When you first walk in it looks like any other sports bar with a Corona sign telling you how long until Cinco de Mayo down to the minute.
I first looked at the beer selections and was a little miffed that they had a good amount of micro brews from around the US and a few good imports mixed in with a lot of the usually seen imports in America.
I saw that they had Wahrsteiner Dunkel Weiss and asked if they had a hefeweizen glass, but they didn't even have a pint glass, only pint mugs, and I decided against trying their beer.
I ordered the salad and the food was pretty darn good to tell you the truth, the atmosphere is set up for a sports bar with seating for many people, not very intamate.

The hotel I stay at while working in Ames is attached to this restaurant.
Beer selection is very good compared to other restaurants in Ames. The draft beers seem to rotate every few months, and they have about 5-6 beer specials, and not Miller Lite or Bud.
I am a stout and porter guy, so there are usually a few stouts on tap that I can't get back east, and enjoy trying the local offerings (Millstream is a favorite).
The service is excellent, with the right amount of "need another?", etc. not over bearing or lacking.
The food is very rich, and seem to specialize in Italian type foods. The calzones and pizza's seem to be the highlights of the menu, but other dishes are good too.
The late happy hour is great, especially for folks like myself who work late, and like to have some food and a few good brews at the end of a long day.

Ames is creepy. Take Iowa city. Subtract all the good parts (the culture, the art community, the creative people). Now magnify the bad--stinky hippy, retarded fratboys, scensters, icky landscapes, poorly planned roads. Right there you got Ames.
This place is in a horrible location, connected to some hotel. On top of that, as soon as you walked in you were really reminded that you were in Ames. I know it's a chain, but this one just seemed off. Grimier than usual. Full up with 21-year-olds talking about how much money their dad makes and screaming "Dude! Fuck! Duuude! Fuuuck!" after their tenth Grolsch.
Waitress. Umm...god bless her and her little retarded heart. I don't think she could have pronounced half the items on the menu. She probably had to have someone else take her home every night, since otherwise she would get lost. She can't have been blamed for not being able to decently wait tables.
The beer selection, while wide, was horrendous and grossly overpriced. On tap you had mostly macros along with a handful of light-tasting Eurobrews, the bulk of which were made by inbev. There were a few local selections from Millstream and regional beers from Boulevard. But you know something they have those at like half the pizza places in this state. Just because you have a single keg of Millstream that doesn't mean you are a beer bar.
Crap. Avoid. I don't know if my tastes have greatly changed since the last time I visited an Old Chicago, or if the chain has just really gone downhill or if the Ames location is especially horrible or what. Probably a little of all three.

The location is awful; out in a parking lot, with nothing within walking distance. Went in for lunch, ready to be bored, and was very pleasantly surprised at the experience.
Had a "Chicago 7" calzone, which turned out to be tasty, if not exceptional, but enjoyable. Cheesecake dessert tasted like it came from a frozen box.
Was flabbergasted by the choice of brews. Yeah, lots of boring domestic crap, but plenty of other fun selections. Both the Rogue hazelnut and the Bell's porter were served far too cold, but that's easy enough to handle. And, on a very warm day, it's not such a bad thing.
Biggest complaint is the necessity of driving here from anywhere. Really, who wants to see a menu with dozens of wonderful beers, and then have to drive? Sigh. But I'd like to come back, all the same.

One OC=Every OC....My montra and I stand by it. That said...it is why I go to the OC in every town that I can....because I know what I am getting. When you are away from home, that is worth a ton.
This particular location is quite nice. Attached to a hotel....never seen that before. The building, once inside has a nice bar area, with dark wood, comfy high back stools, a large mirror over the bar...and "better" beer selection than what I can find at the OC's in omaha, IE a bells tap, rougue tap and Old Capital tap amongst the standard Midwest Crafts....no New Belgium though...hmmm?
The food is what the food is decent to good and predictable...this is the reason I come back...in town on business, I want to get something to eat, and I like knowing what is on the menu.
The selection as always is lack luster but the best variety in this small town.
Stop in as it is close to campus, Jack Trice, the Gatway Hotel and many other places to stay, as well as one mile (at the most) of of I35 if you are heading to or from the cities.

There's not much you can really say about Old Chicago that already hasn't been said about any of the other locations where this chain restaurant lays its capitalist head. The nice thing about this Old Chicago is that it is in a town with ridiculously nice people.
I ordered a Three Floyd's Robert the Bruce and the other person in my party from California decided on going back to his Mexican roots and ordering a Negra Modelo. Salud my brother, salud.
The menu was pretty standard beer, most of the macros, but they had a few locals and a couple offerings from Three Floyds which made me very happy. We can't get that beer out here, so it was very nice to see.
I ordered a veggie personal pizza and caesar salad combo with the cookie/ice cream kicker. The food was rather excellent deep dish. The service was phenomenal and the restaurant seemed on-point.
I would go back to this place because I know what to expect. They area a chain that sticks to the formula. Sometimes there's a little comfort in stability.
