Decanted from an extremely fresh 12oz bottle (Bottled On Date: 01/23/12) into a 14oz snifter @ ~40F. I would also like to make mention of the incredible artwork on the label (be sure to view it both upright and inverted).

A- Pours a hazy, yellow-orange (think of the sunrise as it breaks the horizon on a tropical island). Being a winter seasonal, gives me hope that I am one day closer to Spring. Directing the fluid to the center of the glass (i.e. aggressive pour), I was able to elicit about a 1-finger of white, whispy head.

S- Wow! My olfactory hues are engulfed with citrus...sweet orange/tangerine with tropical fruit esters. As the head subsides, bitter orange and grapefruit rind comes to the fore. No detecable piney notes the way so many IIPA's tend to flaunt. Extremely mouthwatering...clean, bright, puckering goodness.

T- Since eloquence is fighting me, I cannot describe this any other way than alcoholic grapefruit juice. The malts support but never dominate, allowing the hops to shine as brightly as this beer's appearance. The hops (and agree with Seanto's review) that the flavor of this beer is as a result of late hop additions. Despite the IBU's, the bittering hops comes in well after taking a sip and the malts quietly do their part to smooth everything out. The alcohol has a warming effect in the chest but is not detectable in the taste.

M- Although my only criticism from an otherwise perfect score, I feel the mouthfeel could benefit from a bit more aggressive carbonation. Not only would that promote a pithier head, but it would allow the bitterness to dance on the palate a bit more. Perhaps Founders would consider bottle conditioning this beer in the future which might assist with adding more carbonation.

O- "O" for Outstanding. Despite the ABV and (seemingly) modest grain bill, this beer is well balanced (for the style) and dangerously easy drinking. Hopheads rejoice and figure out a way to get your hands on at least a bottle before this one disappears until next winter. Founders continues to amaze me with their brewing prowess.

Final comment: Some may criticize (as I think some have written) that this beer suffers from being one dimensional by not possessing the usual plethora of aromas/flavors found in other IIPA's. However, I have never tasted anything as clean, crisp and unfettered...in this case, simplicity is Double Trouble's charm.

Ok, to preface, this is my favorite DIPA to date...

A: Murky golden , vibrant and dangerous!

S: Astringent citrus , bright hoppy heaven. If you stuck this under my nose blindfolded I might claim it to be grapefruit juice. Only, there are some very faint malt scents at the end and alcohol is detectable.

T: Oh yes baby! This is the brew for me! I have had this on tap a number of times recently and only today found it as a 4 pack for 11.99. I am pleasantly surprised that it tastes just as fine from the bottle as it does on tap. In fact, I think it is is even better from the bottle than the last time I had it on tap. Ok...back to the tasting notes...

The first thing I notice about this beer is how well rounded it is. Surely it is extremely hoppy and bitter, but the initial impression it leaves is bitter then immediately sweet and fruity, floral and then bitter grapefruit and a gentle sweet mellow malt to close. It is as if the brew dances in your mouth, a beautiful round circle of balanced flavors. At the bar when discussing with the bartender last I had this on tap, I made a circle motion with my finger and he understood what I meant. The flavor cadence dances in your mouth! Your mouth is laced with a deep bitterness, almost like drinking grapefruit juice on an empty stomach in the morning. BAM. This is a masterful brew.

M: Silky sweet, smooth and thin and mellow but potent carbonation. Drink a few of these and you definalty feel the bubbles in your gut...The carbonation is certainly present but does not distract from the flavor. It feels slightly tingly in your mouth. It ends up feeling much lower in APV than the 9.4% that it is. Velvety smooth and prickly sharp.

