Pours a copper-orange color with a small head that leaves minimal lacing. The first whiff hits with a load of caramel toasted malts, a touch of vanilla, and an abundance of alcohol. A touch of fruity flavors are hinted at, but not very noticeable. The alcohol gets stronger and stronger as the beer gets warmer, until eventually it's almost the only thing you notice, along with the malts. For a "triple IPA", it's weird how much the malts and alcohol overpower the actual hop smell. Hops are present, but not at all in the foreground.

The taste... well, I don't understand how so many people have given this beer a good review. I guess that's just the difference in tastes. But this beer was bleh. Hoppy and bitter, with overpowering malts, and extremely annoying alcoholic properties. Way too boozy. And not boozy in a "oak barrel aged bourbon" kind of way - boozy in a "this is difficult to drink" kind of way. It's as if the alcohol is there unnecessarily. It's unwarranted, unwanted, and uncalled for in this amount. I feel like Founder's was strictly going for the novelty of 12% ABV without much regard to the actual taste, which is a shame because most of their brews are amazing. This beer left a sharp bite on the back of the throat and the booze only got stronger and more arrogant as time went on. Super thick and left the mouth feeling sticky and coated. Pungent, heavily alcoholic aftertaste.

Yuck. I was very disappointed with this. Founder's puts out amazing stuff, but this just missed the mark. Instead of an incredibly complex, hoppy brew, I was sucking on a hodge-podge of malts, unwanted bitterness, and overpowering alcohol burn. I'll definitely be passing this one up next time.

Ap- pours a copper/amber color with a thin white head that has ok retention.

Ar- the normal hoppy characteristics with a lot of booze and some biscuity malts.

T- not as floral as I thought it would be, seems the flavors are a bit muted, maybe from the booze-y undertones. has a good malt backbone for a TIPA. Nothing really stands out though I feel like the alcohol is hiding some of the fruity/floral characteristics I look for in a strong IPA.

M- sticky, and medium bodied. really warms the mouth on the hold. good carbonation for the style.

O- a good beer, but a strong beer too. This may be the limit for an IPA. Starting to lose some of the flavors a typical IPA should have in place of boozey flavor. Glad I tried it though!

When i poured this beer, it has a nice reddish copper color body with no head to it. The smell is bursting with hop bitterness and some citrus. The taste is like wow, nice and bitter up front from the hops and then a little malt on the back of the tongue. It even gets nicer as it sits and warms up. The mouthfeel is very nice, kinda heavy, its not a sipping beer but its not a chug it down either, its somewhere in between. It leaves a nice stickyness on the tongue also. Overall a really good DIPA.

A- Clear Ruby amber with a nice lacy head.

S- Mild hoppy smell. Not what I was expecting for something that was dry hopped for so long. You name the hop characteristic and it's there though. Carmel notes in there too, probably from the crystal malt though and not hops.

T Smooth, bitter, and malty. Big bitter taste that fills the mouth with a wonderful hoppy flavor.

M- You need a fork and knife to eat this. Thick thick thick.

O- Man, what a wonderful triple APA. You can tell that a lot of work went into this and it was done very well.

bottled on 05/25/12

A: Began the poured slowly but became much more aggressive in order to create a head. A light tan head formed and then lasted only a few moments. The brew is a copper color with a red hue. It is also semi-translucent and does not appear cloudy.

S: The aroma is sweet grapefruit, and just a touch of pine and earthiness comes through, too.
T: The taste is very floral with some earthiness and a solid bitterness that turns to pepperiness in character. There is also some sweet caramel malt that blends with the bitterness and provides just enough balance to keep the bitterness and pepperiness from going too far. And, although the alcohol is well hidden there is just a little alcohol heat that compliments and focuses the bitterness.

M: The body is fairly heavy and satisfying; and, there is very little carbonation, which fits this beer well.

O: This beer has a bold hops bitterness that makes it truly unique. The malt sweetness is an underlying flavor that provides more to the complexity than balance. It has a pleasant floral flavor along with the raw, unbridled peppery bitterness that is the focus of this beer. The bitterness is sure to please hopheads.

God Bless you alefish!!! This was a beautiful extra.

Pours a rubenesque red/amber. Rigorous pour yields a rich 1 inch of frothy head that seems dense but soon reduces to a delicate lace.

Some people are critical of this category of beer. They prefer straight ahead hops. F 'em!!! This is a graceful style. And this one is soooo good. The aroma gives a lot of hints. Biscuity maly, a hint of caramel, brandy, maybe even a hint of aged Jamaican rum. Overall a sweetness, with hints of booze graced by a slight dry hoppy hint.

