I don't regularly hit up their Downtown location, but it does differ quite a bit than their Shepard spot. A pint of Guinness is more expensive here, but I'm sure the location explains that.
I think Shay McElroy's is more geared towards a Downtown crowd, obviously because of the vicinity, but being based on that, not much is offered and it can be a bit pricey.
Its not a bad place if you're stopping by of the light rail for a quick drink, but if you have time to stop Downtown and hang out, there's definitely better..

A bit catty-corner to Flying Saucer, it had a wide front along Main Street with outdoor seating. Inside and right was the laminated redwood bar with the extensive selection of bottled liquors. The taps and bottles were pedestrian, at best, although the liquors were very good. Me, I'm using the lavs on the far left, drinking up and moving on. Unworthy! Nice snug of leather sofas and upholstered chairs just before lavs. I recommend that this place be purged from the rolls so that others will not waste their time.

I was in Houston this week and saw this place on Beerfly and decided to give it a shot.
This is a fairly small bar. I would guess that you could seat about 20 at the bar and maybe another 40 or so at the tables. If they had a backroom or an upstairs area, I didnt see it. There was maybe 6 people in the bar for happy hour.
They have a nice back bar, the pub has lots of wood, glass & brass. There is exposed brick and lots of Irish pub memorabilia. It also has a small patio in front.
They offer 12 taps including: Smithicks, Fat Tire, Anchor Liberty, St. Ambrose, Harp, Guinness, Bass, Pyramid, Shiner, a cider and a few macros. Maybe 20 bottle choices. Best are SNPA, Sam Adams, Murphy's stout, Chimay, Duvel and Hoegarten
The beer is served to cold.
Friendly service, may be a fun place with a group or later at night.
