Easy to find pub in Federation square. All glass & metal, with views of the street & surrounds. Bit sterile & cold.
Didn't know whether to order by name or number, as the bottled beers are lined up across the top of the bar with corresponding numbers.
The barmaid was a bit gruff, and upon my requesting a glass, proceeded to pour the bottle contents slowly, and all the way. Then threw the bottle out.
So, no head, and no chance to read the bottle. Poor practice.
Another barman made up for it, allowing me to take bottle & glass away to please myself.
While seated, a tin-rattler came up and asked for a donation. Feeling magnanimous, I duly obliged. The poor fellow was then subjected to a threatening dressing-down by the bar manager, in front of punters.
Again, poor practice.
Drank Coldstream, Arctic Fox, Stone & Wood. At about $8-$8.50.... a little steep, but not inordinately so.
Excellent beer range.

Transport is a great place. As long as you aren't there on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night. The atmosphere is lacking to say the least. It's a great location which obviously has its ups and downs. On the up it ensures its always "buzzing" on the down it means that theres a lot of people who are there to be seen.
Selection wise its very good, a tad pricey but thats to be expected given the location. A decent selection of aussie micro brews (Red Oak, Little Creatures, Holgate) and a great internatinal selection...as long as your smart. For example Weihenstephen at $11 whereas Orval is only $10.
All in all there are better places in Melbourne, still pricey but it won't be beaten for location.

transport isnt my favorite place to go to in melbourne, but given the right time, i do like to get in here when i can.
being a bit of a trendy bar/nightclub kind of set up, it tends to get crowded with the sorts of people i dont like drinking around. but if i get in early with a few mates, and get a table outside, its actually a good place to have a few brews and watch the city move around you. best things about this place are they have the best selection of bottled beers going around in this state, and at a very good price. and then theres the restaurant upstairs, taxi. i can safely say you will not eat a better meal anywhere in melbourne. they also have some ok beers on tap too.
my only real beef with this place is that for all the beers they have, some of the staff dont know how to handle them. they tend to give you a 'what kind of idiot are you?' when you start making requests for particualr glasses and beers to be a certain temperature etc. my stance if that if you are going to have the range, make sure the beers are at their best.
apart from that, its not a bad place to go and get a few in (along with an excellent meal) before heading of for a night on the town.

Transport probably the best beer selection in Melbourne, although like the first reviewer said, if you order an obscure beer you might find out they're all out. You definately pay for that selection, though. $10+ per bottle for many imports, and even $7/bottle for some Aussie beers like Little Creatures.
Decor is trendy and cosmopolitan, plenty of places to sit down, inside and out. It's a pretty cool place and worth checking out. My only complaint are the high prices, but what are ya gonna do?

I heard about Transport from fellow BA's in the forum's. The prospect of 121 beers availiable was too hard a temptation to resist. So I had to go and see for myself.
Parking at Transport is always difficult because it is in the middle of the city. So unless you plan on paying some hard earn cash it can be down right a pain in the @$$,
The bar itself is like any bar. Big bar area and then seating. It has a modern design. There are allot of concrete slabs and wooden beams to sit on. Cool but maybe not everyone's cup of tea.
The Service is ok and the food is reasonable for a city bar. I had some fried chips with wasabi mayonase. Not bad at all.
Now, the beers... The selection truely is a spectical. The whole back page of the menu is reserved for the beers alone. They are a bit pricey but once again, nothing new for a city bar.
The only problem I have is the fact that although they claim to have 121 beers, the beers are subject to availiability. One beer in particular I have been there a few times to try and its never been availiable. Thats the only reason why they get good instead of exceptional in the beer selection criteria.
Otherwise a nice bar and a good place to hang out and have a drink and a feed on a friday afternoon after work.
Also, as a note. They also have beer tasting nights. Currently its on a tuesday. But I'm sure that too will be subject to availiability. Call ahead. Free beer is always cool.
