Appearance- 4.0 a nice dark almost black pour with some gorgeous mocha head

Smell- 3.5 smells almost nutty... Lots of roasted malts

Taste- 3.0 hits first with some roasted malt and some sharp burning bourbon. Too hot and unbalanced while it's cold...

Mouthfeel- 3.0 sharp booziness and almost bitterness that makes this beer feel not so great on the palette

Drinkability- 3.0 really lacking overall sadly :( gets a bit better as it warms up but still not a favorite of mine

On Tap at the Founders tasting at Dutch's Bar and Bottle shop in Hyde Park. 09 vintage

A: Dark pour, almost stout worthy. Not a lot of head.

S: Definitely a bourbon nose, with some cocoa and hints of vanilla spice mixed in.

T: Bourbon feel was subtle, finish was hints of vanilla, coffee and cocoa

M: Smooth, yet complex and the bourbon aging made it tall the more easy to go down.

D: Very drinkable and enjoyable. Wish this was around more often!

Big thanks to Greg for sharing this one. Though I was disappointed it wasn't served from one of his patented water bottle growlers.

A: The pour is deep and dark, nearly black with a minimal mocha head on top.

S: One of those rare beers that you have a hard time getting to the drinking because it just smells so good. Full of chocolate, vanilla, a hint of bourbon, and an almost oatmeal cookie-like aroma.

T: The sweet vanilla is very intense and works wonders with the chocolate, mild roast, and smooth bourbon flavors.

M: A medium bodied beer with a really smooth mouthfeel and low carbonation. I don't know if that was by design or from the growler, but I like it.

D: Another in a long line of awesome beers from Founders. I need to make it out to Michigan one of these days.

Inky black with hints of off white/brown foam and decent lacing.
Smells very boozy, lots of bou1rbon, nicely sweet with some decent hops. Some nice chocolate and coffee with caramel and toffee.
Sweet and creamy, deep biting finish of dark chocolate. Bourbon doesn't come through as much as in the smell. Rich and thick with some decent hops that give it the bitterness. Dry finish makes it easy to sip.

Pours a very dark brown, nearly black color. Mocha head fades away after a couple minutes.

Roasted grains, with some chocolate notes. A nice blend of nutty, oaky and bourbon notes.

Roasty with some darker chocolate notes. Nice rounded oak and bourbon flavors. A hint of vanilla.

Medium body, lower carbonation, which could just be because it is in the growler. Some alcohol is noticable. This is a very nice beer. The barrel adds a great character.

Wonderful deep inky black in color with a small tannish head.

Not over abundance of bourbon in the nose but a great bourbon and oak character with roasty dark malts, hints if chocolate and some dark fruit notes.

This is damn tasty balanced and complex. Semi sweet bourbon notes, milk chocolate, roasted dark malts, black tea, toasty vanilla oak, currant, plum, black cherry, hints of hop.

Mouth is rich and creamy and oh so drinkable.

Notes from Brewery visit.

There is a bit of lacing on the glass with a white head on the sides.

The taste brings about a woody earthy tone. Quite a bit of vanilla sweetness, biscuit, and just a mild bourbon flavor.

There is a bit of a dry finish with some booze sting on the tongue.

A mid level sipper, a very balanced and delicious Porter.

Draft sample at MBGF Summer08.

Poured a black color with a moderate frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted, coffee, nutty and woody bourbon aroma. Medium to full body with a creamy texture. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet tingly finish of moderate duration.

Solid standout brew.

A 12oz pour with a nice thick tan head and opaque black color.

Smelled like bourbon, chocolate, and some coffee.

Tasted the bourbon the most at first, then mellowed into a mild chocolate taste.

Medium to mid-heavy body but went down very easily.

Very drinkable beer and would love to have this again.

Srved on nitro tap at Hop-Cat BA party. Pours out to a solid, creamy black with a pancake batter like head with very good retention and solid sheets of lacing. Carbonation is mild. The aroma is akin to a chocolate milk shake with a healthy dose of Kahlua and bourbon. The mouthfeel is luxuriously creamy, silken and soft. Probably the finest mouthfeel I've ever had in a beer, bar Rogue Imperial Chocolate Stout on nitro from the source in Portland. The taste is out of this world. Absolutely delicious. One of the finest beers I've ever had, and infinitely drinkable. I could put down pint after pint of this stuff. Heavenly.

Jeremy, this stuff is probably one of the finest beers I've ever tasted. Keep brewing it!

On nitro-tap on 7-21-08 at Founders, Just over 8% ABV I don't remember to the tenth percent.

A: BLACK, with a light brown head about a 1/2 inch that held throughout the beer.

S: little bit of alcohol, and a little coffee

T: Starts very smooth/creamy then you are hit with flavor, switching to a complex combination of vanilla, smoke, coffee and alcohol yet it finishes very well. You just want to take one more sip.

M: Great, smooth start with a slight alcohol kick to the end.

D: Great, mix of complex flavors with a smooth/creamy start. You just have to love it.

Tried this on-tap at the brewery the day after Christmas 2007. Served in a snifter. The board said the beer is 9% ABV.

A: Poured an opaque black, with a tan head. Lots of lacing, great head retention.

S: Lots going on here: coffee, oak, caramel, touch smokey, vanilla.

T: Very nice, although not as complex as the aromas: coffee, wood smokiness, vanilla.

M: Medium-to-high thickness. Very smooth and well carbonated.

D: This is an excellent Porter, right up there with the best I've tasted. I haven't seen this at the brewery since, but I would gladly try it again.