The maltiness is gently sweet, invitingly so. But it is immediately followed by a subtle scrum between the hops and a dry, slightly peaty rum barrel flavor. Then moves toward a biscuit malt, and back to something in the rum realm. A piney, oily resin lingers like a hot, drunk ex-girlfriend that wants one more round for old times sake. Sorry, that was too much poetic license. But this one is warm without too much alcohol heat. And that's a good balancing act for a 12% TIPA.

The finish is nice and slightly sticky on the tongue. Again, lack of burn is a nice surprise. Very smooth.

Overall: Anybody want to put this one in as an extra, please trade with me. I really enjoyed this one, and hope to have many more chances to try it again...and again.

Purchased locally from Groppi's for $5.99/12 oz. bottle. Ouch!!

The beer was advertised as a triple IPA. To me, this style doesn't work. The hops were there but the malt and overall taste was reminiscent of a blond, not-well-made, barleywine. Personally, for the cost, I would saver your money and buy Bigfoot or something similar if you're looking for a hoppier, high-alcohol beer.

Ok, my first review. (because I just noticed that option was now available to me)
I was pretty excited to see this on the shelf at a local "specialty market" and was ok with paying $18.99 for a 4 pack to try it. ... the packaging says "This one can age with the best of them"... I think I'll just do that with the other three.

A: Nice looking beer. Red/Deep Amber color. Does have some thin lacing.
S: Dissapointing; "dry hopped with a combination of 10 hop varieties" ... I was expecting a punch in the snout; didn't get it. (disclaimer: I've been off the cigarettes again for just two days, so maybe I missed it).
T: Well .. it's gets "easier" as you work your way through it. The high alcohol definitely comes out. It really pushes the hops aside. Too much alcohol for sure; perhaps any IPA is better just better in that 6-8% range? I feel like I'm getting confused in this; too much going on.
M: Nice, it is a little thick on the tongue, but it's smooth after you settle into it with a few sips.
Overall: Kind of a let down really. Since I started the "hobby" a year ago, I've really enjoyed the citrus, pine, earthy notes and complex caramel, nutty malts that I find in the IPAs; this one just seems way over the top to me. Perhaps I'm just too "young" in my experience to appreciate. I'll let the others age for a while and try it again.

Snifter pour at the brewery.

Appearance - ochre. Not unexpected.

Smell - very plain, I was thrilled when this was announced on tap and was let down by this aspect especially. And out of a snifter!

Taste - not bad, not bad at all for a strong double.

Mouthfeel - strong. I like Double Trouble because it hides its alcohol well. Don't expect the same from this release.

Overall - meh. Spend less money and go for Double Trouble.

Appearance is rich, caramel red with light head and not much lacing.

Nose is thick malt, caramel, with some black cherry and anise.

Taste is a malt bomb. Hops are high, but right below the surface. Black cherry & charred oak.

Mouthfeel is biting. Sipper for sure.

Overall, flavor isn't especially memorable, but it is true to style for what they call a triple IPA.

Served on tap at Summit's Wayside Tavern August 31, 2012. Reviewed from notes.

(Appearance) Clear sunset orange with a light head. Relaxed carbonation. Good. 4

(Smell) light caramel, mild citrus hops. Clean aroma, light potency. 3.5

(Taste) Heavy caramel sweetness, mild clean citrus and floral bitter hops, heavy booze laden finish, Long lasting slick bitterness. Not bad but certainly could have toned down on the alcohol potency quite a bit for a more enjoyable drink. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) very smooth, slick, a bit syrupy thick in texture. Alcohol presence is medium-high. Body is medium. Good, a bit heavy on the alcohol and ultimately more sweet than bitter. 3.5

(Overall) One may find it hard to enjoy Devil Dancer based on the heavy booze flavors and slick sweetness of the malt bill but it's probably worth seeking out at least once. 4

