Swan's "Oatmeal Stout" @ 5.4% served somewhat cold from a 650 ml bottle
A-pours almost black with a very small coffee & cream colored head that quickly dissapates leaving no lacing
S-a variety of roasted malts and oats , hint of ground coffee beans
T-toasted smoky malts , roasted oats , some bitter chocolate
MF-a bit thin , low to almost no carbonation
Ov-not Swan's best , lacks something , look for it on sale

cheers LampertLand

A: Pours a deep black brown with just fizz and absolutely no head, which was somewhat disappointing.

S: Raisins, molasses, coco, coffee toasted malts

T: Deep toasted malt with a hint of bitter hops like bitter sweet chocolate. Smooth finish with a mild aftertaste

M: Not nearly the thick oily brew expected based on appearance.
The drink is somewhat thin and lacking so much in carbonation it's as though you might be drinking flat pop.

O: The smell and taste stand up to the Swan's standard, unfortunately this brew falls behind on mouth feel and appearance. Too bad, because it has so much going for it on smell and taste.

Served in 20 oz pint glass in-house.

A: Opaque, black-brown witha tan-white heat, neat lacing and a moderate rentention. Like a good stout should.

S: Lots of oats, walnuts, creamy and almost a little salty. Too faint though.

T: Oatmeal, peat, some smoky hints, a little more walnut, a little malt. Subtle, but nice.

M: Very smooth and creamy, with a low carb. A little watery though, and a bit short on the tongue.

O: A very good beer, with a really nice appearence and taste. Could be a bit stronger thoguh, with a little stronger mouthfeel, maybe higher ABV or carb?

A: 1/4" light brown head over black liquid.

S: Toasted grains predominantly with chocolate and coffee.

T: Heavily toasted grains to the point of being almost smoky, toasted male, with an aftertaste reminiscent of a black coffee with sugar in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

M: Thin, especially for an oatmeal stout with a low-to-medium level of carbonation. A little on the lackluster side in terms of overall mouthfeel.

O: I love the style, but I don't think this is the best beer in Swans' lineup to be honest.

Verbatim from notes 16JUL11

SOS: Rose mahogany stout with brilliant clarity. No head and no lace. Should be a little darker. Smells of malts, molasses, dark brown sugar, raisins. Taste is of roasted, sweet and buttered - which actually suits this well. A little too sweet IMO. Thin for the style with low carb, needs more body to feel right. Although this tastes okay and may be quite sessionable, it falls from the best or above avg oatmeal stouts. Too sweet, too thin.

Appearance. Near black with a two finger, pillowy light tan head. Only a little chunky lacing.

Smell. Heavier grain smell with roasty malt. Some molasses and dark coffee.

Taste. Roasted grains, toasty malt, a little burnt sugar and coffee. Slightly acidic.

Mouthfeel. Lighter medium body with medium strong, prickly carbonation.

Overall. Solid oatmeal stout. Not as refined as some but an easy drinker that hits the spot.

Swans Oatmeal Stout pours deep colorless black with a nice light brown head. The aroma is rich caramel and chocolatey roasted malt. The flavor is all malt, sweet toffee caramel, chocolate and slightly astringent burnt coffee flavor. The beer finishes on the dry side, with a delicious creamy mouthfeel. I had this one on draft at the brewpub, and liked it even more, but this is a solid, drinkable, flavorful oatmeal stout.

Best Before: 1/2011.

Pours a dark brown, some light getting through. Minimal head that doesn't stick around beyond 30 seconds. No lacing.

Smells like lots of oats/mash, bit of the stout maltiness. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Taste is light and pretty straightforward. At the back there is a sly sweetness that seems a little out of place, maybe a little cloying. Malt, oats, coffee - all light. Thin body, not much carbonation leaves this one feeling like it is missing a few things. Didn't expand either as it warmed up; that's all there is.

You COULD drink a few of these, if you like the thin stout it is, but I think one is enough for me.

Appearance: Not sure if it's because the waitress left the pint on the bar for 15 minutes before delivery, but there was no head on the pour. Or at least, it dissipated quickly and didn't linger. Jet black though, it looked thick and smoky.

Smell: Well it smelled like a stout, with a slight bit of smoky maltiness. Some chocolate and coffee, but VERY subdued.

Taste: Well the aroma was indicative of the taste. The flavours are there, just very underscored. Coffee, chocolate and plum. Quite aqueous.

Mouthfeel: Very thin. It went down like water. Very little taste-bud action.

Drinkability: Well anyone COULD drink a lot of this since it's pretty thin and light, but would anyone WANT to? Not me. One pint was enough....I look for a brew that leaves me satisfied after a pint, not wishing I ordered something else.
