I ordered this beer on tap last night. It was served in a tulip-shaped glass. It was golden yellow with no head. I blame that on the serever. It was opaque and hazy and easy on the nose. It smelled sweet and grapefruity and really piney. It tasted like bitter pine cone and lime with quite a bit of alcohol warmth. I recall a moderately thick and sweet texture, but not syrupy. It didn't go down to easily. It was a good beer but I only ordered one. It went well with my raw oysters.

Served from a 12oz bottle into a standard pint glass...purchased from Curtis Liquors in Cohasset, MA.
Appearance - Poured a hazy golden color with 2 fingers width of white frothly head. After the head settled, nice lacing could be found.
Smell - Strong hop smell. Notes of citrus (lemon and grapefruit) and earthy pine.
Taste - Very little malt flavor. Obviously there is a strong hop flavor. The citrus from the smell really comes through in the taste. The pine isn't as noticeable in the taste. The higher alcohol can be detected towards the end of the sip, but is overall well masked.
Mouthfeel - Has a thicker more syrupy feel which is expected from a DIPA. Very low carbonation, almost too low.
Drinkability - Pretty good considering this is a DIPA. I wouldn't want to have to many in one sitting but overall, this is a good beer.

Extra received from KJGAGNE in a recent trade. Thanks!
Bottled on 2/2/09. There's some age on this for sure. Will review accordingly. Poured into a goblet.
Pours a dark gold/orange with a thin off-white head on top. Smells of peppery hops, earth, and sweet candy. The mouth still retains a crisp, bubbly feel. Thought this would be a bit more flat. Starts out slightly sweet, but is still plenty bitter. Tons of peppery spicy hops still present. Dulled from time for sure, but still packs a punch. Gets more unbalanced as it warms. Sweetness flees, more bitterness takes its place.
There is still plenty of body and depth to this beer after 10 months. I bet this is a beast when fresh. I'll have to pick up some more next spring. Thanks for the opportunity, Kevin.

A: Pours a clear golden/copper color. A two finger white head forms instantly, and gently recedes to a ring. Sticky spiderweb looking lace is left behind.
S: Hops up front. Lightly floral and grassy. Some grapefruit bitterness. Grainy, sugary malt lingers.
T: Floral, grassy, and grapefruit hops. Lightly bitter. Actually this one might be more astringent than bitter as it warms up. Some very light sugary malt lingers.
M/D: A light to medium body. A bit to thin for my liking. Crisp and dry. Really not hard to drink considering the style and alcohol.
Not bad at all. A fairly standard DIPA. Certainly enjoyable, and worth a try (especially for those that are hop heads). It is just not my favorite of the style or brewery.

Double trouble is good... it's just not great. It is very hoppy, and that's certainly a good thing. The hop flavor blows away HopSlam both in violence and persistence. However, I just think DT lacks the delicate balance usually found in an excellent big beer, including the aforementioned Bell's product. This is especially noticeable in the flavor profile, but also comes through in the aroma of the beer. A good beer if you can get your hands on it, but there are better options at this ABV and in this style.

Poured from 12oz Bottle into 16oz Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass.
Appearance: Pours a hazy golden in color with a small white head that dissipates slowly and leaves lots of foam left floating on top of the beer.
Smell: Mostly tropical and citrusy hop aromas, with some slight floral hints.
Taste: Begins with a mango-esque flavor, finishing with a strong piney bitterness and some buttery malt notes alongside alcohol hints.
Mouthfeel: Medium body with light carbonation and a sticky finish.
Drinkability: A good beer, but lacks depth to be a truly great DIPA. Definitely a good beer and worth a shot, though if I'm in the mood for a DIPA, I'd look this one over in favor of others.

A -- A golden brew that pours into a two finger head and dissipates quickly into a light skim leaving light beads of lacing.
S -- A great hit of tropical fruits, mango, pineapple, and light essences of apricot and citrus rind.
T -- Citrus zest, grapefruit, bitter pineapple, a hint of malt peeks through but lacks the will to attempt balancing the brew.
M -- Slightly syrupy and resinous, fitting to the style. Highly drying with a long linger.
D -- Definitely worth a shot, a hint off balance but still solid.

If you like hops this beer is the way to go.
Both smell and taste contain an overabundance of hops. With the smell you get the strong scent of piney hoppiness and with taste you get a punch of hoppiness with a slight sense of sweetness that passes quickly and leaves the robust flavor of bitter hops in your mouth. And that flavor sticks for a while. The feeling it leaves is of a crisp, powerful IPA: A big bite with a hoppy aftertaste. Personally this is a strong IPA for me. I like an IPA with a little more balance to it, this beer seems to give too much hops. If you love hops and just hops in your beer than this beer is a winner. As for me I did enjoy it but just a hint too much bitter with only a little malt or sweetness to balance it out.