We pour a thick and syrupy looking beer, glowing the color of bright pumpkin-orange. It holds a two finger head of tight yet creamy off-white bubbles. This shows nice retention, leaving uneven sheets of lacing around the glass. The head is easily reproducible with a quick swirl. There is a thick haze to the beer, with no sediment noted. Carbonation appears quite mild. The aroma shows a thick malty base. There is bright caramel, musk, and big buttery diacetyls. The latter gives a woody quality to the nose, leaving room for a nice boozy backing. The hops are relatively mild, but show prominent grass and light citrus. Our first impression is that the flavoring is nice, and there are big malts, but the booze is way big. As we sip, warm caramel malts, walnut sweetness, buttery diacetyls, musk, and wood, all as in the nose, appear. The booze is noticeable even at the front, giving fusel air and stinging bite to each sip. The peak is more mild and sweet, with more butter and caramel, and some black cherry and plum to mix. These juxtapose over that peppery booze nicely, with some resiny hop oils and hot pine to bring us to the finish. The end is otherwise characterized by a fusel boozy wash, with caramel, citric hops red cherries, fresh woodiness, mustard seed, and black pepper. The aftertaste breathes most bitterly of the citric, piney, and soapy hops, booze, pepper, more of the nuttiness from the start, sesame seed, and paler malts. The body is full and syrupy, and the carbonation is medium. While the brew is thick and sweet, it lacks that utter stickiness to the lips that you get with many barleywines, for example. It remains soft, with nice slurp, cream, and froth. The mouth is coated but quickly dried with boozy astringency. The abv is big, warming, biting, and puckering, but the drinkability remains fair.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the aroma. The malt backing was huge!! There was such a full, potent quality, with sweetness of caramel and pales, while adding buttery character, spice, and wood. This helped to hold up against the monstrous booziness. The hops were a bit subdued, but retained enough vigor to keep this classifiable as a DIPA. This is a strong tasty brew, and certainly not a surprise from Founders.

Thanks to millerbuffoon for this one! Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into CCB pint glass.

A: Deep copper, a bit hazy and minimal visible carbonation. Forms only a thin white head.

S: Caramel, boozy, and a touch of pine hops.

T: Caramel, booze, some fruity sweetness that strikes me as apple in character and leaves me with an overall impression of drinking an alcoholic caramel apple. A touch of pine hop bitterness too, but it's relatively faint.

M: Medium body, low carbonation. This is certainly boozy; however, I'll say that it is almost well-hidden considering the high ABV.

O: Not a bad "triple IPA". Better flavors than others I've had, but still not something I'd sit down & drink often.

Bottle date just wiped off- it was some time in June 2012.

Pours an orangey-amber colour. A fairly vigorous pour leaves only a small off-white head that fades to a few bubbles quickly.

Lots of hops in the nose. Pine is big, with some citrus. Also lots of caramel malt, and a fair bit of booze. Smells not unlike a hoppy barleywine. You can tell that this one is big, and that the taste will be intense.

Caramel malt flavours hit first, but there are a lot of pine resin flavoured hops around as well. Actually a lot of sweetness in the beer, despite the big hop presence. It is hard to call it balanced, because it seems to be intensely sweet and bitter at the same time, but it occupies a weird place on the spectrum. Aftertaste is very bitter. Quite boozy. Again, like a super hoppy barleywine. It's a bit of a mess, but the sort of mess that happens to appeal to me.

Full bodied, oily, moderate carbonation. A bit heavy.

Overall, as I said above, a mess of a beer but I actually like it. It is boozy and it is anything but subtle, but has its charms. Not something anybody would want too often.

A- Copper/red pour, slightly hazy with a soapy, sticky finger width off white head. Lacing is great.

S- Bright citrus of grapefruit and mandarin. There is a sweetness of strawberries and caramel. Slightly dank smelling (in a good way) with a touch of alcohol in the back.

T- Dank bitter hops. Floral and pine with a grapefruit finish. Slightly sweet, with very little alcohol in the finish.

Pours almost red, slight white head that dissipated quickly. Minimal lacing.

Smells like a floral combination of hops, malt and resin. Very strong smell. Alcohol odor is prevalent.

Tastes like the smell. Big hop bomb, with a sticky resin malt flavor. About as much IPA flavor as can be contained in a single bottle. Bitter but sweet.

Easy to drink, not highly carbonated but not so flat or thick that it's hard to get down.

Really a great beer that everyone needs to try once their taste buds are ready. This is really a complex beer, very hard to describe, and very strong. This beer needs to be treated with respect or the drinker will find himself in a world of hurt. Very enjoyable experience, but also a very serious taste that might not be acceptable to a large audience.

2012 release

A - Pours a darker shade of amber and it has some ruby highlights around the edges...the head was white and creamy and stood about two fingers...it retained very nicely and left some good lacing

S - The hops are strong in the nose providing resiny pine and a deep hop presence...the caramel malts are also strong and provide a lot of sweetness to the nose

T - Here's where the beer started to go downhill for me...the hops were strong, just like nose suggested, with a lot of resin but the caramel really worked its way through...the sweetness started to overpower any sort of hop flavor especially as the beer warmed...the bitterness was still there, but there was no hop flavor...the sweet caramel lasted through the finish

M - Medium bodied...syrupy, sticky, sweet, alcohol burn, lots of bitterness...just wasn't working for me

O - With the combination of sticky sweet and the alcohol burn, this one didn't work for me...I know some people enjoy this type of big IPA, but I like to taste the hops and prefer my IPA's on the hoppier side

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Central Waters tulip glass.

