Selection is good, but service is horrid.

Personally I like having a repore with my liquor store.
I compare this to going to a big box store vs your local home store.

Expect to be treated the same. Or just get in get what your want and get out.

Pretty good selection, employees are not very knowledgeable about beer in general or their inventory. I asked if I could break a pack into singles and they didn't know what I meant. Everything required a manager. Otherwise though, the selection was good but check dates; and has a decent selection of local area beers.

The vibe is pretty plain, as it is essentially a high and open ceiling, no frills warehouse with a huge selection of alcohol. The wine racks look nice and are set up with good symmetry. The beer selection fills up the entire back wall and the closest aisles. Quality of selection is fair to strong, with an aisle dedicated solely to imports, and another open section just for seasonals and bombers. Otherwise, the aisles contain everything from one brewer to the next in a reasonable order. Service is good and bad, depending on how you approach it. For one, I was stuck listening to someone talk different beers for a solid 20 minutes before I was able to make my selections and leave. On the other hand, it was quite nice having a large and friendly staff readily available to answer questions, talk beer, ingredients, flavor profiles, and pairings with. The service keeps it from being a quick stop shop, but could help you leave with a much better planned selection of beer. Considering the total selection and how much space it spans, its nice having a dedicated beer service person to guide you to the brewery or beer you are seeking. Selection was great. Most everything within Missouri's distribution system was here, perhaps with the exception of the more rare and hard to find beers in the market. They even sell Imperial Stouts and RIS's by the case if you are so inclined (they had cased of Ivan the Terrible, and Prairie's Bomb and Birthday Bomb). There were even a few beers that were only labeled for distribution in Kansas, a stone's throw away. Three coolers in the back are dedicated to a mix-six selection, and are ordered and labeled within their different beer styles. Unfortunately, the mix-six selection was lacking, and although kept chilled, did not have much of it within date.

Overall, a huge cavernous liquor store with a good beer selection.

The selection was pretty good, and I got what I was looking for - single 12oz beers that were out of my distribution. They did not have many limited release beers other than Boulevard, which is local. Plenty to choose from, but don't go in with too high expectations. I would say this is a mid-sized store, 12oz singles are kept cold, most beer is sold in 4 or 6 packs. Great displays for the local breweries. Probably a good place to stop if you are in the southeast KC area.

A massive size liquor store in south KC. Back portion is dedicated to beer. Had a decent selection of Founders, Boulevard, Firestone Walker, Bells, and Stone. Didn't have too many of the select/limited beers there. My other complaint was that a number of the beers i was interested in purchasing had an older bottled on date than some of the other smaller liquor stores around town.

Overall, lots of quantity with average quality.

Was surprised that this seemed so far south from the center of the city. Oh well, stopped on a Saturday night and selection was broad and good as expected. It had a nice singles area, although as in many places I wish I could have a chance at getting singles of everything. The beers were both refrigerated in the back and kept out to the south end of the store. Glassware was also available. This seems to be the place to stop in KC for a beer haul. $171 I spent despite not really planning to spend much more than $50 coming in.

Quality I'm putting as average. The bottle of Trappist Achel Bruin 8 was a skunked/otherwise bad bottle.

Service was nice and made sure to ask if we needed assistance. Always a plus. Of course, like almost always, we did not take up that offer, so we don't know how knowledgeable they are.

Amazing selection including a build your own 6/12/24 pack fridge with ~100 beers, several aisles of 6-sixers, and at least 4 rows (2 aisles) of bombers and singles of the quality stuff.

Guesstimating, I'd say they have somewhere between 400-500 beers. Hard to tell really.

Worth checking out if you're in the area.

This store is a little bit of a drive for me but not as far as the one on the Missouri side which is HUGE. This will certainly do for me though. The staff are friendly & they are more than willing to ask you if there is something that they can help you find. They have a "beer" guy & a "wine" guy to help you out w/ any suggestions or product detail. Usually more help than not & I've never had a bad experience going there. Reasonably priced & always get lots of the Boulevard Limited Release Smokestack series! Huge plus in my book. Lots of selection & I even found a few gems that I'll be purchasing soon. Overall, pretty darn good. Especially for Kansas! Prosit.

If i lived closer to this place i would only and i mean "only" go to this place. They have by far the largest selection i have seen in the kansas city area. I know some people are wine lovers but this place respects beer. Once you go the back third of the store you will know what i mean. The whole end of the store is dedicated to the beer and the people who love it. Almost anything you could want cold and ready; as well and three coolers+ of make your own-6. And if you don't find what you need in the coolers they have 4+ aisles of specialty single bottles and imports from other countries. Plus another reason to go the extra mile is that in Missouri they sell FOUNDER'S!!

I have been to KC twice and each time this is my favorite place to visit. It is by far the best beer store I have every visited: If Wal-Mart were simply an alcoholics supermarket, this would be the place!

