A- Amber copper, one finger head, that has pretty good retention and a fair amount of lacing as well.
S- The aroma is mild and not all that impressive. There is some earthy hoppiness and some noticable bitter aromas. But it seems to be lacking in depth.
T- There is some earthyness along with a touch of biscuit up front. The bitterness comes in but the bitterness doesn't seem to come with much flavor beyond just bitter.
M- Medium body, a touch oily. On the short side as far as finish.
O- Eh, this one was just so so for me. It has a good bit of bitterness but I'd like more flavor to go along with it. As far as this brewery's attempts, this one is a pass. Go for the porter instead.

Poured on tap into a pint glass.

A- The appearance is nice, two finger off white head, dissipates to a frothy ring around the glass, nice lacing, dark bronze color.
S- The scent is very mild, slight pine, earthy notes, malt is present, nothing stands out in the aroma.
T- Slight bitterness to this beer, some pine and citrus but very hidden, malt in the background, a little watered down IMO, easy drinking otherwise.
M- Medium mouthfeel, moderate carbonation.
O- This beer was not terrible but nothing stood out that would make me want to drink this again, easy drinkability but very plain.

A - A burnt, amber color with some great sheets of lace cascading down the sides as I drank it.

S - There's some light catty hops and a malt backbone, but really not a whole lot going on here. Smell is a bit too light.

T - Taste is also very weak on this one, some earth and slightly bitter hops, but not a whole lot else.

M - Slightly oily, light, and had light carbonation.

D - This was okay, wasn't a bad beer, but don't care to ever have this again.

On tap at the brew pub into a tasting glass...A light clear copper unappealing but a great white head with lacing that coats the whole glass supremely...The aroma is pretty boring, almost dead with only a hint of hops...The taste is boring, little flavor worth mentioning.

This is a beer worth skipping.

on-tap at the brewpub

cellphone notes

appearance: served in a standard pint - murky copper body with a dull beige ring

smell: rustic and earthy, herbal hops

taste: This was a pretty dissapointing IPA - earthy herbal hops without any real distinct citrus flavors, grassy and light toasted malts. In a town of Furious and Massala, this just aint gonna cut it

mouthfeel: tea-like, medium

drinkability:ok

On tap @ Barley John's Brew Pub (New Brighton, MN) on 8/12/10. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a clear copper, topped with a finger of frothy off-white head. Retains with a rich ½ finger, leaving back a solid cascade of lacing which slowly slides down the sides of the glass. The aroma is floral and pithy smelling, with extra hoppy notes of herbs and earthy rind. Some light grapefruit mixes with the breadiness of the malts to give this a bit of a citrus twang in the nose.

The taste is quietly assertive with a bite of bitter grapefruit, gritty rind, earth, and gritty herbal textures that run throughout. I say quiet because this is so well balanced by the toasted grainy character of the malts here. I'm maybe getting a little bit of caramel as well, which helps sweeten the pot some. Leftover bitter fruit and dry lingering rind finish this out nicely. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and VERY smooth with a silky and easy feel to the body yet still manages to maintain some light crispness to it as well, helping add some pop in the mouth.

REALLY solid house IPA here from Barley John's with a good mix of well balanced hop flavors and the drinkibility of this was great for 7%. This one really grew on me as I worked through the glass. This would definitely be a go-to if I was a local.

Copper coloured and hazy. Short head, sticky lace. Pungent fruity hop aroma mingled with burnt caramel. Caramel and earthy, pear like hops in the flavour, lingering orange peel bitter at the finish. Very refreshing. Lower coronation leaves a quaffable pint. It's bayou hot/muggy out right now and this beer is really hitting the spot. Cheers!

Deep copper color with a thin layer of suds on top.

Piney and earthy scents fill the nose. A touch of caramel sweetness as well.

Mmm, big piney hop profile with a bit of a floral and earthy presence as well. Solid malt backbone that adds sweetness in the form of caramel and toffee.

Mostly smooth with a hint of abrasive carbonation. Medium bodied.

