Attractive amber, with a pleasing head of fine white bubbles. Lace is spotty, though.

Nose is grainy and toasty, even nearing sweet. Decent.

Taste is also toasty and malty, with touches of raisin and dried fruit. Actually, this one is as near to an amber ale as a bock, for me, with it's sweet and toasty character. Not bad, but not world-class, either.

This beer was sampled on-tap at the Illiana Mayfest on 5/26/2012.

The beer was a somewhat orange color giving a malty aroma that was slight. The initial impression was a slightly sour malt flavor that morphs into a more tart taste in the finish. There was not a lot of complexity to this beer. I was anticipating a certain degree of sweetness, though it never arrived. The mouthfeel was average for the style. Carbonation allowed the beer to linger just long enough for me to realize the bber was one-dimensional.

Bottle shared by plank10. Thanks Nick.

The beer is orange hued with a thin white head that leaves sparse lacing on the glass. The aroma carries grain, fruit, malt, sweetness. Smells like a bock. The taste follows suit, with a present sweetness throughout. Fruit, grains, and a bit of alcohol. Fairly thin in body. A decent beer, but not on par with the authentic German examples of the style.

12 ounce bottle, bottled in April 2011. Served in a mug, the beer pours a slightly hazy orange/amber color with about an inch off-white head. The head goes away quickly, and there isn't much lacing. Aroma is sweet and malty, the brew smells like bready malt, dark fruit, toffee and a little bit of grassy hops. Taste is mostly sweet, it tastes like toffee, bready and caramel malt, and some grassy hops. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's a bit syrupy and slick with good carbonation. I'd like to try a fresher bottle of this, but this one wasn't too bad at all. $1.99 for a single bottle at Liquor Barn.

amber color, some light haze to it and lots of visible carbonation. A smallish white head rose up, but quickly settled down leaving mostly nothing in its wake.

The aroma was loaded with grain. Light fruit vibes and a ton of malt. Nothing in here really led me to think this was a barley wine of any kind. A big malty bock would be completely accurate here. More of this carried over into the flavor as well. Lots of light grainey malts, with some light hints at a grass like hope profile, but mostly just a classic bock like taste. Not much alcohol and a thin feel to it as well.

Maibock - Upland Brewing Company
Bloomington, Indiana
STYLE – Maibock / Helles Bock
ABV – 7.5%
IBU - ??
DATE – 31 MAY 2011
SERVING TYPE – 12 oz Bottle
GLASSWARE – Tumbler
APPEARANCE – Honey orange in color. A 1/8 inch head that stay on top and lots of bubbles coming up fom the bottom of the glass.
AROMA- Sweet with fruity notes and a hint of malt.
TASTE – a light weight beer with a sweet grapefruit, like a very ripe pink grapefriut taste, not bitter at all but just a mild sweetness
MOUTHFEEL – Very light but with a heavy feeling in the after taste. I am assuming it is from the carbanation.
CONCLUSION – Good beer, I could see me drinking this on the lake or next to a fire. I think it would be more refreshing if it was ICE cold not fridge cold.

Fruity, spicy, earthy but also slightly metallic and artificial Maibock.
___

A: Very pretty deep apricot/pumpkin hazy body topped with a fleeting but regenerative two finger yelllowed white head.

S: Fruit, maybe dates, a hint of spice, and just the barest hint of dusty, herbal hops. Not very potent or inspiring.

T: Much bigger on the palate... sweet, creamy, fruity, even slightly smoky toffee malt with herbal, acidic, metallic hops. If you're into this style, you will probably like this beer, but as I am not, it's not exactly ringing my bell. Somehow tastes a bit artificial.

M: Full and syrupy, but heavily carbonated so it doesn't get heavy.

O: A solid effort, but not for me.

Poured into a Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a reddish-amber color, pretty translucent. Minimal white foam. Dissipates quickly

S: Sweet malts, hops and fruits.

T: Clean and crisp, with caramel, sweet malts, apple and a nice hop character at the finish.

M/D: Medium bodied, good carbonation. This beer fresh is pretty good. Very refreshing. Perfect for Spring time.

Good pour into a pint glass gives me 3 fingers head with good retention, the beer itself is a light amber with an off white head. Smells are caramel and malts. Taste is caramel, slight yeast, sweet malts and a slightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium and drinkability is very good, could session with this, even though the Abv. is high.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours crystal clear copper, with 1 ½ fingers of smooth off-white head. This thins out to about ¼ finger of foamy retention which hangs touch, leaving a frothy cascade of lace behind that quickly recedes down the sides of the glass. Malts and citrus are thick and sticky in the nose, with the earth and spice of the hops adding a zesty kick to this in the nose. Well balanced enough aroma here I guess.

The taste is a warming blend of t bready malt, toffee, and green citric notes that drenches the mouth with warm sweetness. The hops balance out the back of the profile, leaving behind earth, spicy dryness, and some residual sweet notes. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a pleasant crisp smoothness to the carbonation, while the entire feel sits with some heft on the palate but doesn't' overstay its welcome with any unneeded alcohol warmth.

This was a decent enough take on a Maibock, maybe being a little sweeter in the taste than I would have liked. This still stays VERY smooth though for nearly 8% and overall drinkibility really helps pull this one out of the fire.

Served in an Ayinger Celebrator doppelbock glass.

Big thanks to brundo4 for this guy!

Es is jetz Mai, so werde ich ein() Maibock trinken. (It's May, so I'm gonna drink a maibock.) The tawny hue of a May early sunset shines in the glass. A finger of thick froth rests on top before sinking away into the lovely oblivion below. The smell coming off of the surface is very grainy, very malty, and even had a slight kick of coffee to it as well. The maltiness and wheatiness come through on the tongue as well; the coffee has its own presence, but it very mild and soft; the overall sweetness, though obvious, is subdued, leaviing a nice balance with the light bitterness. The relatively light body and carbonation levels make for a refreshing brew, perfect for a nice May evening. Sehr lecker!

Appearance: Arrives with a hazy amber color and a modest head that descends to a ringlet, while leaving some splashes of lace

Smell: Biscuity, with distinct toffee sweetness

Taste: Biscuity, up front, with toffee sweetness and a hint of strawberry; there is a slight hint of grainy bitterness both before and after the swallow but the finish is dominated by the malt

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: A very nice stab at the style - neither too sweet nor too grainy

A - Bottle poured with two fingers of head. Very dark brown with hints of red when there is some red in the color.

S - Smells dead on like boiling wort with a very dark malt.

T - Tastes a lot like boiling wort....I'm starting to suspect something.

M - Very good, enjoyable to drink.

Here's an interesting note. It tasted so much like boiling wort that I pulled out my trusty hydrometer and took a reading. It was 1.025-1.03. I actually wonder if this was done fermenting when it was bottled....
