Poured on tap at the Roadhouse in Brookline, MA. Very nice orange/copper color with an unusually creamy head for a DIPA. Lots of lacing. The smell was beautiful citrus, as was the taste - more grapefruit than orange. Very, very flavorful, not not so intense that I couldn't have a few. If you're not into this style then stay away!

Presentation: Poured from a stubby 12 oz brown bottle into an Imperial pint glass. Label depicts a "double" face; what looks like an old man one way and and old women upside down. 9.4 % ABV and 86 IBU's. No freshness date, but I picked it up a few weeks ago and have stored it in the refrigerator since.
Appearance: Pours with 1 1/2 fingers of nearly white head. This settles somewhat, leaving behind thick and complete lacing. The beer itself is an orange amber with a slight haze. Some sediment in the bottle.
Smell: Strong hop aroma of grapefruit and pine.
Taste: Wow, the closest to actual grapefruit that I have ever tasted in a beer! I wouldn't be surprised if someone later told me that this was a beer/grapefruit juice mix. Sharp bitterness in the finish, lingers long after the sip. Slight honey sweetness also hides in the finish.
Mouthfeel: Average carbonation level. Body is incredible, the beer is thick and almost syrupy.
Drinkability: Another hyped beer that lives up to its reputation. While I am more of a malt guy, it is hard to argue with the near perfection of this one.

I was at a great little pizza place in DC that had this beer on tap as their "seasonal beer", after sampling it, I ordered it. They served it in a fab (huge) red wine glass. The aroma was clean and grassy but not as grassy as the Plinys. The mouthfeel and taste was smooth and amazingly drinkable, counting that this beer is 9.5% and it drank like a 5% beer. We don't get a lot of Founders down in FL (well not any) so I was super excited to find this, and enjoyed it very much with my lunch. I have enjoyed almost every Founders beer that I have come across in my beer travels and I am going to be very sad that I am not going to be finding any Double Trouble in Florida.

Pours a syrupy looking coppery color. About a 1 finger head maybe less with a little lacing.
Really smells like grapefruit, honestly. Grapefruit hops. I really feel like i want to smoke this beer, lol.
Tastes aAAAAMAZING!!! Grapefruit and subtle pine with a bitter hop finish. One of the best IPA's ive ever had.
Great mouthfeel, perfect carbonation for an excellent IPA.
WOW!! This is one of the best IPA's ive ever had. It all starts with the smell - grapefruit hops, hmmmm. And the taste is the same, I love it, thank you founders for finally coming to NY, i love you, gnite.

This amazing American Double IPA is ridiculously easy to drink (a little TOO easy).
I had the privilege of having one or two (or more...) of these at General Denver in Wilmington, Ohio. Poured with about a 1-2 finger head in a normal pint glass. It was a lovely light apricot color, and it was very clear.
The aroma was very citrusy with a good deal of grapefruit. The head remained until about halfway through the pint, and it had a good amount of lacing in the glass.
The flavor was exceptional. It has a wonderful kick of bitterness from the hops, as well as a lot of flavor given off by them. It tasted a lot like grapefruit and other citrus fruits with a really nice sweet finish.
This is probably one of my favorite beers at the moment. It's seasonal, you can only get it Jan - April so when you see it, grab it! Truly excellent stuff, a GREAT beer!

Pours a brilliantly vibrant golden hue with deep orange edges. A finger of bright white head resides on the the top of the glass. Super sticky looking with great lacing. Smells of pure hop heaven. Oily hops invade the nostrils. Huge tropical hop nose with lots of grape fruit, orange, peel, citrus, and a touch of mango. Bright apricots come through as the beer airs a bit along with ripe pineapple. The head fades a bit and it's time to drink!
Creamy and delicious smooth with a mild body. Pungent and tangy grapefruit on the middle of the palette. Starts with a sticky sweetness and follows up with a fruity intensity. Extreme hop bitterness dances along the back of the tongue and fades away leaving a tropical paradise of flavor on the tongue. Minute amounts of alcohol makes its presence known and adds to the balance of this beautiful brew.
Purely a hop bomb. The pale malt adds nothing but a stable body intended to hold together the well blended flavor of delicious hops. Incredibly complex and dangerously drinkable.
Truly a winner and a contender for my favorite beer of all time.

Outstanding IPA. Grapefruit nose. Awesome. And when it first hits your taste buds, you get that grapefruit. Then the explosion of hops. When compared to any other IPA (my favorite class of beers) this one simply is hard to beat. My favorite Founder's Brew hands down.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a DFH modified Tulip.
Pours a hazy copper/orange with about an inch of white foam.
The nose is the first indication that this is a solid brew, sweet citrus with a strong hop presence...by now my mouth is watering...time to drink!
Double Trouble absolutely showcases what I love about Double IPAs , strong bold flavor! I get notes of pineapple , grapefruit and oranges, layered with a perfect balance of hop bitterness. The 9.4 abv is hidden well.
Mouthfeel is perfect carbonation, a juicy resinous feel with the finish of dry bitterness, as if you licked an aspirin.(sounds weird, but best description I could think of...I like it!)
Overall, this is easily one of my favorite beers. The 2013 release blew previous years away in my opinion. Up beside over DIPAs, DT stands strong! I'm thinking that 9.4 abv is the magic number, I like this as much as Stone's Enjoy by and Great lakes Alchemy hour...both also 9.4.
Hats off to Founders, great brew!