D: Usually I would not place a beer at 9.4% as a 5 for drinkability, but alas, this beer is just so damn tasty that is is utterly drinkable. The few times It has been on tap at my craft beer bar I start , and end with it, maybe trying one other beer in the middle and deciding it was a mistake to abandon perfection. A+

12oz Bottle into Duvel Tulip

A: Gold with light orange hues. Two finger fluffy off white head. Lacing is thick and sticky.
S: Citrus, orange grapefruit, some danky resin and pine. Touch of sweet malt and a bit of bozziness.
T: Tastes as the nose predicted, ton of citrus, orange grapefruit. Nice malt backbone but not too balanced, as I prefer. Starts and finishes bitter!
M: Smooth creamy mouth feel.
D: This drinkability is outstanding, the 9.4 is fairly well hidden overall.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance- Nice orange/gold color with a nice amount of head with lacing thoughout drinking.

Smell- Amazing citrus hops smell, totally inviting me to enjoy the beer.

Taste- Citrus hops right out in front, with a solic malt backbone to hold the beer together. Very tasty.

Mouthfeel- Very bitter, but not overwhelming at all, exactly the mouthfeel that I would expect from this type of beer.

Drinkability- This beer is very dangerous! I would never have put this beer at 9.4. I have had some beers half as strong that do not go down as easily. Very drinkable, everytime I have one, I already want another. This may be the most underrated beer out there right now!

On-tap at Haymarket Chicago

A - It pours a radiant golden hue, capped with a picture-perfect white head, and deposits its fair share of lace upon the glass' side.

S/T - Amazing from the get-go; the nose suggests that this may be the best DIPA ever, and the first sip pretty much confirms. Ungodly amounts of citrus, pine, and mango waft from the glass and saturate the palate. Mango. More mango. Passion fruit. Evergreen forest. Ganja. Organic earthiness. Lemon. Grapefruit. Tangerine. These notes are all so sharp, and so supremely integrated. Fantastic, ridiculous, amazing, perfect.

M - Definitely a lighter feeling DIPA; really enhancing.

O - Beautiful in all ways. Drinking this side-by-side with Port Mongo and FFF Arctic Panzer Wolf, I am amazed how exponentially better it is than the aforementioned, which are very very good in their own right.

Pours clear golden orange with a thick off-white head. Thin film of head lingers. Lots of lacing.

Aroma is a mix of sweetness and bitter hops. Very citrusy with lots of grapefruit, lemon, and pine. Enticing and inviting.

Taste is dominated by hops. Bitter grapefruit, orange peel and unripe citrus upfront. Very brief bready malt middle present after it warms. Finish echoes the taste upfront with lots of hop bitterness. Bitter grapefruit mixes with some sweetness, light orange and tangerine. Lingering bitter grapefruit.

Medium body with medium carbonation. Clean finish with a light dryness.

Amazing. Great hop presence and bitterness while maintaining a light enough body to stay highly drinkable. Something about this beer makes me want more and more.

12 oz bottle poured into a chilled Odell's IPA pint glass. Bottled on 12/23/11.

A: Pours a beautiful golden amber color with a good one finger white, foamy head.Nice sticky lacing coats the glass and gradually recedes over time.

S: Citrus and tropical hops are just wonderful in this beer. Smell some floral notes and some pine as well.

T: Tastes like it smells. Tons of tropical sweetness right off the bat and finishes with a nice piney, floral aftertaste.

M: Has a nice creamy taste to start with an excellent bitter finish that balances the beer perfectly. Medium bodied and decent carbonation.

O: One of my favorite DIPA's and a better beer IMO than Hopslam. Founders strikes it rich again.

on-tap into a goblet

a: a hazy golden yellow, one finger of head, dissipates quickly, nice lacing as I slowly sipped it.

s: this is what I love double trouble for: strong pineapple aroma, with some orange, and even lemon, citrus and pine strongly present as well.

t: more a strong piney than the citrus flavors in the nose. crisp bitterness, quite refreshing, some malt presence, alcohol content incredibly well hidden

o: my favorite hop bomb, dangerously drinkable yet incredibly complex from the aroma to the taste.

