Poured from the bottle into a stemless wine glass. From notes.

Deep black to brown walnut color, but a bit thin out of the bottle. Lots of cola carbonation sticking to the sides of the glass. Very fleeting cocoa brown and tan collar, that settles to pencil thin ring. Very fizzy looking.

Aroma is filled with chocolate, but comes off like kids breakfast cereal. Cocoa powder, and a nice waffer biscuit like quality. Kind of neat but seems kind of cheap and artificial smelling.

Palate brings more of the poor chocolate angle. Light bodied for even a milk stout, but manage to pull off a mild char like character. Lots of cocoa powder and dry character, but it's like drinking a bowl of cocoa puff cereal. Mid palate has a nice waffer like crispness to it as well but the body is extremely fizzy.

Overall a neat fun beer, but it comes off like instant chocolate mix just dumped into it.

Served in room temperature.

Appearance: Pitch black. Pours a tiny head with a brown tint.

Aroma: Super sweet, milky, caramel/toffee, chocolate, vanilla bean. The vanilla makes the aroma very delicious, but the sweetness may be too much.

Taste: Not as sweet as I expected, although there's certainly sweetness present. Vanilla fades away, but there is a nice dark chocolate bitterness with soft, milky undertones. Quite light though.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full-bodied, smooth. Almost no carbonation.

Overall: A tasty beer, with some originality. It is a sweet stout, but not overwhelming by any means, and the vanilla bean aroma and flavours support the sweetness quite well, balancing it out. I think this beer could take some more alcohol, but on the other hand it's nice to have a beer of this style that not barley wine strength for a change. Solid beer.

A: Pours a nice looking dark brown liquid into the glass. The light brown head is uneven and foamy and leaves some nice lacings on the glass. The head slowly dissolves into a thin layer with uneven bubbles.

S: Smells a lot of chocolate and sweets. Milk chocolate comes to my mind. Chocolate cake and lots of vanilla at the end. The hops are well hidden among the chocolate. Almost to sweet for my liking.

T: Not as sweet as I expected judging from how it smells. Quite sour at first before tastes like pear, vanilla and raisins takes over. Finsishes off with a lot of milk chocolate and some brown sugar. The aftertaste is mildly bitter.

M: Light in body. Medium carbonation. Feels a bit watery.

O: All in all a decent beer which I find to be more like a lightweight porter with chocolate than a heavier stout. It is worth a try but it nothing special really.

(Notes of 05/08/2010) Purchased at the BSF bar, GBBF 2010; BB 19/11/2011, served lightly chilled in a straight imperial pint glass.

A: pours a pitch black hue, the thick and well-lasting froth is dark beige - light tan in colour, on top of mid-level carbonation.
S: mainly, the aroma of vanilla-sweet cocoa or real chocolates fills the nostrils, sweet but not OTT; a swirl brings out more chocolate milk, toffee and honey. Quite sweet on the balance.
T: like a stout, medium-minus bodied, sweet-sour upfront but quickly leading to a roasty second half, before more notes of vanilla, cocoa beans, and a tinge of sour berries take over in the aftertaste. Slightly chewy at the end, though not really bitter (neither roasted- nor hoppy-bitter).
M&D: super smooth on the mouthfeel but also light-bodied, benefiting from the finely-tuned fizz level (just enough); this choco-featured dark ale is roughly balanced, aromatic and likeable, albeit lacking some kind of a niche to make it truly impressive overall.
