This was a very pleasant first time experience! The beer selection was nice, the beer quality was excellent, the food was delicious, and the service was exemplary. The prices for everything did seem to be just a tad high, but you definitely get top quality for what you pay.
About the only thing I can say that they can improve on is to maybe have at least one imperial-style beer in their selection. Don't get me wrong, all of their beers were fantastic (their stout and scottish ale were two of the best that I've ever had!), but I also enjoy "big beers". It's a personal preference, and should not be a reflection on this establishment. I will not hesitate to go back there again when I am in the neighborhood.

Coddington Brewing Co is the only local brew pub for the islanders. The pub is located in Middletown on the border of Newport. Any given night of the week this place can be packed in, for all the right reasons!
There is a sit down dining area separate from the bar with a great view of the brewing equipment. There is a pool table, juke box and a large screen tv in the bar area. The menu includes some great appetizers, entrees and desserts at great prices. They take pride in their brewing by adding to the menu a basic explanation of the brewing process and ingredient listings for their hand crafted tasty beverages.
And then the beers, mmm the beers. There are year round available selections with great seasonal varieties. The cold months bring the roasty oatmeal stout and the deliciously smooth chocolate porter. A Golden Ale is available for the lighter palates along with a Blueberry Blonde served with actual blueberries. For a small annual price one can become a Mug Club Member. This includes your own ceramic mug which just happens to be slightly larger than any one else's pint glass. Ordering to go? Grab a growler on the way out.
Coddington is a great local spot and an attraction to visit for the out-of-towners. With such a selection of great craft brews on tap, why would any one want to order a bottle in this pub? Enjoy!

The brew pub as mentioned by others is very reminiscent of a family chain restaurant. I would site this as the establishments only real flaw.
The only food item we had was the potato skin sampler, which consisted of: Broccoli and chesse, Chili, steak and several other tasty toppings. A couple next to us ordered the nachos, that is on my list for next time, it looked ginormous.
The beer sampler is quite large. 8oz pours which we were not expecting. I will not review any one particular beer, but would say their beer is quite good. I took a growler of the IPA home.
Prices were very reasonable.

I frequent the island about once a month. Its the only place i've found that serves good food and decent beer. They don't do anything fantastic with their beers, but I would highly recommend the ESB. The GF loves watermellon and blueberry when they are in season. Growlers are inexpensive. We usually go and get the worlds largest nachos which are $10 but more than enough for dinner for 2. Its also away from the hoity toity society of downtown newport. If you get bored, Coastal Extreme/Newport Storm is right next door, and they usually have something intresting worth trying

A. Walk in and have a view of the brewing equipment and dining area. Walk a little more and there is nice bar that has about 10 seats. Couple of more tables and a pool table in the bar area. Above the bar it has a TV, grain bags and varied brewery decorations.
Q. All the beer was fresh.
S. Bartender was helpful and attentive.
S. Selections was limited to what they brew in house.
F. Never had a bad meal here.
V. Prices we reasonable.
This used to be a nice Sunday ride for me and my wife and grab some beers and good food. With more local beer bars to go to I only hit this place up couple times a year. They have a sampler rack. There beer here is brewed for the masses and not for the extreme beer geek. The have some interesting mixology going on with there beers and other liquors that are available.

First time I had been in the place although I grew up in RI. I had never really heard about Coddington's. My fiancee grew up in Tiverton and worked at the Naval base in Newport so she had been to Coddingtons and gave it a good reveiw. We were passing by for like the fifth time and I decide to stop and get lunch. Nice atmosphere rather quite which was nice for a relaxing lunch. The Womans PGA torny was going on so it was quite in the afternoon. Impressive diplay of there seven barrel sytem. Bar tender was very knowledgeable about the brews and the rest of hte staff were very nice. Good clean place good food. The wings were great extra crispy! We had a white pizza that was great and then we split a Rubin. Needless to say we had leftovers. Everything was excellent and all the staff were attentive. Prices were reasonable and a nice selection of seven beers on tap. Good offrings and some fun styles. I recomend this place if you are in the area and maybe follow lunch up on a friday with a tour at the Coastal Extreem Brewery (Newport Storm).

Six beers on tap (seven including Barley Wine). Their website does not reflect most recent offerings.
We tried the sampler that included an IPA (good), Irish Red Ale (ok), Irish Stout (quite nice and best of the lot), Czech Pilsner (better than average), Blueberry Blonde (my fiance thought it was good, I thought it was weird), Golden Ale (fair, not spectacular).
All of the beers were served cold (too cold for the stout).
The food was pretty good. Had a buffalo chicken sandwich that I liked with good curly fries.
The Irish stout cannot be purchased in a growler. I went to try the Chocolate Porter but that will not be back till the winter according to our server. This place is worth trying, but nothing to rave about.

So after taking my girlfriend to Newport to pop the big question, she thought I deserved a microbrew, and we found this place courtesy of BA. We stopped in for lunch, so the crowd was relatively quiet. Decor was a nice New England colonial look, nothing too tacky. Service was very pleasant. I tried the beer sampler, which consisted of their golden ale, IPA, blueberry blonde, Irish red, doppelbock, and Irish stout. They were all quite tasty, although if I was forced to choose I'd go with the doppelbock. The food selection was fairly standard, but the turkey club I had was moist and big enough to serve my appetite. Perhaps my mood was a little biased by the engagement the day before, but I was very impressed. We both agreed that if we lived locally this would become a regular favorite.

Visited for the first time on 2/13/08. It was a Wednesday afternoon, so it was mostly a business lunch crowd with a nice relaxed atmosphere. The place seemed pretty spacious and well-laid out. There were a total of six beers on-tap, Golden Ale, Blueberry Blonde, India Pale Ale, Dopplebock, Winter Warmer and Irish Dry Stout, along with Woodchuck Cider; a nice diverse group. Growlers were pre-filled and sitting in cooler back inside the brewing room, which was visible through large glass windows. I didn't see it done while I was there, so I'm not sure if they would fill an empty growler fresh from the tap. The service was prompt, friendly and seemed knowledgeable about the beer. The food was decent, nothing spectacular, but I go to a brewpub for the beer not the food. The prices were reasonable and less expensive than I had anticipated. Overall, I found it to be a place that I wouldn't mind frequenting if I lived a little closer.

We visited here after a day trip to Newport. We were very pleased with the overall experience of this brewpub. My wife and I sampled a few of the beers. While they may not have been at the top of their categories, they were certainly decent enough. My wife and I both opted for seafood while we were here, and we were not dissapointed. She opted for the stuffed shrimp and I went for the stuffed scallops. They make their own stuffing here which was excellent. They also had a decent enough kids menu for my daughter. The decor was a little bland, but then again they weren't trying for the expensive ambiance.
