Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Pours light gold, minuscule foam. Hazy. Honey nose, with hints of rye. But more of the sweetness. Smooth taste. Opens sweet with honey and closes that way too. Barely get a touch of bitter in the middle. Low carbonation in the mouthfeel. An ok brew, certainly too light on the signature rye flavor.

Straw- colored and approachable, Salmon Fly Honey Rye starts off with a nose that features honey, apple, and light floral hops. The foam level on this beer is minimal and doesn’t last for long.

This beer offers a taste that emphasizes the flavor of honey, light pale malt, some light apple and biscuits, light rye, and mild spice. The body of the beer is medium to light and it finishes with a slight bitterness that switches back to the taste of sweet honey and pale malt.

Salmon Fly Honey Rye is a little disappointing in some ways. Not only is the body lighter than I prefer, but the contributions from the rye are minimal. In fact, if rye were not on the label, I may not even realize I was drinking a rye- enhanced beer. With rye in the name, I expect a greater presence of rye, but it just isn’t happening here.

This isn’t a bad beer, but it may disappoint some who try it and expect something different/better. I find it okay, but other than drinking it on a hot day by the pool, I am not so sure I would buy this beer again.

a clean golden color pour with a slight amount of white foam around the rim of the glass. smells of honey, bready malt, yeast. a slight bitterness up front, a tiny bit of rye next, then straight to a bready backbone. there's a sort of acidic trace in the aftertaste. medium to light body with low carbonation.

this is not that great of a beer overall, but is decent enough for a session ale on hot summer months. i'll save the other 2 bottles for then.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass

A - First off, I could barely get half of this in the glass before overflowing, due to the billowing out of control fluffy white head. I've never had this issue in the hundreds of beers i've poured before. Pours a hazy straw gold with jet-like carbonation. Head stays intact all the way down the glass, leaves behind a wall of lacing.

S - A bit musty with the faint smell of caramel malt and sweet honey when opening the bottle. Could fool me for being JW Dundee's Honey Brown.

T - Light malt upfront with some Honey Sweetness. The body doesn't have any rye flavor, just more of a musty taste with some astringent honey sweetness. A bit of refreshing hop kick as the beer passes back of the tongue before a slightly stale honey nut cheerios finish.

M - Light bodied, but with enough substance to be able to distinguish it from soda water, but would give it a run for its money in terms of carbonation level.

Overall Salmon Fly Honey Rye was heavily over carbonated and had a flavor profile that barely beats out higher-end macros. Part of this may be my fault as I purchased this bottle in August of 2011 on a research trip to Yellowstone. However, I think a majority of the faults are inherent to the beer itself and I don't foresee myself ever purchasing this again.

Reviewed from tasting notes.

Lightly hazed amber color with a flash head, no lacing.

Smells only vaguely of a lightly spiced malt, and that's about it. I certainly was expecting a more aggressive nose than this on a Rye Beer.

And the flavor follows suit. Light and wispy rye, a dab of honeyed malt, nothing more to report about.

Thin and light, a touch watery.

Not going to be revisiting this one. Not enough flavor to make it worth my while.

Appearance- Pours a golden topaz with a half finger width of bubbly head.

Smell- Sweet apple, rye malts, honey, floral hops, grains

Taste- The sweet apple hits initially with slight floral hops followed by the rye malts and a touch of honey. I expected this to be more biscuity but it has some pleasant fruity notes.

Mouthfeel- Light to medium bodied with light carbonation. Pretty smooth.

Overall- A sessionable rye beer by Madison. The fruity notes were pleasant but I was wanting the traditional biscuity flavours that are reminiscent of a rye beer. Other than that, an enjoyable beer.
