Notes:
Upland's Harvest Ale is an American Pale Ale by design, but an ever more vibrant rendition by loading up our hopbback with freshly harvested Citra hops. Expect huge wafts of tropical fruit notes, balanced by a moderate bitterness and lightly toasted malt character.

Appearance: Clear gold with a thick white head. Good head retention and leaves a nice lacing all the way down the glass.

Smell: Grapefruit, freshly cut grass, bready malts and a bit of caramel. Nice, but not nearly as assertive as many wet-hopped ales out there. I'd like a little more hops.

Taste: A nice bite of bittering hops right off the bat. The flavor contribution from the hops is all pine and earth. I'm not really getting any of the grapefruit that was present in the smell. The malt backbone on this provides some nice biscuit and caramel flavors. Once again, I'd really like more hops.

Mouthfeel: Dry, crisp, medium carbonation. Quite nice.

Overall: Honestly my favorite part of this beer is probably the malt backbone. Being a wet-hopped ale though, I was really looking for the hops here, and I feel they could have been showcased a little more. Still a solid beer.

Pours a clear apricot copper color with a dense half inch cream head that lingers, eventually leaving sheets of lacing on the glass.

Grapefruit, tangerine, and pineapple open the aroma, with mango, fresh cut grass, and bready malt surfacing later.

Flavor is fairly earthy and resiny hop dominant, with lots of grapefruit pith underlying bready malt. Citrus tang is initially somewhat muted, in favor of bitterness, which is present throughout. Subsequent sips reveal more citrus character, tart orange and lime.

Body is moderate, with fairly high carbonation, followed by significant astringency.

Overall, a very nice beer, but more like an ipa. The aroma offers more hop character than the flavor delivers, and bitterness is a bit overwhelming. Hops are definitely showcased, not malt.

A-Amber orange, some carbonation, tries to leave behind some lacing.

S-Earthy hops, some malt, tad bit of citrus hops as well.

T-Earthy/pine hops, caramel and other malts. Decent mild bitterness. Balance is good. As it warms more citrus notes come through.

M-Light to medium bodied, good deal of carbonation along with hop resins.

O-After having Upland's APA and IPA I was worried about this one, but it delivered. Not great but a tasty brew. Man, I love fresh hopped beers.

Poured into my Upland pint glass. Glad to have a local fresh hop ale.

Pours orange/gold with a small white head. Little retention or lacing.

You can definitely tell by the aroma this one has citra. Citrus and the lush tropical fruitness I associate with this hop is present. A bit of pine and a touch of caramel provide balance.

Flavor is a bit surprising. Still some citrus and tropical fruit, but the hop flavor profile is decidedly leaning toward piney and resiny. Some caramel and grainy malts present to provide balance, but this one still taste way more like an IPA than a 35 IBU pale ale. I personally won't complain about that, but just surprised.

Medium to light mouthfeel. Perhaps a touch thin, but given the ABV I wouldn't expect a heavy mouthfeel. Medium carbonation and a lingering resin on the back of the tongue.

Good solid beer from my local establishment and one I'll be glad to drink any day. That said, I've had better fresh hop ale and would've liked to see the tropical fruitiness of the citra hop stand out a bit more in the flavor profile. Please make this one a yearly occurence Upland!

Bottled recently and shipped to me from Zapy...
The beer pours a rich looking copper with a thin white head that fades quickly. The nose is a tame citrusy/herbal sweetness with less emphasis on cut-throat citra hops and more on balance and drinkability. The taste is a bit harsh at first with far more earthy and resinous bitterness than expected, but initial sweetness is present to help compensate. Raw hop oils dominate my palate with each sip and I marvel at the style while drinking. The mouthfeel is just the right amount of up front sweetness and back end bitterness. I would absolutely recommend letting this beer warm up to cellar temperatures (at least) before drinking. It's saturated and thick, yet refined in that the beer makes its point about the fall hop harvest without slapping you in the face about it. Worth trying and thanks again for sharing.

A fresh bottle poured at around 50 degrees into a Red Hook limited release glass.