A: Clear amber color. Aggressive pour leads to a thin half-finger head. Lacing is almost non-existent but is present in a few spots around the glass. A big thicker head would have made this a prettier beer.

S: Big malts up front with a hop profile that you can tell is just waiting to do some damage on the palate. ABV is most definitely present here as well...also waiting to do some damage.

T: Follows the nose but adds the huge bitter notes that define the hops. Super sticky sweet with a super puckering bitterness that balances this one pretty well.

M: Big feel, big bitter finish. A touch undercarbonated.

O: A solid drinking BIG ABV beer. Easy drinking and nicely done. Not one I'll hurry to get but one I'll pick up a single and enjoy it slowly.

T- Big and hoppy up front. Grapefruit pith and a bit of sugar. I faint hint of pine as well. And then BAM! a big kick of alcohol.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter bottled on 6/18/12.

A: Pours a clear copper brown with a white head that lasts the glass as a ring around the edge. No real lacing.

S: Strong malt and hop aromas dominate the nose. Can tell this is going to be a strong brew. A sweet malt, and kind of a dank basementy smell.

T: Has a real bitter bite but its very malty so you really have to pick it out. Aftertaste has more of a clear hop taste to it. Definitely a boozy bite at the end.

M: A lighter than expected body, but still a sticky and resinous brew. Low carbonation. Very warming on the both the mouth and stomach.

Overall a damn strong IPA that has a lot more malt than I anticipated. The only way they can make such a bitter beer palatable is with a ton of malt.

Pours from the bottle a cloudy orangeish-red. Minimal head. Not a fantastic looking beer, but not bad either. The nose is surprisingly mild for this monster. I don't smell much - but here goes: citrus fruits, pine needles, and herbal notes. That's about all I get. The taste hits you hard - an assault after the subtle nose. It's like every hope variety in the world is included, and a sweet malty backbone attempts to balance it all. Bitter and sweet, but mostly bitter. Tastes of lemon, orange, grapefruit, pine resin, something almost medicinal, hot alcohols (fairly well covered under the bitterness), and caramel in the background. I'm reminded of an American Barleywine in the overall mouthfeel and taste. Top notch ale. Hence the price tag...

A- Pours a deep gold to amber color. Small, 1 finger head, that retains and laces very well. Lots of continuous carbonation rising.

S- Less hops than anticipated. Very sweet malts are more prominent. Hop scents are very fruity, with a slight tendency toward citrus.

T- Terrifically balanced. Bottled a couple months ago, but the hops character is still there, but almost equally balanced by a sweet malt bill. Hops reclaim some dominance about midway through the drink. Finishes very cleanly, with slight hop bite, but still some sweet malt. Gets a little hot as it warms up.

M- Smooth and adequately carbonated. Fairly sticky on the palate. Small amount of heat on the end from the alcohol, but not much for 12%.

Overall, a very solid beer that is very well balanced in my opinion. Boozey and malty for a so-called “triple IPA,” but more appealing to me than some overly hoppy DIPA’s. Gets me excited for my first taste of DFH 120.

My everyday liquor store sells this for $22.99 a four pack and I could never pull the trigger on one. But, I found another store that sold single bottles for $5.99... so I decided to give it a go.

A - Pours a nice, deep amber red color with minimal head. The color and the appearance was by far my favorite aspect of this beer. The "Devil Dancer" name fits it well.

S - The smell is of grapefruit and other citrus-y, sweet hop smells.

T - I was ready for a hop bomb... and although the hops are definitely there, they didn't hit me as hard as I expected. This beer is also a lot sweeter than I expected (I assume to balance the massive amount of hops) - but it tasted more like a hoppy barley wine to me. There was also some kind of funny aftertaste... kind of like onions? Overall, I was not that impressed, but glad that I got to taste this.

M - Very thick and viscous - almost like a barley wine. Chewy. It was not a bad mouth feel, but just not what I would prefer for the style.

O - To me this slightly resembled something like a DFH 120 min, but it falls very short. It is a huge, sticky, IPA that looks beautiful in the glass... but comes up a little short on taste.
