This place has re-invented itself over the years and now has a modern full bar and restaurant known as the sidebar within the liquor store and cheese shop. High quality all around. Very good selection. I recall a few yrs ago when the state of MN changed the liquor law to allow for Sunday retail sales, Jim Surdyk got into trouble because he opened his store on a Sunday before the new law had gone into effect. Surdyk's was fined but I don't believe it hurt the business in the long run. The 1st time I shopped there was the summer of 1987. There was a used car dealer and lot across the street. No high-rise apartments. The store has international, craft and domestic beers cold and on the shelves in isles. They have a nice walk-in humidor as well. Average prices, good service.

I was slightly disappointed with this place. Felt like a converted Walgreens/CVS and was not very inviting. The staff was very nice and were trying to help, but I felt the selection was way too generic for Minneapolis and it felt like anything really special would pass them up.

Surdyk's definitely has a wine and spirits focus. 10-15 years ago their beer selection was something to behold, but the shelf space for beer is basically unchanged since then and the selection isn't actually much better either. All that means that they're only a bit above average these days. Prices are average to slightly above average.

High-end liquor store. Prices have become more reasonable, but you're definitely paying more for quality service. Not recommended if you're a beer geek, but a good place for beginners with lots of questions.

They have a good selection especially of Belgians and Germans but watch the labels, some of the imported stuff can sit on a shelf for a long time. Their cheese shop is one of the best in town.

Obviously with as big of a liquor store as Surdyks they are going to have a wide selection of liquor, beer wine, cigars, cheese etc....They will have a large staff, an atmosphere of classiness, knowledge of what they sell and obviously try to compete to be the biggest and best liquor store in the area to get anything listed above. But this is all they are. I have had to many experiences of terrible service as well as my friends. Stories that come from the owner (who never sounds very friendly and she answers the phone basically any time you call) to people on the sales floor. I'm sorry, but in today's day of age, you better have good customer service or why should you deserve my business? Sketchiness about some of their pricing on certain beers compared to other neighboring stores concerns me about price gauging. Yeah, liquor laws may not carry the law like gas stations but it's still sketch and pretty lame. Avoid this place, they do not deserve your money. Go to someone who actually cares about you because you thought of going to their store.

I heard about Surdyk's price gouging and Jim's expressions a day or two later in the media. I hope no one goes into this store for craft beer anymore. And for me, it brings up the thought that if this establishment does this to rare craft beers like Darkness, then what is to say that it does not do that to wine and cheese and the rest of its pricing.

I ran into one of the cashiers that has worked there her entire life, she's a family friend, and she said she was worried about what will happen now because she has seen an immediate affect in traffic, craft beer being bought, and questions directed at her about the entire issue.

Most of the time I've been in there it's been a madhouse, especially whenever they have wine tastings or something similar. General layout is similar to a grocery store.
The beer selection is solid, with particular focus on imports (German/Belgian) and locals. Other than that, the selection isn't much better or worse than a number of places in the area.
The service is kinda spotty. There's people running all over and it's kinda hard to get someone's attention.
If you're in the area, it's worth going. Otherwise, some of the other places in the area have slightly better non-regional selection.

This is a good-standard-grocery style liquor store. What I like best is that they price their Belgians low and keep the standby's--all the Trappists, Ayinger, and Rodenbach on hand. They also carry a variety of sizes so you don't need to buy a wine bottle size of everything. They have their many beer categories that are clearly segmented and pay homage to our own MN brewers. They have staff specially selected just to handle beer questions, and usually get special releases items, although they won't take names for them.

Stopped here after a long line of other stores. Selection was pretty consistent with the other stores, and like a lot of the others was lacking in some of the higher end stuff. Was more of a wine store.... and a far as service I was never approached. This was be a good place for a tourist to make a broad purchase across a bunch of breweries with good prices but if you want something in particular, you might try the surburbs. I would go back if I was in the immediate area but find myself not wanting to deal with the traffic as much, although they did also have their own parking.

I would day the main focus of this place is wine, but beer is not forgotten either. Basically a small grocery store sized place with a small deli and cheese shop. The beer is in two aisles with one large cooler. The rest of the place is mostly wine with some spirits as well. A huge selection of imports. High quality stuff too. The american craft section is large and has a nice array of brews. I will say that I was surprised at the lack of bombers they carry. Mostly sixers if looking for american crafts. Overall, they really have a nice selection of beer. I saw plenty of workers, but was not asked if I needed help. The place had some wine and beer tastings happening and the place was packed. Prices were right on par. A really nice beer store that is worth shopping at.

