I'd popped in at Jenifer Street Market before to pick up dinner, but I'd never even thought to do any serious beer shopping until a recent weekend trip to Madison.
I was planning large and expensive purchases at Riley's and Steve's, but Jenifer Street soaked up some of their sales by stocking five or six different kinds of Lake Louie and Central Waters, maybe eight Bells beers, Lagunitas, Left Hand, Rogue, Dogfish Head, North Coast, Great Lakes, Victory, Founders, Three Floyds, a ton of Ommegang, Sand Creek, Harbor City and lots of New Glarus and Capital. They have the Great Lakes region just about as well covered as Woodmans, plus some good national distro beer. And it's all cold, kept in a big walk-in cooler.
I needed no help, other than deciding how much Central Waters and Lake Louie I could carry out. In my experience the staff is mostly bored but not unpleasant people who have yet to reach the drinking age.
Jenifer Street is not a destination liquor store -- even though it out-beers 90 percent of the liquor stores I have shopped -- but I have yet to visit a plain old neighborhood grocery that looked like it even made a ham-handed attempt at something like Jeni's beer selection. Need to pick up a bag of charcoal, some salsa and a couple perfect six packs east of the Capitol? This is the place.
It is not cheap -- with the exception of some of the domestic bombers -- but such is life. You want a sixer of Storm King? You gotta pay.

Edit: December 06 - Jenny Street has changed so much recently, I need to completely rereview. Until then please note my opinion that singles aside, Jenny Street is now the best place to buy beer in Madison.
Jenny Street now carries:
All Lake Louie
All Central Waters
All Goose Island
All New Glarus
All Ale Asylum
Tons of Belgians, Germans, and British beers too.
Pre-review Note: This is a great place to buy Lake Louie and New Glarus Unplugged.
The Jennifer Street Market is a small neighborhood market on Madisons near east side next to the Schoeps ice cream factory. They have excellent produce and the best butchery in town.
My favorite thing about Jenny St., however, is the lovely little beer/cheese department where you can find a hundred or so good brews and several dozen great cheeses all within about 200 square feet.
Jenny St. offers a full assortment of local micro brews such as New Glarus (including the unhinged line), Capitol, Berghoft, etc They have a fare amount of other domestics and a decent foreign selection. Its nothing too impressive but all the basics are covered and for the size, price, and convenience of the store, I think that it holds up pretty well.
Prices can be hit and miss as some brews like Berghoft are certainly overpriced, especially when compared to the nearby Woodmans. Still, this is probably just the result of market forces as Berghoft is an extremely popular beer in the Jenny St. neighborhood (Dont ask me why, it just is).
By far the best single deal that Jenny Street offers is on Ommegang. For at least the last 9 months, they have been offering all of Ommegangs brews for only $3.99. Every other store that Ive seen them at in Madison charges at least a buck and a half more, making Ommegang at Jenny St. a steal.
Otherwise, I would comment that Jenny St.s beers are always fresh. They dont seem to sell old or expired beer or at least I havent ever had a bad experience in the two years that I have been shopping there.
The service isnt really there to answer any questions or anything about the beer but the checkout girls are friendly and the guys at the butchery really know their meat. They can be a big help to the griller.
Jenny St. also has a good selection of cut flowers at low prices so when you go there and blow $50 bucks on beer, you can also spend $5 on flowers so that your girlfriend wont kick your rear. Then again, what are you doing with a girlfriend who doesnt get excited over $50 worth of beer anyways?
Since the end of August, Jenny street has been rapidly increasing their supply of awesome beers. Selection has gone from a 4 to a 4.5.
edit, May 27: Jenny St's beer dept. is under construction. It will reopen with a large walk-in cooler soon. Until then, beer selection is limited but Ommegang is still cheap. :)
edit, October 18, the beer department has been back open for some time. Bring a winter coat, they're not fibbing when they call it the coldest beer cooler in Madison. Sadly, Ommegang beers cost a buck more now.