Each time I go out of town I make a list of things I hope to find when there. The majority of things on my list are here, along with items that I had overlooked and was ecstatic to find.

While there, I am usually asked if I need any help several times and the staff is somewhat knowledgable of beer and beer styles.

I have and will continue to recommend this to anyone and everyone who looks to find a beer store that exceeds every expectation.

Highly recommended!

My "go to" place for beer in KC. Lukas (135th & State Line) by far has the largest selection of beer in the metro. They have a large selection of unique imports as well as most good domestic micros available to them. They have Bell's :) but no Dogfish Head. :(

I've had quite a few conversations with the guy that runs the beer section and he is very helpful. Best luck going in during the day on weekdays to catch him. I don't think he is around on the weekends.

Prices are reasonable but a little higher than some other stores.

I feel like a kid in a candy store every time I go, which is probably too often. :)

Lukas is certainly one of the de-facto beer stores in the Kansas City area. They also are one of the biggest liquor stores that I have been in. The selection of beer was quite broad but not in they lacked anything truly exotic. I picked up a some Founder's Double Trouble and Centennial IPA as well as Lagunitas' WTF. They had about a 50-50 mix of micro to import ratio if macros are excluded.

Despite the large quantity of micros and imports I really don't think that Lukas' is a "beer" store since beer is not a huge part of their product mix. Once you walk in the store it is laid out pretty much like any other liquor store. Wines and liquor are easily accessible and beer is in the back of the store.

Personal service is not really emphasized at Lukas' either. This is a "Wal-Mart" of liquor stores. If you need assistance it seemed as if you would need to go all the way up to the front and ask a cashier, and I don't know if they have any specialized beer knowledge.

Overall I was able to get in and out with relative ease. I also found beers that suited my tastes for a reasonable price.

I was heading back to Oklahoma after visiting the Boulevard Brewery. It was defiantly worth the stop. It was nice to find beers that are not available to us in Oklahoma. The staff was very polite. I spent probably an hour wondering up and down the aisles finding all kinds of treasures that I have only read about in magazines. Many deals were offered on seasonal and popular beers but I spent most of my money on the odd singles and bomber bottles. The other great thing was to create your own six pack. It gave me an opportunity to try several more common beers that I haven't had but didn't want to spend the money on a whole six pack in case I didn't like them. I will go out of my way to stop again if I'm ever in the area.

Took a 35 minute drive south from the near southside of KC (plaza area) to check out the highest rated bottle shop as rated by BA.

I happen to live by the #2 grossing liquor store in the nation (Party Source in Northern KY/Cincinnati) and Lukas is very similar when it comes to beer and wine (not as much with liquor). This place has a huge selection of wine and what I imagine is the most comprehensive selection of beer in the area.

Of note would be ~12 bottles of Black Albert for $9 each (maybe not as hard to get as a year or two ago). Also was tempted by some of the special Odell's releases. I don't know if you could break up bottles to make your own sixer. They did have singles available in the chilled section - nothing exceptional though. I also felt the Belgian selection, while big, could have been more impressive but it's hard telling what they have access to.

It was ~100 degrees during my trip with heat index at 110 so I was limited with what I wanted to buy and keep in my car during meetings. I went with a Hanssens Oude Gueuze for $8 which I drank in my hotel that night.

The best liquor stores I have found in Kansas and Missouri. One is off of 119th and Blue Valley Pkwy, and the other is off 135th and Stateline (missouri side). Each has a slightly different selection than the other, but both have a huge selection of great craft beers, including imports. They have the standards (Big 3, Guinness, Heiny, etc) but then they have a ton of other great beers that can't be found elsewhere. Above-average cooler selection, and a well above average bomber/24oz/etc section. I spend 30+ minutes just looking at stuff every time I go there. Also, the liquor and wine selections are exceptional as well.

This place is f'ing HUUUGGGEEE. Wow. I mean gigantic. Lots and lots of craft beer toward the back. Shelves of imported stuff, I found some Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel much to my surprise. By far the best bottle shop I've ever seen in Kansas City. The place I'm imagining is making its real money on liquor and wine based on the clientele and the lack of beer knowledge from the staff, but the person doing the buying has to know what's up. Hard to get to if you are in town since it is pretty far out in the burbs, but man what a huge and wonderful selection at this store.

Visited again today, noticed some significant changes here. The beer aisles were all shortened and moved to the rear of the place, opposite the coolers. Sunday it was a ghost town, think I even saw a tumbleweed blow past. There were maybe 3 employees (no other customers) in the place, no one to answer beer questions, or in the general beer area. Selection seemed slightly scaled back due to the economic crunch, but still large. Date codes seemed to be a month within code, not the freshest but still good. I was looking for US micros and not disappointed, and even found a couple lambics from Hanssens and Oud Beersel. Singles in the cooler were grouped by style, which was good to see. This place is cavernous, almost too big, but beer takes up a mere 1/4, if that. Open daily at 9am, 11am on Sunday.

