Shoreline is a decent brewery. The beer and food is good but the atmosphere of the place is not always the best. It is good when they have bands that play
They have deals on Mondays to fill up growlers for $8
What I love about Shoreline is their service. It is excellent. I have never had a problem with the service at all. Also, if you bring a growler in to be filled, they will take it from you and wash it for you while you sit and have a beer. I took the time to wash and sanitize my growler before I went because I had no idea they did that but I was very surprised and confused the first time I went in and the bartender took my growler away and took it in the back.

Driving up to ShoreLine through the streets of Michigan City is a bit of an experience. I came in from the east and was a little perturbed by the terrible condition of the roads, the lack of any real sort of town and the giant nuclear power plant looming just hundreds of yards away. Luckily, any fears were quickly abated by one awesome experience.
I really like the feel of ShoreLine. The interior is clean, crisp, made mostly of wood and not overly decorated. The bar is long and comfortable. There are a few televisions hanging in the corners - not enough to make it a viable option during football weekends or March Madness, but enough to see the big game. It's an old, stand-alone red brick building that has been reclaimed to make any kind of diner feel at home, which I appreciate.
Whatever "it" factor that the location lacks (and it does slightly), it is more than made up for by the beer and the food. The menu features a decent mix of pub entrees like fish and chips or pasta and sandwiches and burgers. But these aren't your normal deli sandwiches. Pulled pork, Cajun shrimp, crap cakes, falafel and avocado aioli are just a few of the things you can find featured on their creations. I had a Cajun shrimp wrap that wasn't overly spicy and definitely hit the spot. My favorite part of the experience, though, was the house-made vegetable chips. Besides the typical russet potatoes, they're slicing up yams and beets and frying them to perfection themselves. Yum!
The beer is also top quality with plenty of selections to choose from. From lighter lagers and English pale ales to imperial scotch ales and whopping 15% honey oatmeal stouts, none of their selections are light on flavor. The one detraction, in my opinion, was their IPA, which was a little bitter up front without much floral complexity as a payoff. But past that, all the beers were very good, with special recognition of their Big Bella heavy Scotch Ale, which was superb.
I was in a little past lunch time, so there wasn't a big crowd, but the girl behind the bar was pretty attentive. She had no problem helping me choose between dishes and took an active interest in which beers I was enjoying. All in all, a great find.

This place was a pleasant surprise. Contained within a dingy looking building inside is a renovated, friendly brewpub and all the charm of what it once was and still the amenities of a first class destination. I tried the sampler and their beers were very good but probably the Sum Nug was the best. I also tried some eggs covered in sausage that was fried... not probably very healthy but something different and it was very good. Beyond the great quality there was also a decent selection. I will go back here if given the chance, and perhaps find it even more appealing than the brewpub not that many miles to the southwest.

The food was good: we had a burger and they did do it rare as requested. The Scotch Egg was very good.
My wife and I are not lager fans, so we tried the ales, of course. We quickly switched to lager. The Russian Imperial was the one exception, which they wouldn't put into a growler due to abv. Either there's so much there the banana ester problem was covered over, or they used a lager yeast. I have seen that before, though not usual by any means.
The lagers did not have banana esters in them.
If these ales were wheat beers this might be a rave review. Banana esters are not unexpected in some wheat beers and can be part of the profile. But banana in an IPA? A Stout? A Scotch Ale? Eh, no. Seems they might need to get a new house yeast.
Could be too high fermentation temp, or not enough aeration, but I'm guessing it's a yeast problem. Why would more than one ale, and most of the ales, have a banana sense otherwise? Could be ferm temp off on all, but not as likely I would think.
I'd rather not get more specific: this could be a temporary problem. They do happen. Brewing may be a science, but yeast problems are always a risk. Might otherwise be great beer 99.9% of the time. So I didn't really dump on the brewpub, as I would have some I've known in the past that don't seem to care if there's a problem. From the other reviews, seems I may have just hit them during a problematic brew time.

I didn't have a hard time finding the place. The room is big. It almost feels too big, with all kinds of vertical space that's just wasted. The paneling on the walls is kind of obnoxious, but the brick that's exposed is pretty nice.
There were about ten beers on tap, and two that were out. Unfortunately the two that were out, the English IPA and their Oatmeal stout, were two of the ones we wanted to try out. Instead I ended up with their Scottish ale, okay but a bit thin, and their American wheat, which was really good, almost Gumballheadish. She had the American pale and American IPA, preferring by a large margin the pale.
For food I had a Scotch egg and buffalo calamari, which were both really good. A couple next to us asked what I was eating and they ordered the same thing. Always nice to be able to talk to your temporary neighbors.
Our server was excellent and let us try all kinds of stuff, had good recommendations, and was prompt but unobtrusive. I'll be going back once their barrel-aged series comes out to try some of that, and hopefully we'll get a few more beers that match my interests next time.

