Founders Brewing
Frangelic Mountain Brown Ale
LOOK: Brownish color, fine clarity. Soapy head leaving heady lace.
SMELL: Hazlenut coffee and vanilla. Hints of roasted malt. Has a candied nuts smell that is super inviting.
TASTE: Nutty, vanilla cream, mild coffee and roasted malts. Very mild bitterness and finishes a bit on the sweet side. There is no trace of the 9% abv.
FEEL: Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Coffee and Hazlenut flavors linger in the finish.
OVERALL: A really tasty brew from Founders. Big Hazlenut flavor and a bit of vanilla. I think this is a delicious brown ale, one well worth revisiting.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a tulip glass.
A: Slightly hazy, light brown color with a partial residue of loose light beige bubbles. Light scattered lacing remains on the glass.
S: Complimentary brown malt, toasted hazelnuts, and surprisingly fresh coffee are seamlessly joined in the nose. Intensity is very appropriate--resonant but not overpowering or cloying. No alcohol is detected.
T: Begins dry, with mild malt that is very well-toasted. Coffee-derived depth develops after a few beats, progressing through the middle in a focused and clean fashion. Some acidity develops during the latter half of the profile, revving up when flavors should be easing into the finish. Lingering flavors represent all of those encountered thus far, with the added influence of a green-herbaceous thread and some associated. No alcohol is detected.
M: Medium viscosity, acidic on the palate late, with moderate carbonation.
D/O: This strong brown ale yields some traditional and attractive qualities, but it isn't quite able to reach the desired comfort level of what a high-gravity beer ideally should. There is nothing about it that suggests to the drinker to sip and savor.

I had this 5/24/13 despite it only being brewed once and over a year old.
The color is a cloudy brown, light white white head.
The aroma has hazelnut coffee, sweet caramel, and vanilla. It really pushes the suggestion of what it's to be, hazelnut coffee.
The flavor is at first just huge caramel. Then there's mostly caramel and big roast flavors that you wouldn't get from most brown ales. There's a light coffee flavor. The big roast flavor is huge and at 9% ABV this is a dangerous beer with the mouthfeel.
There is a slight bitter finish so the hops show, despite the age.
With comparison, this has a lot of similarities obviously with Rogue Hazelnut Brown, but with more coffee and a much bigger roasted malt. It's one of the best brown ales I've had. How wonderful tasting.
