The times I've been here they've usually had a good jazz trio playing in the background. Not too loud--allows for conversation yet offering some good music--over adds to a pleasant ambiance. Lots of windows also gives it a good vibe. Granted not the dark, dim-lit pub feeling, but still great in its own respect. They have a huge selection of good beers on tap and a fair amount in bottle as well. I had some food--a burger, I think--which was good but don't remember too much about their food. Usually when I've been there its been pretty busy but haven't had trouble getting a table. It's a decent size so shouldn't be the type of place that runs out of room easily.

Don’t you love it when a place has the highest rating in the area, and you go there and it actually lives up to it? We went here for brunch. It was great. There were two guys playing live music. The beer list was really amazing. The service was nice and knowledgeable but not overbearing. If you like beer and are in the Minneapolis/St Paul area, this is a MUST visit.

plenty of parking in a nice street setting building is cool looking from the outside and kind of cool on the inside hugh selection of brews both on tap and in the bottle lots of limited bottles and taps , the service was just average as the waiter was a bit off putting like it was our pleasure just to be here , food was good and served well but way to pricey so Happy Gnome has great brews but lousy uncaring service with inflated prices on beer and food

I went here for dinner one Wednesday night this summer. Food was okay, but the beer selection was drool worthy, just phenomenal, I loved how they organized the beer list. I could have stayed there all night if I didn't have to work the next morning...Atmosphere was very nice and cozy.
One qualm though: I HAD A GIANTASS MILLIPEDE CRAWL ON THE TABLE WHILE WE WERE EATING. That pretty much ended my dinner - but did not end my drinking. I would still go back, but the memory remains.

Visited on a Wednesday for a late lunch. No one in the restaurant. The bar booths were about half full.
Great food, better beer with some rarities and vintages on the bottle menu. I will definitely be back.
V – Feels like a beer place. Could be too dark at night. Friendly. Loud at times in the bar.
Q – Correct glasses for both my stout and flanders red.
S – Bartender was very attentive but not overbearing. Knowledgeable about beer.
S – 40+ taps and another 40+ bottles. Great selection. I had the Fulton War & Peace and the Rodenbach Grand Cru – Yum!
F – I had the meatloaf sandwich. Fantastic! Fries were excellent as well.

Ah, the Happy Gnome is my second favorite beer bar in North America (see Bar Volo in Toronto), and what a terrific selection of beer -- and awesome food, stay for dinner if you can get a table -- and a gem in St Paul's Cathedral Hill. When in town, you must go.