For my whole adult life, if I wanted to got a brewpub, it was Bell's Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where I lived. I had to move away from that wonderful place, although I do get back several times a year. Fortunately for me, Shoreline is just 5 minutes from my work. More restaurant than Bells was, but still a nice, homey atmosphere. The bar is a wall of private, hand-blown mugs that be purchased and kept there (or taken home). The beers are good. the kids chicken tenders are made with Panko bread crumbs and are very good. The calamari is excellent. The pretzels are a treat. Service is always very good and if you ask, you can purchase some of their 750ml bottles of barrel-aged beer. My favorite of those is "3 Sum". It is an Imperial IPA and it absolutely rocks. I am going to add it to their list tonight. When they have bands on Saturday night, the place gets really cranking. I love to bring my family for appetizers or dinner and to bring my friends for good bar time.

My new favorite brewpub now that Flossmoor Station is on a downward spiral of late.
Spending quality time here today. Sure Michigan City is a little wanting, but this place is terrific. Big, old building that looks like a cabin, or a barn in which one would participate in the local sock hop.
Had the thistle sticks and also had some buffalo calamari which was worth the trip by itself. For lunch, tried their SSLT, which is a salmon BLT on marble rye. The wife had a burger with bacon on a pretzel roll which was outstanding.
They had about 13 of their beers on tap, the 6 of which I had were great (our server was awesome and had no problem fetching me as many samples as I wanted). These included Discombobulation barleywine, Sum Nug IPA which was hoppy as heck! Big Bella wee heavy, BA Froggy Loggy lager which had some sour notes from the barrel and a sampler of BA Lost Sailor, their 2007 Imperial Stout, which is among the best BA stouts I've ever had (had some at Great Taste in August as well). You can still buy bottles ($20/ea. 750cl) of their barrel aged series. There are 8 different offerings. I'm taking home two Lost Sailor's on the real. They do growler fills as well.
Bathrooms: They have 'em... didn't use 'em.

I've been to Shoreline 3 or 4 times this past year and it's starting to grow on me. The building is really cool, it's close to the beach so there's a good place to go at the end of those hot summer days. They have good fish 'n' chips but the portions are a little small and overpriced. They do taste good though. They seem to always have a good selection of their own brews on tap. I've seen people order mixed drinks, wine and even (gasp!) Bud Light. I can't comment on those, but their beer is certainly above average. Cheap too; only about $4 a piece. Service is a little slow, but that's pretty typical for a place like this. It's all part of the vibe. They have live music too which is always cool. Usually on Fridays. All in all, worth the drive out there from time to time. I live in Hammond so it's about 45 minutes for me. I would probably be there much more often if I weren't 5 minutes away from the best brewpub ever (Three Floyds in Munster).

Ok this is a little bit unfair since Jim used to be an employee of mine. Anyways, I have been here a couple of times and after tonight I figure I will review it. Nice big open area when you first walk in. Good view of the brewery from behind the bar. The bartender was friendly and was quick to ask if I needed another beer after I was about done with mine. Looking around I noticed that the waiters/waitresses were quick and people didn't have to wait to get things they wanted. I still have not had food when I have been here which next time I will. Nice selection on beers to have here. There is not just a couple of different styles but many and I think there were about 8-10 tap handles here. There are a couple of different BA beers that are for sale. I'm not sure about other selections. Overall this is a fantastic brewery that people might overlook in the area but they shouldn't. The beers are above average and should be in a league above "local" brewery.

I've been intending to try out this place for years, but just never made it over here. Now that I finally have, I'm impressed and wish I had done so sooner. Didn't eat here, and only had time for one beer. I chose their Scottish ale, and I'm not sure that it could have been improved upon. Menu looked delicious and extensive, ambiance was good, cool artisan glass mugs, nice woodwork, nice view of the brewery, good service, good location, everything was nice. I like their train theme, too.
Sitting at the bar with other customers was very pleasant until an employee, who may have been a brewer, started washing glasses and talking really loudly and pointlessly right in front of us, and kept giving us these looks of death. Not sure what his problem was. Next time we'll grab a table.
