Notes:
Authentic wheat beer, brewed in the Southern German tradition, won the Silver Medal in 1997 and the Gold Medal at the 2000 in Denver, Colorado. Penn Weizen is top-fermented, cask-conditioned, and very effervescent with a slight hint of tangy clove flavor.

An American hefe-weizen that stands up to Bavarian standards. Not as richly malty or complex as some of the classics, but better than a few of the not so well know Germans. Cloudy, yellow orange with copper highlights and a fluffy bright white head. The head diminishes within the first quarter of the glass but leaves a good collar and some nice lace. The aroma is fragrant, offering a grainy maltiness and the traditional banana and clove (well balanced toward the clove) as well as some vanilla and fruit. The mouthfeel is not as impressive as the upper-eschelon of Bavarian weizen, but certainly fully present in it's light to medium body and full carbonation. The flavor follows the aroma with an increased vanilla, some soft ripe plum, and a gentle touch of smokiness. Again, the balance is towards the clove, with a bitterness that keeps the beer from appearing sweet. The finish is dryish and spicy. Thirst quenching and extremely satisfying.

Presentation: 12 oz brown long-neck bottle with a blurb about the beer on the back ... freshness date notched on the back label.

Appearance: Hazy pale golden yellow with a striking white lace.

Smell: Clove spice twang with hints of banana and pear.

Taste: Creamy and smooth mouth feel with a medium body. Crisp malty texture ... big lively spicy clove bite that rides on top of the rich carbonation. Mildly hopped and a decent amount of residual sweetness in the middle. Bready wheat with drying grain and trace yeast in the flavour finish the brew off.

Notes: Perhaps a touch too sweet though other than that it tastes like a freshly imported German Wheat Beer. A well crafted brew with all of the trademark flavours from the Bavarian Wheat Yeast. Bottled conditioned ... this adds to its complexity and drinkability.

I'm not a wheat fan but this stuff is great on tap, huge haze, fresh smell and a rolling banana/ester flavor. No trace of a citrus/sour flavor to my tongue. A real refresher from Pittsburgh's North Side...