Phil is the beer guy here, and my hat goes off to him. I was able to secure/buy a rare bottle over the phone and pick it up when I was in town for the holidays. It was right there waiting when I got there, no hassle. The blog is very detailed and keeps track of new arrivals and upcoming tasting events.

The store itself is massive, it rivals Sam's in Chicago. By sheer beer volume, Lukas has it beat. The beer aisles go on forever, and I could have easily spent another hour there browsing. The Boulevard smokestack 750 releases were here, which I had to try. Many other full lines of regional micros, such as Flying Monkey and Schlafly.

Great prices on the Belgian imports, noted a few things I couldn't get back home like Le Coq RIS and Oudbeitje Lambic from Hanssens ($4=awesome). Caracole 4-packs of every variety, located on the opposite side of the micro & import singles aisle, toward the back corner. Sort of confusing to split up the Belgians into 2 separate areas based on their packaging. Mix-a-six was right up front for $7.99. Anchor OSA '07 was included, which was a plus. Tried several new regional micros for cheap.

There were helpful staff members on the floor, a guy from the wine dept. directed me to the small selection of mead, which included Chaucers, an African, and a Nordic variety. An in house wine bar and tasting room was there, but looked closed. Hopefully this area is utilized for the beer events as well.

Overall an awesome store. Check it out if you are in the vicinity of KC, it's worth a major detour.

This place was a bit of a drive from downtown, KC (about 15 minutes) and I had my second thoughts as I was going down the highway, when I could have been spending more times at Grinders, but as I rolled up to this place, I had a serious Oh My God moment!! This place is huge, as in Target store huge...TONS of booze, wine and praise the lord BEER...suffice to say that if you can get it in the area, this place will have it..all the locals, regionals, impressive imports, warm, cold, cases, they even had nice Smokestack series glasses (no bargain at over $8, but I needed a nice souvenir from of my trip). Helpful and friendly staff on the floor and at the registers is always a plus. Beer Destination for sure, if in the general area this is a spot well worth driving a few extra miles for.

Once again, best selection in the city, but it's a 30 minute drive for me. Most of the staff are fairly helpful and friendly, but not as knowledgable as I would like to see in a place with this kind of selection.

As far as price goes, expect to pay about 10-20% more for your beer here, too, than you would at other stores. They've been missing the boat on occassion lately for beer releases, too.

Still, widest selection in town and you can find some real gems, if you're willing to make the LONG drive.

Before I start getting all negative, let me first say that Lukas easily has the biggest beer selection in Kansas City. There's no denying that, and there's nothing else that even comes close.

But if I could subtract from its score for being a complete pain in the butt to reach, I would. It's *really* far out. It's located relatively close to the airport terminal-like intersection of 135th and State Line. That's about 120 blocks from Downtown. No buses go there, and the highwaylike streets, frontage roads, and gargantuan parking lots don't exactly lend themselves to safety on a bicycle. you simply have to drive to get there. For KC, 120 blocks is a long way to drive for beer, even on an expressway.

But, if I lived close enough for the trip to be short, Lukas would unequivocally be my beer store. The selection is outstanding, and the staff are always eager to help you out, or make recommendations of their own.

Have made several trips to this Lukas over the last several months and overall would say that this is a pretty good place. The selection is the best in town in my opinion. The store is always well kept and clean and what you're looking for is always easy to navigate to.

The only knock I would have is that every time I have asked specific questions about a beer no one can answer and they brush it off with "I am a wine person". Now don't get me wrong, most the people here are rather friendly it would just be nice to have someone with a little tribal knowledge to pass along what's new, what's going to be showing up etc..

I am a Kansas City expat who moved 5 years ago. Boulevard is not distributed in Chicago, so I stock up every time I visit. When I live in KC the best "Beer" liquor store was Royal on 103rd and Stateline or Gomer's on 39th. None of these store could top the selection of Chicago's several warehouse style beer/wine emporiums. Lukas Liquor is in a class of it's own and I would make the trek out to 135th just to shop this location.

They have an extensive and up to date "u.s. micro and craft" section, followed by a European section and ending with a Belgian style area. What really did it for me was most of the shelf selection was available cold so you could enjoy it as soon as you get home. In addition they had 4 doors of individual bottles that you could mix and match to "Sample". This was great way for me to sample some of the new breweries out of St. Louis without breaking the bank on several 6 packs.

The associates were knowledgable and engaging. They spoke with me about my selection and made recommendations based on style not personal taste. The store was clean in appearance and smell (this could be due to the new construction in this part of town). The bottles were not dusty, a big pet peeve of mine.

Price wise I did not see anything out of scale with normal pricing. I spent about 200$ on Boulevard, Bell's and a few Schlafly beers. Filled up my trunk nicely.

I will be coming back to this location every time I visit the area. KC beer lover's are lucky to have such a great resource. Hopefully they can open a down town / mid town location so the other's store will step it up..