A: Poors well with a light amber color to straw color and a whit head. Last couple drops run around on the top from the oil surface tension before incorporating themselves into the beer. Love it. Little cloudy. with is why I gave it 4.5 instead of 5. Leaves no lace as it is drank.
S: grapefruit, grapefruit, grapefruit. Very floral. Huge aroma of hope and citrus. Slighty piney.
T: Nice and bitter but supported by the body. Not much malt, but still carries the hops well. Alcohol is pronouced well.
M: Light in body at the start finishes large and oily. Love it.
O: World class beer one of the best DIPA I have ever had.

Appearance a little cloudy goldy, i was hoping for a slightly darker brew for the ABV. the only reason i gave it a 4.5
Smell definitely hopy, grape-fruity, citrus y, a hint of boozyness
Taste just your classic double IPA, the difference between this and others is you can taste the quality, I taste the hops right off the bat. goes down smooth. I best describe it by saying it taste like grapefruit. yummy.. would never guess this has a high ABV..
Mouthfeel smooth, a little bubbly,
Overall an amazing brew, will drink again, will reccomend, in fact Im getting up to grab a cold one now.

12 oz. bottle purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, 2013 vintage but unclear bottling date, poured into a DFH quasi-IPA glass, drank two bottles on 4/26-7/13 over several hours.
A: 5 - straw golden-yellow coloration, impressive clarity (can both see or read through), minimal white head dissipates into subtle glass lacing with moderate middle residuals, medium alcohol legs
S: 5 - wow, hop bomb...lots of grapefruit, grapefruit and more grapefruit...also picking up some onion and garlic notes --> perfect smelling imperial IPA for me
T: 5 - on the front of the tongue, it's what you'd expect from the aroma with a big hop presence but not overly bitter, super drying and, even though it's sloughing off my taste buds, I could definitely drink this all day (move over All Day IPA)
M: 4.75 - full-bodied, 9.4% is hidden by the hops; moderate-to-large carbonation and alcohol legs
O: 5 - again, wow! I have never had this imperial IPA before but it hits all the high notes for me: huge grapefruit and onion/garlic aroma, slap of bitterness on the anterior tongue and super dry; this is definitely going into my top 5 DIPAs and the only beer that comes to mind that can compete is Surly Abrasive --> I need a side-by-side comparison pronto; anyway, buy, trade, sell your wares on the street to get this beer if you love hop-forward imperial IPAs!

Pours from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Emerges slightly hazy due to the beer being unfiltered. Bronze golden in color which tells me I am going to enjoy this one. The color shows a lack of caramel color, therefore, a lack of caramel flavor (which I like in DIAP). Small white head leaves minimal lacing.
Aroma is very grapefruity, grassy, and quite piney as well. Loads of overall citrus with minimal malt aromas.
Awesome flavor and exactly what a DIPA should be like. Slight sweetness immediately, then leaves immediately, with some more bitterness up front and more in the back. Loads of grapefruit with the grass being a little more subdued in flavor as compared to aroma. Bitter but in no way out of balance. Absolutely perfect.
Perhaps a touch thin for most but I really like the thinness. Without the chewy maltiness, this is one perfect DIPA. Perhaps this and Pliny the Elder are tops in my book. Wonderful.

When did beer get so expensive? At $12 for a 4 pack, it's a bit pricey. But given the 9.4% alcohol in the end it's worth it. Visually it is cloudy and the color is a pale amber. The head is very creamy with good lacing. The aroma is very strong. Lots of grapefruit and bread. The bitterness kicks in early and stays throughout. Under it is plenty of grapefruit and orange. A slight banana flavor. And the hops definitely spice it up. The alcohol is very "round" and helps mellow it a bit. Flavor and bitterness. Really a terrific double IPA.

bottled 1/28/10
pours bright golden with a orange tinge - with an agressive pour left a 2 finger white head with spotted lacing left all down the glass
smells of citris pineapple grapefruit and small amount of bready malt
taste - do you love hops? i do and love this - big tropical flavors and a honey malt sweetness. - this dipa holds up so much better then hopslam (which i love) but the nod goes to DT(not close)
mouthfeel is perfect with this high abv beer some how they keep a dipa light with strong citris hop flavors with a creamy finish.
overall this beer lives up to its name double trouble or hell a triple threat or a five tool beer it has the looks, smell, taste, mouthfeel, and drinkability. def. an All-Star DIPA

