Picked this one up in Bratislava. The bottle has the same label as the one currently pictured but with the Slovak name of Zlaty Bazant.

The appearance is a golden color just as the name suggests. The head was very white and about an inch tall when first poured. The head was still there after a few minutes but had diminished to less than half its original size with no lacing to speak of.

The aroma was very faint but there was a hint of alcohol when first poured. After some warming there was mild evidence of a floral hop presence.

The taste also had a hint of alcohol when first poured but again that changed with warming. Some hop bitterness coming through, but not much noble hop flavor that usually accompanies the style. It wouldn't be hard to drink a few of these in an afternoon but its flavor is pretty basic. It drinks smooth and doesn't leave a whole lot of aftertaste.

Bottle: standard 500mL green embossed bottle, chincey macro label.

Appearance: golden yellow in colour with plenty of carbonation. A foamy head puffs up and drops almost immediately to a half-finger head with good retention.

Aroma: a very clean, crisp, hop-orientated nose. Citric and grass hops hover over a sweet bread malt backing.

Taste: a typically reasonable and pleasant Czech pilsener. The hop flavours from the nose come through. Very easy to put down, this beer. Not brilliant, but refreshing.

Aftertaste: not much aftertaste at all which is fine as that is standard for the style. Just need to drink more.

Mouth feel: light in feel with a decent amount of carbonation. Could use a bit more.

Overall: not a bad pilsener at all, but with an equivalent of AU$60 for a case of 24 x 330mL, is it worth it? I don't think so. Just get a different, cheaper equivalent Czeck or German pilsener, which are just as good. this simply doesn't have the 'cut above' factor that would make the extra cost worth while.

Into a pilsener:

A: clear yellow colored bod yields a one finger puffy white head that appears and sinks to a half finger leaving some nice speckled lacing clinging to the sides of the glass. Some slowly moving carbonation is seen rising.

S: malts up front (different for a Czech), hops are there , still enjoyable

T: sweet and there's some light corn and rice

M: light and some harshness is prevalent. It leaves a dry aftertaste and finish. It is mostly drinkable.

O: this is good for a pilsener but perhaps a bit too malty for a Czech pilsener, yet I'd probably still come back to it.

I like this a lot more than Pilsner Urquell, I'll tell you why.

Bottle

Head was two fingers in the long neck. I did not see a freshness date, but it looked fresh.

Smells of lemon and grapefruit, and not like skunks.

Taste: Cereal, wet grain, a hint of metal.

Mouthfeel: thin

Overall, this is a decent representation of this style which is generally hit or miss for me. I'd have to say this was better than I expected!
