Atmosphere: The atmosphere during the week/dinner time is usually a casual to upscale casual bunch. The place can get crowded at times, during dinner and especially crowded at night. The late night crew is pretty different than the dinner crowd, with the late night crew being more hipster-esque/young post college kids. Overall, it's not a bad place to eat or drink.
Service: The service at Avalon is usual pretty casual. I've had some waitresses that are pretty slow so I wouldnt recommend this place if you are looking for a quick meal. But overall most of the waitress are very attentive and very personable.
Selection: The beer selection is fairly extensive for being such a small place. The beer menu is broken down by color/beer body type. Unfortunately, they dont have anything on tap, which is a bit of a disappointment. However, there are some good things on the menu that should leave you satisfied.
Food: The food at Avalon is delicious. Everything I've eaten there has been wonderful. The portion sizes are small, and can be expensive. But trust me, whatever you order, you'll really like.
Value: I listed the value at $$$ only because the price for food can be expensive. The beers, on the other hand, are on par with most other local bars.
Overall: Overall I'd highly recommend Avalon to any beer drinker that wants a really high quality meal with a decent selection of bottled beer. The bar scene is also a cool late night drinking spot, but dont be expecting beer connoisseurs then. I'd recommend this as a date place for beer drinkers that want a decent brew with a high quality meal.

The atmosphere at Avalon has somewhat of a retro feel, and maybe even a bit stuffy, even on a Friday night. Still, I much prefer this to a college hangout-style place, so it felt inviting for the most part. Looking at the beer list, the prices were reasonable, albeit different from the listing on the website. The selection was pretty much all bottles, but a good selection at that. Great medium and dark beer selection, with more common imports interspersed. The service, however, was a real downer, perhaps because there was no room at the bar and we wanted to sit in the non-smoking section. Still, this might be due to our server having a bad night, but I wouldn't be so quick to attribute it to just that. Had some fries there, but nothing to warrant a review of the food. All in all, this is a nice little place, somewhat tucked away, to get away from the bustle of other, less beer-inclined venues. Seems like it would be a great place for a quiet, romantic evening date than a night out on the town.

Nice place in the heart of the fan, with a selection of about 20 beers, most of which are pretty good. Nice atmosphere, but can be a bit loud at night. The service is slow, but curteous, and the prices are just a little high. The food is actually amazing here, although it is also a bit pricey (before the retarded 10% richmond meal tax that is....)
I really enjoy going here, especailly since it is about 100 feet from my front door. While there are better beer bars in the area, this one does have a nice selection, and a nice crowd. I tend to end my nights out here, rather than start here.

One of the many restaurants on Main St. in the heart of Richmond, and certainly I think one of the best.
It's a place where you shouldn't necessarily go in jeans, but you can, and you're not looked down upon. But with the upscale atmosphere at least, it's cool to sometimes where something nice. It's pretty dark with decorative lighting, somewhat smoky, especially if you're the only non-smoker in a group of four like I was.
They don't have any taps, oddly enough, but some selections from the beer menu that I can remember are Ommegang, Old Rasputin, and Red Nectar. They may not have the most insane selection, but they also don't have much macro stuff on the meny either.
And the food's pretty incredible, too. A friend got the Filet Mignon, I got the duck, we got mussels for an appetizer, they give you good bread. The menu changes fairly frequently, and there's not a crazy amount to choose from, yet I found out that everything looked so damn good it was hard to choose. The entrees are in the $15-20 range, but it's certainly well worth it.
A classy place that's fairly casual, with good beer, great food, and a pretty cool atmosphere. Definitely check it out if you're in the area.