Thanks to Scoot1969 for the bottle!
Poured into a Goose Island pint glass. Almost clear, golden-yellow-wheat body. A much lighter, more yellow color than you typically see for a DIPA. Leaves about one finger of foamy white head on top and some subtle lacing.
Fairly hoppy with a good amount of citrus on the nose. Lemon zest and a touch of caramel. Green, leafy, hops.
The taste is sweet upfront with lemon infused biscuits. This transitions to a somewhat jarring wave of hops, which are almost too bitter. Leaves a slightly astringent, boozy, bitterness on the finish.
Mouthfeel is pretty good. Smooth up front with a rush of hops on the finish. The ABV is somewhat masked by the hops, but still comes through on the finish. Not a huge fan of the aftertaste.
Overall, this is a pretty decent DIPA, but with so many breweries pumping out DIPAs these days, Founders isn't quite cutting it with Double Trouble. Not a bad beer, but there are many other better DIPAs out there. However, the hop profile is unique enough that this might be a favorite for a few people.

A: hazy golden, glowing yellow in appearance with a generous, fluffy layer of head...aroma seems to be a part of the appearance, as it hits your nose as you pour
S: Citrusy, mango, pine, hoppy, hoppy, hoppy.. Very pleasant and warm smelling DIPA. Through the nose, makes my mouth smile!
T: See smell.
M: typical DIPA body....medium to fuller in body w/ carbonation ever present.
Overall a very good offering from founders, looking forward to how it compares to the devil dancer.

I've had a bottle of this kickin' in the fridge for some time now and I have finally decided to do a little write up. Right off the bat it looks a nice golden color with a puffy white head. The foam collapsed quicker than I'd expect, but that might be due to some soap residue on the glass. All in all though, it's a pretty nice looking beer. The aroma is very heavy with citrusy hops. It's a pleasant grapefruit smell with a little malt coming through as well. This beer really starts to lose me at the taste. It's not too bad, but it just seems to be hop juice. There is a little malty caramel flavor, like the aroma, and a little alcohol burn, but it's pretty much just in your face hops. Mouth feel is a little prickly but I wouldn't say it's overly carbonated, it's just right with just enough viscosity.
Overall not to bad, especially if you're in to big hop flavor. It's just not my favorite DIPA. I think there are some others that are a bit better balanced. Certainly wouldn't turn this down, but probably won't pick up again.

A - Golden yellow with one inch head that fades quickly.
S - Grapefruit, orange and citrus. Noticeable alcohol in the background.
T - Bready malts followed by a wave of bitter grapefruit. Some orange in there as well.
M - Medium with low to average carbonation.
O - This one is definitely a hop bomb with plenty of tongue buckling bitterness. Seems a bit one dimensional to me though.

Hazy orange with a tight white head. Excellent retention and lace. Tropical hop aroma, pinapples, mangos, citrus fruits, etc. Flavour is all about the tropical hops, with a big, sweet malt character to boot. Long, lingering bitterness. Carbonation seems a tad on the low, with a truly viscous mouthfeel. Nice DIPA, and exactly what you would expect from the style. Maybe just a touch to big and sweet for me, but good none the less.

A- Pours a light-golden yellow with a white fizzy head that is quick to dissipate. Looks decent but I prefer a darker golden amber with my ipas.
S- Not a very strong smell. Mostly hops, but not the overwhelming hop smell of most super-hopped ipas. possibly some citrus fruits.
T- Predictable from the look/smell. Hops everywhere up front and in the finish. Not a whole lot of complexity. Dry and bitter at the end with a grapefruit aftertaste.
M- maybe a little overcarbonated. medium bodied. not as smooth as you would like it to be.
D- I could definitely have more than one of these. It is easy to drink, and tastes fine, but is overall nothing too special.

here comes another quick cocktail nappy review
-a cloudy dark yellow brown
-kinda smells like a foot that was soaking in some kind of citrus. aka...not great
-not a ton of hops for a double, although it is pretty good. the bitterness gains some ground from start to finish which is like
-good enough
-not too drinkable for me. i was hoping for a bit more from this fella. gonna say i was a little disapointed

A) Pours with a creamy, big bubble head. Lacing is the same and slightly sticky. Hazy. Visible upward CO2. Gold in color.
S) Hoppy citrus - orange and pineapple. Earthy. Malty sweetness lingers just below the surface.
T) Caramel. Banana. Orange. Midway through the hops kick in but not overpowering. Hops and alcohol lingering in the aftertaste.
M) Gritty. Slightly syrupy. Alcohol effervescence. Fizzy. Light tannin feel.
D) Decent. I was hoping to be "wow'd" but not - oh well.

poured from 12oz bottle into a tulip.
nice, light yellow pour, but even with an aggressive pour, a disappointing head - fades to a 1" wisp in the middle with nominal lacing.
pretty good nose - well-rounded hop profile, spicy, a little peppery. understated maltiness.
taste - sharp piney hop blast, not a ton of malt, but what's there drifts towards the sweet side. clean dry finish. mouthfeel is more than adequate, but the lack of carbonation was distracting.
overall, it's a reasonable IIPA, but i'm not sure how this rates to an A-??? i think the fact that it's 'FOUNDERS!!!' might be leading to a bit of grade inflation. blind taste test with other B rated IIPA, i think it finishes middle-of-the-pack.

