A thick lather on this well-chilled amber lager. Nose hints at a caramel character, and the taste brings up a nutty, roasty quality, with a little smidge of hoppiness in the finish. Nonetheless, this hop edge seems to be run over by the sweetness of the malts. Medium to full-bodied (for a lager), but this one seems a little off to my tastes.

Mad Anthony's Auburn Lager is a tremendously drinkable session ale. If I was looking for a beer to accompany a suspenseful NBA Finals or World Series game, this might be it.

There's nothing extraordinary about this beer, but what it does, it does very well. It is clean, well balanced, nicely hopped, and has sufficient maltiness and a low enough ABV that I can enjoy several in a sitting. Certainly deserving of a pitcher with a group of friends!

Was in Ft. Wayne and picked this one up along with other local beers from the Belmont. Poured into a pint glass.

A: Pale and hazy light brown. Actually Auburn is a suitable name. A
thin bone white head that minimizes and then lingers with stick up
but not lace.

S: Eventful nose. Hops, earthy pine, citrus/grapefruit. Some sweet malt.

T: The earthiness is abundant with the pine, hops, and floral. Some citrus
Comes through the nose.

M: Nice and juicy from the beginning. A pleasant aftertaste. Decent coating.

Color is, well, auburn, that is to say a reddish-brown with a chestnut head that poured 1/2 a finger. Beer is unfiltered or bottle conditioned, a definite plus for me.

Malt is typical sweeter, lightly kilned aromas of toffee, yet there is a very light toastiness underneath. Hops are your traditional floral Lager hops, I'll guess Saaz since the odds are good that I am right.

Way more toastiness in the taste, along with bready hops, clean yeast, and a very slight roast character.

Very bright, yet not harsh. Refreshing.

A tasty beer that could session well at an outdoor BBQ or sporting event. Above Average.

Bottle poured into pint glass.

A: Decent foamy off white head. Appropriately named with an auburn color.

S: Malts, hops, and something a bit sweet.

T: Toasted malts with some caramel. A little bit bitter.

M: Smooth. Decent carbonation.

D: Drinks easy. A bit more bitter than I'm used to in American Ambers. Not bad though.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Sam Adams pint glass. Poured a murky amber color with a big active foamy head. The head settled down where it left some very good lacing on the glass.

The aroma is grainy and crisp with some malt sweetness to it and a hint of hops. The taste is malty with some caramel flavor coming through, but finishes with a slight tartness to it. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side and carbonation is high.

Auburn Lager isn't auburn at all, but is faintly fuzzy pumpkin with generous carbonation. The beige head shot to the top of the glass and is impressively persistent thanks to the bubble factories on the bottom of the glass. Several sudsy scraps of suds stick... and a whole lot more of them stick after the second and final pour.

The nose is too tart fruity. An American red lager can be several things, either alone or in combination (malty, hoppy, yeasty), but it shouldn't be tart and tangy. An average score is being kind.

It's no surprise that the flavor follows suit. Without any sort of bottle or label dating, it's impossible to determine if this is old beer. It doesn't taste old, just poorly brewed.

What malt is present tastes slightly toasted-earthy, so all is not lost. Hops are on the low end in terms of both flavor and bitterness. The dominant flavor is an upripe peach and lemon juiciness that, obviously, does not belong. The beer is almost lambic-like, though it's doubtful that it was intentional.

The mouthfeel is par for the style course. It's on the light end of light-medium and isn't as boisterously bubbled as first feared. Nothing to get excited about, however.

My first Mad Anthony brew is not a successful one. Here's hoping this bottle is either past its prime or part of a bad batch. It would be great if I could find another single someday, but if I've only run across Auburn Lager once on countless trips through Indiana, it isn't likely.

Acquired from raznug, courtesy of the Under 100 III BIF so a big "Thank You" goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light coppery brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is kind of faint but contains caramelized malts, some fruit and a little hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of lager yeast and a hearty malt character. Then some mildly sweet flavors of caramel and fruit come in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a decent balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer that is worth sessioning with and drinking for a long time.

This madbrew was quite decent. The lager wasn't too thick and had a nice color. I could drink a few of these paired with the right foods. This beer would probably be better off served on tap. It just has the mouthfeel of a beer that would give you a great refreshing taste on tap.

12fl. oz bottle poured into my pilsener glass

Pours a vibrant dark copper color with orange hues with a three inch slightly tan frothy head. Great head retention that last throughout the beer and leaves very sticky soapy lacing clinging to the sides of my glass.

Smell is that of some grains, mild like hops, and some biscuit like malts.

Taste is very simple of sweet malts, slightly caramelized and toasted(biscuit like)?. Very little hop presence if any could I detect in this beer. Slightly sour-ish dry finish if you ask me.

Mouthfeel is light bodied with high carbonation. Very crisp and dry. Leaves a funny taste lingering after you have taken your sip.

I have nothing against lagers but this one doesn't do it for me.

12 oz bottle poured into pilsener glass.

A: Pours with a HUGE foamy off white/light brown head. Auburn in color. Lacing is very faint.

S: Smells of sweet malt, not much else.

T: Waiting for the head to calm down... there we go. Very heavy on the malt. Toasted and a bit like caramel, definitely sweet. Just a bit of hop bitterness gives some decent balance. A bit sour?

M/D: Tons of carbonation. Thin body that is smooth and goes down with no alcohol burn. Sessionable.

Overall... not bad.

A: Golden amber in color small head that fades fast. Some particulate floating around in glass.

S: Some malt with hops coming through.

T: Fairly bitter with decent amount of hop flavor.

MF: Light body with mild carbonation.

D: A drinkable amber but the hops seemed to overpower the other flavors.

Poured from bottle to pint glass.

Thanks to tburkhart, I'll be able to try this one in my Mad Anthony glass while wearing my Mad Anthony sweatshirt.

Pours a foggy dull amber. Nose is kind of nutty it seems. Flavor brings the same. Overall sweet tone that's not overbearing. But mostly that nutty character is all that shows. Feel has a carbonationcthat nibbles fairly aggressively at the tongue. Liquid is typical, this is a nice enough brew. Well put together and an easy session brew.