This is Upland's second round of the Harvest, and I was definitely looking forward to another fresh batch after last year's. Pours a crystal clear gold with a nice thick white head and solid lacing down the side of the glass. Aromas of honey, floral, and a distinct upland malt bill that comes through on all of their ales - the citra isn't overwhelming but it's there, very much blended in with the malts as opposed to standing out in front.

The taste very much confirms that - it's by far and away my favorite hopped offering from Upland, but as always I'd love more hops. Still, gotta hand it to them for shooting moreso for a balance between malts and hops, and the malt bill offers just enough of a sourdough (in a good way), rye, and biscuit backing for the wildflower honey and light lemony citrus of the hop bill. Very, very drinkable as a slightly spicier and hoppier pale ale offering.

The mouthfeel is light enough to be sessionable, but full-bodied enough to remind you that you're having a solid pale ale, and what is really sticking with me is the hint of spicy clove that is working well with the malts and hops here. I'll have to try this on draft to see if there's much of a difference. Overall, it's a nice local wet-hopped offering that runs about the same price per 6er as one bottle of Broodoo, and while it doesn't touch FFF's offering by way of in-your-face hop quality, it's still good in it's own right. I'm sure I'll enjoy plenty of these this fall.

Upland’s typical pales and IPAs are just so-so, but they have had some awesome limited releases. Here, hopefully, is another one of those.

Brewed about three weeks before the date of this tasting (assuming “2274” is short for the 274th day of 2012, September 30).

A: Quite a fizzy pour: bubbles clinging everywhere to the inside of the glass under a bubbly offwhite head. Clean, bright, golden body shining in the light. Retention is very thin, but there’s some spiderwebs of lacing around.

S: This nose is hop heaven: dank, gripping pine, juicy cherry, and pineapple puree. I love it. A complex malt presence yields grain husk, cornbread, cake batter, and lofty (not too heavy) caramel aromas: crisp yet sweet. This beer doesn’t necessarily open up as time goes on, but its initial punch is impressive.

T: At first, it’s a mouthful of lemon-wheat, chewy caramel malts, sweet white bread, and vanilla cream, highlighting a wheaty pilsner palate. Surprisingly, that’s actually a main component of this brew – the grain – and it serves to form a solid tannic backbone for the hops to rest on. They don’t need that much of a springboard, though, spilling out from the malts in an oily, resiny, smoothly bitter fashion: full, herbal tastes give each sip a flavor of hops more than the biting bitterness. It goes well with the malt character, flavorful and drinkable. Finishes with a little taste of bread crust and sweet citrus pulp.

M: I could drink this all day. This is very, very sessionable ale has only fleeting carbonation and a thin, refreshing body.

O: Probably the best Upland six-pack I’ve come across. After a few more weeks of age, though, I’m not sure it would hold up – standard fare for a wet-hopped ale – but it’s pretty damn tasty fresh.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass; bottled on 10/5, a little over two weeks ago. I talked to Chris from Upland about this beer this weekend, they get these Citra hops 48 hours after harvest in Washington. Not bad for IN

A - Pours a deep gold, maybe around 8 srm; almost no head to speak of, some visible carbonation; the top looks a bit oily, maybe from the wet hops, mostly clear

S - Definitely fruity, with grapefruit and citrus, some tropical as well, maybe mango, and also some piney notes in there as well. Smells good

T - A little surprising after the nose, a touch of sweetness, but mostly piney and bitter, tastes more dry hopped than wet, to me; I'm surprised this beer is only 35 IBU

M - Feels a little thin, very drinkable, finishing dry with lingering bitterness.

O - This beer has a great smell, but nothing else really stands out. I think this is a solid release from Upland, but I have to admit I'm a little disappointed. After having a fresh draft pint of 3F Broo Doo Harvest last week and a sipping on Founders Harvest this weekend, I would take either of those over this beer, any day.

Pours a deep golden color, solid white head with good lacing, some large soap like bubbles at first notice, definitely fresh, could perhaps stand for another week or two in the bottle.

Smell is heavy on piney resin but also some bright citrus. I read somewhere the hop is citra, which rings true with my nose.

Very smooth, almost caramel like mouthfeel and nicely bitter as well, a touch of honeylike sweetness. A bit thing though.

Really nice fresh hop, look forward to getting more of this before gone.