Drinks very nicely. Without doing a side by side, reminded me a bit of Furious. It was that enjoyable for me and I would have it again in a heartbeat.

On tap at the brewpub.

Pours a mostly clear reddish copper, thin off white head forms, drops down to a real solid ring around the glass, leaves a few lace spots, looks good. Smell is neat, light and fruity, caramel, very malty and earthy, some floral hopping, toast, touch of citrus. Taste is similar, fruit up front, bready and caramelized through the middle, very malty, some floral and orange peel, quite fruity, real solid bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with low carbonation, very drinkable. A nice IPA, but I would call this more British than American.

The first beer I ordered at Barley John's for lunch.

Served in a pint glass, it appears light copper with a light tan head that shrinks to a small cushion rather quickly, but has great retention from there on out. A healthy carbonation aids in the retention. Displays good lacing, pretty impressive.

The nose is very earthy and piney hops. Also a significant caramel malt backbone shines through to show this is a well balanced brew.

I can see why this is considered an "English" style IPA by Barley John's, as it's more malty than it's American counterparts. There is a significant woody and earthy hop character, but the caramel malts more than hold there own in the battle, which ends in a nicely balanced IPA.

Medium body and leaves a nice bitter aftertaste. There is a little bit of a bite, but nothing too intrusive. For 6.8% ABV, it's not noticeable at all. Great drinkability.

Overall, a solid English style IPA offering from Barley John's. I think I made a good choice for my first brew. Very pleased.

I'm very impressed with this brew. Pours a very dark copper, almost brown with subtle head. The aroma is malty, with caramel and then hoppy at the same time, with pine and citrus. The flavors of this brew are intense. Malty at first, but balanced with an intense hop finish. This brew is full bodied, yet almost too easily drinkable. I may have to go get myself a growler or two before this one runs out.

Enjoyed on-tap at the brewpub. Some hoppy aroma. Grapefruit colour and very lacey. British IPA with fairly high 6.8%. Northern Brewer and East Gouldings hops.Caramel and a bit of sweet fruit.Average mouthfeel and decent carbonation. The beers here are off-centred.

Hazy copper color with a small head that settles slowly. Leaves plenty of lacing behind. It has a balanced malty and earthy hop aroma. The flavor is likewise malty with caramel notes with a nice bitterness on finish. More the English tradition of IPAs. Has a medium mouthfeel and a mellow carbonation. The ABV is too high to give this a higher drinkability score.

A-Turbid, light copper with a foamy light tan head that reduced to leave thick lace.

S-Earthy, woody hop aroma a bit of caramel malt pokes thru. Nice scent.

T-Malty sweetness awash in a sea of Fuggles! Very tasty English-style IPA.

M-Medium body with a nice aftertaste of lingering hop bitterness.

D-At 6.8% this beer is a bit too much to be a session IPA but very tasty nonetheless. Lower the ABV a point or so and this goes to a 5.

This is the new stockyard. At least, it doesn't taste anything like Stockyard I had a year ago. This is a great session IPA. The hops started out very smooth and fruity like punch (not to harsh) and slowly faded to more citrus rind flavors with a low, but constant bitterness. Quite tasty, if the growler's weren;t so much, I'd probably get one.

I've had this several times before, decided to review it this time. Startingly good looking this time around, big and frothy white head with lots of lacing, deep amber in color. Very nice. Aroma is pretty nice but weak, a little biscut like malt and slight floral hops. Taste is a lot better than I remember, biscut malts are nice, slight hop bitterness, but also some tang to it. Mouth is still a little thin, but I'm wondering if there weren't some tweaking of the recipe from a year or so ago. All in all, its a good, enjoyable beer.

Pours crystal clear, colored bronzy amber. Head of larger bubbles is big at first but quickly subdues. Has a sweet cherry smell to it, with a spicy roast malt aroma with hints of yeast and hops coming through as well. A light malty taste with hints of yeast, and again a sweet fruity taste covers up a broad underlying hoppiness. Its a subtle bitterness from the hops, but its definately there. Smell and taste both have a somewhat bready taste. The mouthfeel is average, with a decent carbonation.
