The original venue from the group that brought us the Bavarian Bier Cafes. Well located in The Rocks, just up the hill from the Orient Hotel.
A diverse mix of eating & dining options, from the modern covered outside seating to the long table dining area inside and bar area further in. The bar is long, wooden and with plenty of steins hanging above the servers heads. Stone walls, old tiled floor all add to the feel of the place. Gets busy at the usual peak times with a mix of city workers and tourists, especially given the close proximity to Circular Quay.
All quite well done, mostly matching glassware with 500ml and 1 litre steins and 300ml glasses. Staff are all dressed in German style attire, well as far as i can tell given i don't really know the difference between a dirndl and lederhosen, but the leather aprons also add to the attemps to re-create a German bier-hall in Sydney.
Plenty of tap fonts, with the 9 tap beers being repeated at a few service points. Selection is pretty basic, lager (Lowenbrau Original, Spaten Munchen, Stiegl Goldbrau, Hofbrau Original), Pilsner (Lowenbrau Premium Pils), dark lager (Lowenbrau Dark), dark hefe (Franziskaner Hefe Weissbier Dunkel), hefe (Franziskaner Hefeweissbier Hell) and a midstrength lager (Thurn and Taxis Munich Gold). Bottle selection includes a Kristallweizen (Franziskaner) and alcohol free beers from Paulaner and Lowenbrau, but the 6 options don't really compliment what's on tap all that well.
Service was with a smile, pleasant and efficient and way quicker than their Bavarian Bier Cafe siblings.
Cost is a bit pricey. Tap beers with the exception of Thurn and Taxis go for $8.10 for 300ml, $12.10 for 500ml and $22.60 for the litre. So by no means cheap, but as usual, this is Sydney, this is imported tap beer and this is The Rocks.
Nice place to go for a beer. The selection is a bit dull at the moment (lager or wheat beer, light or dark), but hopefully it gets back to times past when Maibocks, Doppelbocks and Marzens are on the tap fonts. I didn't have food on this occasion, but this and the Bavarian Bier Cafe's are renowned for their giant Pork Knuckles and huge Schnitzels which are a challenge in themselves.

Having never visited Germany, it's hard to rate the overall effectiveness of this place, but that aside it's hard for me not to be impressed.
My first visit inside, I was struck by the claustrophobic, wine-cellar quality of the sandstone complex that looked well, like a medieval drinking hall. That being said though, the closed-off quality leads to a very good acoustic effect and when the oom-pah band is playing, the ambience is very convivial, and perfect for having a drunken sing-along while waving your litre-steins in the air.
The service is excellent, with a number of comely wenches in leiderhosen wandering around being generally helpful and friendly. I've been very impressed with the general humour and temperament of the staff who always seem to be having as good a time as the patrons. I was also impressed upon my last visit that my waiter managed to understand my horrific pronunciation of "Gemischte Wurstplatte" in spite of the oom-pah band being in full voice at the time.
Beer-wise it's a great selection, with an impressive range of Lowenbrau and Franziskaner brews, too many to get through in one visit unless you're drinking them by the 300mL glass. I've even had the (mis)fortune to try their unusual alcohol-free beer which is an experience, to say the least. But overall, you're spoiled for choice here as far as beers go.
The food is also very nice, although if truth be told I've only actually tried one dish, the afore-mentioned Gemischte Wurstplatte (mixed sausage platter), but it's so good I can't bring myself to switch. Four wurst per plate with a healthy helping of mash and a really delicious sauerkraut. From generous friends I've had a sampling of the schnitzel and a pork knuckle as well, and the helpings are very generous, they should be able to sustain you for a night of solid drinking and merriment.
Price is certainly reasonable for the amount you can eat and drink. Overall, an excellent night out for the beer lover.

Munich in Sydney, well almost!
I was impressed, late afternoon and midweek, it was kicking in the main eating area and outside. We made our way through and down into the long bar area at the back. A bit like a cellar bar, you could have been in Bavaria, if it hadn't been so hot. Piped German drinking music added to the illusion, it must have been to early for the live band!
The beer was fine, don't know if it is imported or brewed down under?
Worth the effort, although it is a bit pricey, even for that area of Sydney (The Rocks).

With an oom-pa-pa band playing in the background, and a liter of German Pilsner in your hand, what more do you need? Good food? ok, I didn't really find any here. The krauts and sausages lacked the kick that I desired and left my taste buds wanting for more. But the place is still good, and fun! Inside it's dimly-lit with low ceilings and lots of dark wood...perfect escape from the so-called sophisticated bars abd restaurants in the Sydney CBD, and the atmosphere is so much 'the Rocks.'

Known for celebrating october fest every year, as you enter this beautiful pub you are greeted on friday and saturdays by yodeling, a brass band, and costumed waitresses as they ferry foaming beer steins about the atmospheric, cellarlike space.
The range of german and Bavarian food is fantastic as well as breakfeast all day and lunch they supply food alternatives for vegatarians also.
Even if you don't want to wait, the variety of beer is mouthwatering: dark and pale wheat beers, Paulanger, Lowenbrau etc. A total of 12 gems in bottle and on tap.
If you ever in the rocks this is one of the places to check out for lovers of fun and beer alike.
