Poured from growler into a pint glass.

Appearance: very dark brown with a ruby tinge; almost like a cross between a brown ale and a porter in hue. Two-finger tan head which leaves a nice lace.

Smell: chocolate and caramel aromas; again, it seems like a mix between a porter and a brown ale. Not bad.

Taste: there's some good chocolate flavor there but overall it seems a bit too astringent and roasty. In this respect, it leans toward a lot of English-style porters I've had; it's good but not what I usually like in an American porter.

Mouthfeel: medium-bodied with a nice level of carbonation.

Drinkability: pretty good, but the astringency in the flavor limits its capabilities as a session beer.

Serving type: growler

Ellersick brews their Double Chocolate Porter with chocolate malts and Ghirardelli chocolate. Ghirardelli makes some fine chocolate and this porter makes ample use of it, building the flavor to a robust climax that showers the palate with good stuff. The aroma never matches the flavor for chocolate intensity and the beer as a whole feels like a routine porter elevated by a fine adjunct.

Double Chocolate is oddly red for a porter - like polished mahogany. Head and lace make no appreciable appearance and the flavor can falter. Still, the beer has its moments and is certainly worth a try.

Serving type: on-tap
