bottle poured into my kbs snifter.

a - pours black. very dark for a barleywine. no head.

s - big smell on this one. big hops and sweetness similar to how DIPAs smell. both pine and citrus hops. caramel sweetness. not as much booze as i was expecting

t - as the nose leads on, hops and sweetness. there is also a charred malts flavor that accentuates the hops bitterness. Its amazing how much of a sweetness there is, but yet there is a deep lingering bitterness. Very tasty right now, and should develop spectacularly as there is a solid malt flavor to take over as the hops dies down.

m - medium-heavy body. carbonation is there, but not so much as to take away from the thickness.

overall - very happy with this beer. I had it on tap a couple weeks before the bottles came out and didn't like it at all....not sure why, but it tastes so much better in the bottle. if you had it on tap, try a bottle.

look: 4.25 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

APPEARANCE: Looks more like a Brown Ale or a Porter than a Barleywine, this is very dark brown in color. The head only last for about ten seconds, but while it's there it is a dark eggshell color and about an eighth of an inch thick. There is no lacing at all.

SMELL: It actually smelled better out of the bottle than when it was poured into the glass. I have to say this was a first for me. In the bottle all of the typical, sweet Barleywine smells came through strong. When it was poured into the glass they all seemed to fade a little bit and a lot of unexpected, smoky aromas came through. It was still quite pleasant, but not as intense as I would like.

TASTE: The first thing that stands out to me is how well the hops have hung in there. This is still a hoppy beer three years in. The finish is quite bitter and the hops are supplemented in their bitterness by hints of coffee and dark chocolate. The sweeter flavors all come first though, caramel, toffee, vanilla and some sweet spices greet the palate while some banana and other dark fruits dance around in the background.

MOUTHFEEL: Someone below me said this was medium bodied. I'd have to disagree, to me it was very big. Sweet and complex throughout, but drying as it goes down. Very smooth and drinkable with a complete lack of booziness.

OVERALL: I hate finishing a Founders beer, especially since I'm in Colorado. I can't just go get another. Ultimately, this beer holds up very well and I would imagine it has a couple of good years left as long as it was treated properly.

Presentation: 12 oz. stubby bottle I have kept in the cellar for a couple years. Decided to open this up recently so I chilled this down. Poured into my Kate the Great tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours almost zero head. Surprisingly lack of carbonation. Dark brown in color but some light does get through.

Aroma: Nice earthy pine tones from the hops. Definitely a pretty strong hop presence given the age. Chocolate and caramel backing with almost no oxidation.

Taste: Pine, light citrus and a strong earthiness really take hold and dominate. The malt comes through nicely and lends a slight cocoa bitterness. Lots of chocolate and brown sugar. Hides the ABV really well.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is definitely noticably absent. Not flat persay but close. Medium bodied.

Overall, a really nice tasty black barleywine with some nice hop character. Nicely balanced. The lack of carbonation (not sure if it just this bottle?) does not hurt this too much at all.