Stopped here after the Town Hall Brewery, it was absolutely packed on a Friday afternoon. I noticed who I believe to be Alex Goligoski was there shopping too which was interesting.

There were wine tastings all over the place and it was achaotic zoo in there. It took a while to navigate over to the beer section amidst the mob of shoppers. The beer is in 2 large warm aisles and a row of coolers. There is also a nice Belgian section. I found a few Belgian beers I hadn't seen before and they were all dirt cheap.

The prices here seem to be the lowest I've seen in the Cities. 4.99 - 7.99 is all i paid for the 750ml bottles.

There were workers there but they were showing other people around the beer section already. They only had one variety of Surly in stock, the others were sold out. Selection is between a 4 and 4.5.

Overall it is a hectic but solid stop if you get there.

Incredibly well stocked with all the locals you want to find in Minneapolis (although I didn't look for Flat Earth). I normally go to Zipps when in town, but stopped in here instead on the last trip and was just as happy with what I could find.

A great place to walk and browse, I just wish I had more time. The only real knock against Surdyk's is their limited selection of singles. If it wasn't a bomber, you had to buy the sixer. As an added bonus Schell's was offering a sampling there that day.

Stopped by this place on my cities tour during the Odell/Great Lakes releases. Got some cheese and sausage, no beer. The store is nice enough, beer takes up 2 or so aisles plus a few end-caps in this predominately wine store. I was only asked if I needed help finding anything by some clerks stocking stuff, no one who seemed to be any sort of beer specialist. The beer was mostly on shelves, though there was a selection of stuff in coolers. A decent selection of American Craft, Belgians and some of the smaller name imports that I would have expected to see at a store that wanted to look like it had a big beer selection 10 years ago. And the prices! Through the roof. I was at 3 or 4 liquor stores that day, plus the one I work at and I would say Surdyk's was the most expensive or second to most after a Municipal I stopped at. I will probably only stop here if I really need something that no one else has or if I'm in that much of a rush and near by. Also, not having any singles was a big no no.

I also stopped by this place whilein MSP for Darkness Day. When I stopped by here, they were actually out of Surly, since there is such a crazy demand. The selection was huge, though. I'd say they probably had the largest selection out of all the places we stopped at. The quality of beers stocked was also very good. A big disappointed, though, was that nearly everything was sitting out on shelves and in the light. It's really sad to see all the hoppy beers wasting away on the warm shelves. The service, again, is pretty much what you'd expect from a liquor store. Everything seemed pretty reasonably priced.

Been here a few times, mainly for scotch since they have a great holiday sale for single malts. They do have a great beer selection as well. Pretty much anything that we get in Minnesota, they will have it. Most of the stuff is room temp, but they do have lots of cooler doors too. I gave it a 2 for service since I have never been asked if I need any help nor have I seen an employee other then the cashiers. The place is always packed too, but it is in downtown MPLS so what do you expect. Price is pretty on par.

I stopped here a view times while visiting my girlfriend in Minnesota.

I may be a bit biased coming from Wisconsin, but their beer selection doesn't top any of the places around Madison. I also think that France 44 has a better selection of beer than Surdyk's. None the less, it's still a good place to visit if you're around campus.

They have my favorite Minnesota brewery, Surly, in a quite plentiful supply. They also have Bell's, Avery, Boulevard, Breckenridge, and plenty of other breweries from around the country. I picked up an Ale to the Chief by Avery and a four pack of Surly Cynic.

The service here wasn't anything spectacular. The employees stood behind their counter, and really nothing more. I asked if I could break down a Surly four pack so I could try some various beers from Surly, but that was a no go. Too bad.

This is really the place to go in Minneapolis if you are a wine or beer enthusiast.

The selection of beer is top notch. Always a full compliment of Belgian Ales such as: Gulden Draak, Chimmay (and other Trappist breweries), Duvel, and Piraat. Also keeps many high end old ales.

The service is "meh" but then again, I've never really asked for help. I guess what I mean to say is that they are a typical bottle shop in this sense.

The quality of the beer is great, and shopping experience is pretty decent. The one thing I wish they would add are shopping baskets. The carts are great if you are going all out for a party, but picking up 6-bottles can be a bit of a hassle.

this is a wine store first that looks like a grocery store..however turn left when you enter the store and the last two rows are filled with american macros and lots of imports..lots of bombers and a great belgian selection they have a few singles but they are mostly in the imports so the domestic single selection is not good.. they do have a nice selection of craft/micro 6 paks..they also have a whole wall of chilled beer with a good selection.. overall you will find something here of value and taste... its worth a visit if you are on the east side
