Poured from a brown bottle into pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a very lightly hazed straw color with a billowy white head. The head fades in about 3 min to leave a nice level of lacing.

Smell – The aroma is bready and skunky in nature. With these stronger aromas is a lighter citrus hop smell.

Taste – The taste begins with a bready flavor mixed with a light citrus flavor of lemon. As the taste advances further the bready flavors grow stronger with the citrus growing weaker. While this occurs some skunky flavors begin working their way to the tongue which grows rather stronger and stronger. A bitter hop flavor of a citrus and herbal nature come to the tongue and mix with the rest to, in the end, leave a lightly bitter, bready, and skunked flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body for the beer is quite thin in terms of creaminess and chewiness with a carbonation level that is a little on the higher side.

Overall – Nothing really very good overall. For the style it was light and crisp, but the flavor profile was rather off putting with a rather offensive aftertaste.

A new offering from Penn? Hell yeah!

A - Pours a clear straw yellow color with a 1/2 inch of foamy white head. No complaints here.

S - Smell is of floral hops, sweet malts, yet I am not getting much bread or fruity yeasts.

T - Well it's very easy to drink but it kind of lacks more of the flavors of a full bodied Kolsch. I get the hops and sweet malts but were is the bready body or touch of lemon? Granted it was refreshing but I expected more.

M - Light to medium again a great summer beer.

Overall this seems to be just like their last years attempt at a summer beer "Summer Berry Weisse" It's light on flavor yet it was pretty good.

Penn Brewery : Cool River Kölsch

LOOK: Crystal clear straw yellow with a soapy white, well retaining head that leaves lace going down the glass.

SMELL: Bready, crackery character and a touch of grassy, herbal hop.

TASTE: Quite light flavor up front; bready malts and low hop, with Penn's distinctive twangy yeast strain. Clean lager flavor and a subtle bitterness. Leafy hops and a more or less even balance.

FEEL: Light bodied, medium carbonation, and somewhat crisp and refreshing.

OVERALL: A nice new product in a traditional German style. It is done pretty well here by Penn. A no brainer in the summer months, and would pair very nicely with grilled sausages and kraut simmered in the beer.

Serving type: on-tap
