3.50 a pint. Overall a decent place to visit, close to downtown and very reasonably priced. I will go back again.
