Pours a solid brown color, lots of muddle puddle color to it. The beige head is tight and quite short; settled into a light ring.
The aroma is smokey. I like smokey brews so this is cool with me. Notes of charred meats, bacon, burnt toast and peat. There is a subtle lemony note that I usually detect in porters. One of the more smoke forward aromas I have had in a long time.
The smoke is a bit more balanced in the flavor. The beer starts out with a neutral brown bread malt flavor. Typical of an english style porter. Some lemon notes as well. Not a robust porter base for sure. The smoke gradually sets in starting with notes of lightly smoked meat. The smoke continues bringing burnt toast and scorched wood and charcoal flavors. A bit of a dark sour cherry note from the coffee. The coffee is subtle and would get lost if it wasn't in the name of the beer.
The feel is moderate though I touch on the light side. Carbonation is weak but noticeable. Some sweet notes on the palate but things turn to a burnt bitterness quite quickly. Fairly aggressive bitterness in the finish and a tad sticky.
I like the smokey aromas and flavors of the porter, even though it is a bit rough in the finish. The base porter could use some work. Overall an enjoyable brew and I am glad I tried it as it is an in your face smokey beer.

Poured from 330mL bottle into a dimpled mug.
Appearance: deep, rich dark brown with plenty of haze and a finger of frothy tan foam with decent retention. A good-looking porter.
Smell: astringent and smoky with a little porter roast underneath. Nicely smoky, but not rich in character in general.
Taste: smoky right off the bat, which I like. The underlying porter character is somewhat drowned out by the smoke, but I kind of like that. There's a bit of sweetness underneath which is not exactly chocolatey, but has a nice porter character. It's not exactly smooth, but I like it nonetheless.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a nice, full creaminess. I dig it.
Overall: meaty and smoky, this beer fills the bill for a smoked brew. Its porter characteristics suffer a little bit for this, but in general I find it highly drinkable; umami all the way! I should note, though, that the coffee character is quite minimal, so this aspect is not really as-advertised.
