I am a die-hard fan of the original, Uptown Cheff Geoff's on New Mexico Ave. However, my first encounter with the Downtown restaurant proved to be still pleasing. The Happy Hour is a great deal seeing as you can get the Bistro Burger and a Supermug (34oz beer on tap) for under $20 including tax and tip. Though the Blue Moon was pleasant, the supermug was overly frosted and altered the taste of the beer. I have heard concerns regarding the early hour at which the crowd dies down on Friday and Saturday nights. That problem, unfortunately, is one of DC night life, not necessarily a reflection of the Cheff Geoff's atmosphere.
The only other disappointments is the much smaller selection at the Downtown location (roughly 12 beers on tap) than the Uptown location (roughly 25 beers on tap). I recommend either location for the superb food and great atmosphere, but if it's the selection of beer you're looking for (and let's be honest, of course it is) the Uptown location is the place for you (and me).

I'm not sure if I would call Chef Geoff's a "beer bar" or not, but it is a decent place to hit for happy hour or early dinner if you're downtown.
Located convienently near Metro Center and many of the Smithsonian museums downtown, CG's has a very nice atmosphere and excellent food. There's a very large bar area right when you walk in. During post-work happy hour time, it can become very crowded and difficult to find a seat. The bar seating itself is fairly small. They have a number of very good happy hour food specials like cheap personal-sized pizzas and hamburgers. The food menu is of the American/continental variety and features many very good salad entrees, seafood, and steaks.
Beer-wise, they have about a dozen or so drafts, ranging from common things like Bass to some more adventerous offerings like Dogfish's 60-minute IPA and Rogue Dead Guy. Again, happy hour is the time to go here because they offer "Supermugs" (approx. 32 ozs) of all their draft beer for, I think, $7.95. Quite a deal for something like Dead Guy. They have a couple of dozen bottled beers ranging from imports like Chimay and Unibroue, and micros such as Sierra Nevada Bigfoot when in season.
Nice little place with good happy hour specials, very good food, and good location. Service can be a bit iffy, however, when they are really crowded.

Two friends of mine and I went to eat (and drink, of course) there when I was visiting Washington. I was quite impressed. I was surprised how early it slowed down, though, on a Friday.
It has a nice atmophere, with a large bar on one side and tables on the other. It was very clean.
The people who worked there were friendly, knowledgable and professional.
The beer selection was quite expansive, with a good variety of local and foreign beers. (I didn't even see the mega-macros, but then, I wasn't really looking out for them either.) I ordered a blue Chimay, which was served in a Chimay glass. On tap I almost ordered the Rogue, but, instead had the Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA. The taps, evidently, were well-cleaned. The bartender said that the owner is very careful and selective of beer and makes sure that everything is clean. That was obvious.
The food was delicious. The servings were not very large, but VERY tasty. I ordered the flat-iron steak and it was juicy and had a wonderful, deliciuos sauce.
Overall, I was quite impressed with the place, and look forward to going again on my next trip!