I found this to be a raw, brutalist cold-cock of hops. To some, certainly this is a compliment, and sometimes I mean it that way, but in this case, I found it crossed my flinch line. The only really standout part of this beer was the mouthfeel. Founders always nails body and carbonation just right. Only a dyed-in-the-wool hop maniac would love this beer. As for me, I merely liked it.

a creepy, and boy, I mean really creepy label on this one.
hazy bright yellow color of the beer and it poured a grand white head which has a good lacing on the glass.
very hoppy scent interlaced with citrus, orange and lemon. clean and almost a bit sweet smelling. floral as well.
the flavor is very hoppy initially. slight sourness comes in through the end. grainy and yeasty in between. a bit heavy on the hop aftertaste.
dry feel. the carbonation pops prominently.
a balanced beer, but nothing extraordinary here. good, not great flavors and the intangibles are meh.

Poured into a snifter glass:
Appearance: Pours a hazy orange yellow color with 1 finger of honey comb colored head. Lots of honeycomb like bubbles left to a film after about a minute.
Smell: Smells very very toffee, piney, slight grapefruit and lots of mandarin orange like flavors comming through.
Taste: Tastes a tad thin, not up my alley on this one. sort of a caramalized brown sugar meets old mango fruit with some bitter grapefruit pith. Intense flavor and offbalaced approach to my palate.
Mouthfeel: A bit thin and undercarbonated for me. big flavors dissapear due to the lack of viscosity on this one.
Drinkability: To me, this isnt a great example of the style but it is good, not great. I think they come in 4 packs. this was a single and it might have been out of date so i cant only rely on this one tasting to make my final judgement. Nice package though.

Founders Double trouble pours a thin white head which dissipates, but stays throughout due to lots of carbonation. Color is fairly light for an IPA with a little cloudiness. Strong hop aroma dominated by grapefruit w/a pinch of sweetness. Taste follows up the smell and is strongly bitter, somewhat covering up the 9.4% alcohol content. Mouthfeel is substantially thick and foamy. For an imperial IPA, quite drinkable, which means average vs. most beers. That's fine, because one is like two on alcohol content.
I prefer IPA to Imperial IPA, and Founders Centennial is, in my opinion, a better beer. This beer is, however, a fine representative of it's category.

A: Looks great, light colored IIPA with little head retention.
S: Strong hop aromas that you remember long after the brew is gone.
T: Hoptastic at first taste, but then bam... intense bitterness follows. Maybe my palate just isn't used to the bitter aftertaste, but smooth it was not. Luckily there is a good amount of malt padding to keep this drinkable.
M: Smooth and lightly carbonated, feel good feeling.
D: One then that's it... This is a big hopped up beer that deserves more respect than trying to drink more than one in a sitting.

Everything about this beer has an in-your-face style. Nice color with a decent head. The smell is all about grapefruit. If you want to teach someone how beer can smell like something other than "beer" then this is one great example. The taste borders on too bitter with the grapefruit/grapefruit pith being the strongest flavor. I dont think it would be too much for IPA lovers but those who dont care for the style will probably not enjoy this selection.

In the mood for hops, hopefully this will do the trick.
Appearance: Poured from the bottle into my Short's glass, this beer is a cloudy, yellowy-gold color. Despite a rough pour, there's not a lot of head going on...maybe a half inch worth of bone white, soapy foam.
Smell: Not quite the hop bomb I was hoping for. Not much in the way of hops at all. Bottled on date is December, 2010...after three months we got ourselves some serious hop fade I guess.
Taste: Well, the hops are a bit more pronounced here...but not by too much. The hops take on a sweet citrus sort of quality, but it's tough to pick it out given the maltiness of the brew.
Mouthfeel: Nice medium body, good carbonation. There's a bit of a resiny sort of quality to it, but nothing that detracts from the beer.
Overall (Drinkability): I'm torn with this beer. It's three months old, and while age certainly accounts for the hops fading I'm having a tough time rationalizing this much fade. What flavor I can pick up is good, so I really want to try this brew when it's fresh. So, with that said...Founder's has not yet disappointed me with any of their brews, so I will absolutely seek this one out again to get me some fresh hoppy goodness. I will, of course, update my review to reflect a fresher brew.