A - Pours a pretty light orange/golden hazy color. Big white 2 finger head on my pour and a nice amount of thick lacing.

S - Ahhh, I could smell this all day. Big Tangerine, Grapefruit and floral hops with a hint of sweet honey.

T - Big on citrus fruit and and bitterness in the front and end. Middle has a slight sweet malty, honey flavor to break up the bitterness just for a moment.

M - Nice carbonation. Leaves oily residue on the tongue and is sticky sweet with bitter finish.

O - Fantastic IIPA; this is one of my favorite spring time beers.

I don't even know where to begin. You know how after you drink an amazing IPA you taste it at random times of the day in the future? Well this beer did that to me.

Juicy hops cones, ripe blood orange, grapefruit, mango. Long sweet and bitter finish. This beer has it all, and it officially in my top 3 DIPA along with Enjoy By and Sucks.

I travel a lot for work, just deployed to Atlanta, so stopped by Hop City to grab some Founders which I don't have back in NY.

Appearance - golden amber, minor carbonation. Small head that quickly disappeared leaving only minor lacing. Right now seems somewhat lackluster. Not cloudy at all.

Smell - very fruity/citrusy. Strawberries, peach, pineapple, smell lots of fruit in this one. Very sweet, floral. Fruity esters.

Taste - AMAZING! So much flavor on this imperial ipa. All the sweet/sourness of a fruit salad. Definitely taste some blackberries. Extremely well balanced.

Mouthfeel - Very light and thin. Not much carbonation as I'm used to in an ipa, but goes down incredibly smooth.

Drinkability - So easy to drink this 9.4% IIPA. Alcohol is hidden very well by the amazing fruity/hoppy flavor. I would have another. So much for saving the 3 left out of my four pack to bring back to NY!

One of my favorite beers. It has a wonderful color and exquisite smell where you can really pick out the different flavors. The only area it lacks is it drinkability as it can be a little harsh but again this might be nitpicking as I believe it is fantastic beer.

Hazy gold in color, yet not opaque. Stark white head isn't huge but substantial enough when poured aggressively.

Wow! - an explosion of pineapple, sugared grapefruit, peach, and pine. Tremendous.

The taste is sweet up front from sugared grapefruit notes and caramel apple-like malt. The malt lays a foundation for all the bright citrus flavors to dance on - and boy are they dancing. Finish has a soft, forgiving bitterness that's almore more bittersweet and also provides a faux crisp mouthfeel.

Drinkability is dangerous. I do not taste 9.4%ABV.

SIDE NOTE:
I just had my first bottles of fresh Pliny the Elder not too long ago. And I have to say, as much as I liked Pliny, I prefer this one to Pliny because it offers more complexity as opposed to Pliney's one-note character.

Poured from a 12oz glass into a snifter.
Pours a hazy, sandy orange with lots of cloudiness and a unique fogginess. It starts with a 2 finger that dissipates quickly. Throughout the entire beer there is a nice lacing left around the glass. I smell citrus, pine, slight hops, grapefruit, and a slight orange undertone.

This beer has a wonderful beginning hoppy, cirtusey, and bold bitterness balanced with a slight maltiness and smokiness as you finish. I taste an almost bittersweet taste blended with the constant bombardment of hops throughout the beer. This is an absolutely great beer.

It has a full chewy almost oily mouthfeel to begin that is countered by the carbonation that leaves a great hoppy bitterness aftertaste.

I love this beer....it has awesome bitterness with a blitzkrieg of hops throughout. Highly recommend and is surprisingly easy at 9.4%.

Cheers...GREAT BEER!!

Hazy, cloudy golden yellow with almost a finger of head. Adequate lacing. Decent retention. Looks good, if a little light in color for a DIPA.

Whoo-hoo! Luscious hop aromatics , really citrus, mingled with malts, fruits and some banana. Very nice balance on the nose. A real delight and a sure preview of what's to follow in the mouth.

