Poured from a growler into a half-pint chalice.

A: Clear, light brown color with one finger of diminishing off-white foam head. Light lacing remains on the glass.

S: Very floral hops and volatile spice suggestive of hot chile fruit are dominant, but a fine thread of toffee consistently appears.

T: Begins dry, with dynamic hop aromatics that show pine, ripe tropical fruit, and dank herbaceous qualities. Acidity is metered, smooth, very appropriate for style. Brown malt adds some dark roasted qualities in the middle. Flavors relax, showing some earth, in the finish where moderate bitterness emerges. Chile fruit lingers on the palate but is not hot like capsaicin.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, very smooth on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This is a balanced IPA with added interest due to the earthy brown malt. While nicely hopped, its aromatic qualities fall just short of those of the similar Stone collaboration. It provides fuel for an argument that brown may be the new black when it comes to aggressively-hopped beers.

Clear reddish brown with one finger of head that quickly settled to a thin cap. Moderate amount of lacing is left down the glass. The growler is a week old so not surprised by the less than perfect appearance.

An unique aroma of tree nuts, chocolate, citrus, pine, and dank herbal ness. Smells like this has been dry hopped which is surprising for a brown ale.

This is not a brown IPA, but a hoppy brown ale. Plenty of brown ale qualities can be found. Notes of nuts, chocolate, dark bread, and just a faint hint of roast. The hops soon take over with citrus, pine, and grassy herbal qualities. Bitterness is moderate but has a nice balance.

Carbonation is a little low, another result of a growler sitting around. Medium body.

A very enjoyable hoppy ale with different flavor qualities not usually found for hop heads. Better at the source.

Poured a nice clear chestnut brown with a huge pillowy and sticky tan head.

The nose is dominated by nicely aggressive dry hopping, nice citrus and tropical fruit with a nice dank green quality.

The flavor is a nice mixture of light roasty notes, nice light chocolate, and big green flavor. The malt notes are very good, but the hops really shine, big citrus and tropical flavors.

Nice oily and resiny hoppy mouthfeel.

Very good Brown IPA, I like the mixture of the tropical Nelson Notes with the very west coast citrusy flaconers flight.