Does Founders make a bad beer? Not to my knowledge. Had a sample of this on-tap last night (didn't take notes, but it was delicious), so I had to pick up two 4-packs today.
Poured from a bottle into a Sierra Nevada pint glass. Not too much head, but underneath is a nice copper/light orange. While I prefer an unfiltered IPA, this is a lovely, well done beer that leaves lacing all the way down the glass.
The dominant aromas are of pine and citrus hops that are less strong than the large, outstanding flavor. The pineapple and grapefruit hops jump all over your taste buds and demand attention right from the very first sip, a real hop monster that compares very well to Hop Slam. The bitterness is there, but not overpowering by any means. There's a balancing sweetness from something that I swear tastes like honey, reminiscent of Hop Slam again. The alcohol is totally hidden. Amazing!
On the palate, it's medium and not the slightest bit watery with just enough carbonation to keep things refreshing. It makes you forget how much alcohol you're taking in. This is my second one in a row and if it wasn't past my bedtime I'd down another in a heartbeat. Very drinkable for such a high gravity, super hoppy beer.
Hop heads, take notice and don't let this year's Double Trouble disappear without at least one or two. Perhaps even better than this year's Hop Slam!
Update 04/01/2011 - No April fools: this is the best all around beer I've ever had. I'm on my second case and I hope to find another before they're gone for the year.

12oz poured into a stange. Bottled 01/27/09 stamped on neck.
Appearance - Cloudy yellow-orange body with 2 finger white head.
Smell - Grassy hop. Banana malt undercurrent. Great balance. definitely two-faced beer. If you focus on the malt, you smell only malt. If you focus on the hop, it's strongly flowery. Strong and balanced on both fronts.
Taste - kick of hop, alcohol in the front. Malt throughout. Finish is malty and hoppy between alternate sips.
Mouthfeel - Medium-full bodied.
Overall Drinkability - Perfect balance. Tug of war.

This has a pleasant grassy aroma, and pours a hazy golden color with a head that dissipates quickly. There is a sweet attack of ruby grapefruit and pineapple, with a long bitter finish. The hops are aggressive and provide plenty of bitterness. This beer isn't balanced - and that's a good thing. Certainly one for hop heads - I enjoyed this a lot.

Saw this one sitting on the shelf at the local beer store... I quickly scooped it up because I love Founders and anything Michigan I can find now that I'm stuck in central IL aka the beer void of America. Cool looking label also. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, beer is a deep cloudy yellow color with a slight orange tinge and a HUGE frothy head that sticks around all day. The smell is a huge hit of hops; spicey, citrusy, piney and resinous. There is also a sweet malty backdrop that complements the hops nicely. No solventy alcohol smells. That is one excellent smelling DIPA. The taste only confirms what I thought about the smell, hop bomb but not in an overly bitter, mouth puckering way. All the flavor is there but it lacks that sharp bitterness that turns some people off from huge hoppy beers like this one. The citrusy, piney hops are nicely balanced with a solid backing of slightly sweet maltiness. There is only a hint of alcohol in the finish in a warming characteristic but I would never guess this rings in at 9.4%. The mouthfeel is full bodied and has a velvety smooth carbonation, almost like a nitro tap. Drinkability, considering the high ABV and IBUs is huge. I would drink this all the time if that was an option. I really like Founders in general, but I think this may be my new favorite. Spectacular beer, if you can get your hands on it... buy it!!

A - pours a nice golden yellow with three fingers of bubbly ivory head with nice retention and lace.
S - Beautiful IPA smells with candied grapefruit and pine. Not really any malt detectable, but that's quite alright. Mango in here too. I'm excited.
T - Wow, for 86 IBU there is way more hop flavor than bitterness. Right up front with some tropical fruit followed by some pine and bitterness rounding it out. A hint of malt adds some nice sweetness in here, right before the bitterness bites.
M - Nice and sticky, mouth coating, thick, good carbonation. A nice mouthfeel.
D - Drinks exceptionally well. Forgive my blasphemy, but this may even be better than HopSlam. Utterly delicious and goes down very well.

Wow, I expected the hop kick but I was really surprised by the fruity snap on this one. Another great breakfast/buffet beer. Color was cloudy, bouquet was very hoppy without a hint of the grapefruity kick that was to come on the first sip. Good for breakfast or a hot summer day.

Unbelievable, just drank back to back with PTE, Green Flash Imperial, Dark Horse Double crooked Tree, New Holland Mad Hatter Imperial, and Bells Hopslam and all four of us preferred the founders, especially for the price.
Great Aroma, Mouthfeel and taste. I wish this was a beer that easily cloneable.

Very impressed with this, especially compared to Hopslam. It amazingly manages to have a smooth, easy drinking flavor while maintaining an extremely pleasant hop aroma and high alcohol.
Color, flavor, etc... were flawless and multiple servings could be enjoyed in an evening - this can't be said about many other DIPAs on the market.

One of the best Double IPA's I've had. I've had Pliny the Elder and I would have to say this is 1 step behind that. Was able to track down a case of this and fridge is stocked.
Founders continues to make some of the best beer. Am looking forward to trying the KBS.
