I wanted to provide an update on Brindley's because much has changed since the last review in 2006. As of a few months ago, they completed a renovation. They now have a walk in beer cooler with a much larger selection. Breweries include Bell's, Ommegang, Rogue, Unibroue, Lagunitas, Stone, Cigar City, Smuttynose, Green Flash, Terrapin and many others. The store is still focused on wine and liquor but the beer selection has improved greatly over the years and particularly in the last several months. I was able to buy Hopslam here well after the bigger stores had sold out. So if you're in Venice and you don't feel like driving up to Total Wine in Sarasota, give Brindley's a try. They'll definitely have something worth buying.

While in Venice on vacation this week I thought I'd check out Brindley's and find out what they were offering.
As soon as I pulled into a parking space I thought I was going to be disappointed. Stacks of BMC & Crown Royal blocked out the windows with only room for BMC neon lights. Upon entering, the situation looked as bad as from outside. Tons of BMC cases and aisles of liquor & wine. Wandered into the back corner and next to the cooler I found a set of shelves with some promise - Boddingtons, Murphy's, Guinness, Old Speckled Hen, etc.
It wasn't until I walked around to the other side of the shelves that I found some pleasant surprises - sixers of Rogue (Dead Guy, American Amber, & Mocha Porter), Anchor (Steam, Liberty Ale, & Porter) Lost Coast's 8 Ball Stout, and some of Dunedin's brews. I also noticed many of the same choices in the cooler.
Needless to say, I was pretty surprised given all the signs. I took my selections up to the counter and tried to talk up the guy at the register (seemingly the only employee there) about the beer selection. Unfortunately he didn't have much to say on the subject and couldn't tell me anything about Dunedin Brewing.
So here's the bottom line - if you're in the area and have the option of driving, I'd say go up to Sarasota and stop at The Butcher's Block. However, if you're in Venice and don't feel like driving very far, Brindley's will definitely suffice.