WAABAMM!!! Dittos, the flavors are right on par with what the nose previewed, and then some. Really sweet citrus, some tropical fruits with solid malt characters. The hops really shine in this one. Nice light dryness there, also. But not overly so. For those who like the citrus flavors in their IPAs, you will love this. Alcohol well-hidden.

Body is rather medium for a beer heavy on flavor and alcohol. Appropriate carbonation levels.

This is a solid Double/Imperial IPA, a true hophead's orgasm. Recommend. I hope I will be able to get it more often.

Pours a pale yellow color with one finger of white head.

Scent of strong piny hops, grapefruit, sugars, grass, and earth. There is a nice depth to this one, accompanied with a great, but not overpowering scent of hops. Absolutely excellent bitterness with some juiciness and no detectable alcohol, just heavenly.

Taste of strong piny hops, grass, citrus, grapefruit, sugars, and some grain. Finishes with a lasting hop bitterness. This is like an tuned up version of their Harvest Ale. Very bitter, but not overly so for this hop head. You couldn't convince me this beer is 9.4%.

Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with a nice bite of carbonation.

Pours a light hazy amber with a smaller head than I expected but some nice lacing.

Smells of strong piney, orange/grapefruit citrus, HUGE hops; with a very nice malt background.

Taste is a huuuuge amout of hops, citrus followed by a bit of alcohol with a very nice malt background. Bitter finish. Just what i expect from an DIPA...hoppy as hell but balanced.

The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a bit of alcohol reminding you that your drinking a damn near 10%-er.

This is one of my favorite DIPA's...up there with HopSlam.

Tasting notes from a few months back, dont have the exact date was near this years release.

Had in a New Belgium Globe.
A - Pours a nice, bright golden color. A bit hazy, but not overly. Pretty normal head for the style. Started big, dissipated almost instantly. A bit surprised by the small amount of lacing. It's there, but not huge.
S - Smells fantastic. Not strong unless you get right up in it, but once you do, pretty equal nice, strong floral hops and big malt notes.
T - Absolutely fantastic. Amazingly well balanced between malt and hop. Big on both, they don't cancel each other out at all. Starts nice and hoppy, with great floral notes. Moves on to super malt on the back, along with just enough of the 9.4 ABV to notice. But overall, the booze is well hidden. Just enough there to remind you. Great flavor all the way through.
M - Great. Not too heavy, not to light. Solid, strong body.
D - One of the best DIPA's for drinkability. I really wish I had (or could get) another. So smooth and balanced, the ABV is really the only thing standing between you and an entire 6 pack.

While I tend to stay pent up during the winter months, the release of double trouble allowed me to see the beauty of this time of year. More double IPA or IIPA's tend to come out this time of year, and it makes me love winter. Double trouble is one example of how great winter IPA's can be. Mango, orange, pineapple, and pine dominate this beer's profile and I love it. A nice golden color, and perfect clarity (I assume due to filtering) keep this beer visually appealing. A great beer, it gonna keep me coming back.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass, bottle dated 1/06/12. Pours a clear orange yellow, with a one inch fluffy white head, with attractive lace. Smell is tangerine, pineapple, pine, and some grass. Taste is all of that with nothing dominating, with a hit of grapefruit in the finish. Body is on the large side, still very approachable, in-between lush and dry, with plenty of life. This is really one of the best DIPAs period. Love this brewery.

From bottle to wine glass. Bottled on Dec 22, 2009. This review is from my notes but I'm also sipping on one as I type.

A: Average size head, foamy, stark white and long lasting. Eventually the head settles into a sudsy collar and film. Very few active bubbles are visible. Excellent lacing. The body is a light honey colored orange and mildly hazy.

S: Sweet malts of cookie, toasted or better yet, fresh-out-of-the oven. Heavy hop content, orange, grapefruit and pine, in that order. Slightly perfumey. Awesome profile.

T: The alcohol isn't completely hidden, but the wildly intense aroma and flavor more than make up for it. First thing that comes to mind is the clementine punch, followed up by peach and pineapple. The balance of these secondary flavors could not be in better equilibrium. The flavors last long in the mouth and are adequately sweet and bitter.

M: The body isn't light but it certainly isn't much fuller than medium. Creamy texture with just above average carbonation. Finishes slightly chalky and definitely bitter.

D: I don't buy many cases of beer, but a brew that drinks this well, I need to have at my disposal. Basically a steal for $60 a case.

Smells of very deep resiny pine forest with the citrus blasting through as well. There's also a sourness to the nose that mixes in with all the hop smells. The taste is crisp hops citrus hops with a pine finish. It has a very nice syrupy mouthfeel like a double IPA should. When I poured this a thick haze poured into the bottle because of how many hops they put in this beer. This is my first Founder's and it tastes like I'm drinking an IPA from the West Coast. As this warms the bitterness really builds up on the tongue in a chalky bitter type way which is awesome for the style.

Actually, I had a Lagunita's MAXIMUS before this and the two beers are definitely neck and neck as amazing IPA's. This being a double and stronger. It looks and sort of tastes like the Hop Wallop by Victory but with more pine and a thicker mouthfeel. Besides it being dry from the hops it still manages to have an almost salivating mouthfeel to it that makes you want to have another sip. Not to mention the sweet unroasted malt they use in this is a great backing for the choice of hops.

You can taste the bready like malt on the aftertaste mixing in with the hops oh so well. What an awesome beer. It also reminds me of the Ballast Point with that almost off putting smell with the ridiculous amount of hops and probably the hop variety they use mixing together to create a huge unusual aroma you normally aren't used to smelling in a beer. You can also taste the grapefruit hops. I've found with these types of higher alcohol IPA's they are best to warm a bit and the bitterness and mouthfeel really come out to play. I will definitely be trying more Founder's beers now this is an Imperial IPA they should brew year round.

Appearance - A tremendous looking, cloudy orange color with a nice, tight, compact, bright white head. Some larger bubbles in the head. Pretty good retention and well above average lacing. The overall head appearance was not the best, but still rather attractive.

Smell - Whoa!!! A strong fruity, citrus aroma of orange juice and grapefruit juice. Smells floral and very fresh. Smells like the freshness of Spring. Some piny notes. Balanced perfectly. Some bready/biscuit tones come through as it warms. This aroma is outstanding.

Taste - More of the grapefruit and orange in the taste. The grapefruit seems to stand out a bit more in the taste than in the aroma. A strong, wonderful, appealing hop bite. No alcohol flavoring, but I do get the warmth. A super tasty brew. Again the bready/biscuit tones as it warms bring in more complexity.

Mouthfeel - Medium. Super dry. Enormous amounts of flavor left behind. It almost has me begging for another sip. Smooth. Crisp. Snappy. Clean.

Drinkability - Wow!!!! An incredible brew. Without a doubt one of the best beers I've ever had. I want another. I could definitely make a night of this. Very easy to drink. Would be great at anytime of the year. Crisp and snappy for Spring/Summer and a nice warming appeal for Fall/Winter. Outstanding. The high ABV is only a small setback because I wouldn't be able to gulp this all night.

I had this last night at MacNiven's in Indianapolis. The beer pours a very bright and clear gold in color with a minimal white head. It's very, very light in color for a DIPA. It smells of delicious grapefruit and has a light resinous hoppy aroma. God, this beer smells delicious! The flavor too is of fresh grapefruit and is wonderfully right in between sweet and bitter. The fruit is just downright superb. It drank light and very crisp. It has a nice bite and the alcohol is barely present at all. Overall this is a top notch beer and one of my favorites. I'm glad it doesn't disappoint out of the bottle OR on draft.
