We came very close to missing this great place on our trip to Asheville. With so many places to try it can be overwhelming. Do yourself a favor, and go here. If turned out to be our favorite tasting room for atmosphere, and vibe. The bartender was great and even though it was quite busy, made time for conversation. Also met the owner who was very friendly and welcoming.
They have a big garage door that was open during our visit, as well as an outdoor patio area. We were lucky enough to have seats open up at the bar right after we arrived.
We enjoyed the IPA, Pale Ale, and Rainmaker IIPA. All were excellent.
Call the tasting room to see if they are open early. We would have liked to know that before our trip, as the 4pm opening time is what held us back to start with. So glad we fit it in on our last day. We liked it so much we did not want to leave.

Jack of the Wood (serves Green Man) is one of the bars that is a must stop for me on any road trip. I really enjoy their IPA (especially from the cask). As far as the atmosphere goes it's similar to any good Americanized Irish Pub. It can get quite lively in there on the weekends with bands playing. There is some good choices on the menu but the beer is what I will travel out of the way for. Aside from the restaurant there is the bar that is a hole in the wall across town called the Tasting room. My wife and I go there to get away from crowds and to simply enjoy the beer. Since going to the Tasting Room of Green Man Brewery, I only go to the tasting room (unless it's closed in which case I'll head up to Jack of the Wood).
Green Man, best beer in NC hands down.

This place is a must visit on your Asheville brewery tour. I highly recommend the IPA and Rainmaker double IPA.The prices are very reasonable and they fill the growlers onsite for $10.00 and $20.00 for the Double IPA.The atmosphere was awesome and the staff friendly and very informative regarding the brews. They also serve pretzels with some of the best beer mustard I have ever tasted. They also sell containers of the mustard to go as well as T shirts and beer glasses.
My favorite brewery in Asheville by far.

Dropped by Green Man Brewery on my way through town this past Friday evening. Their website says they're open only until 9 p.m. but I left at 10 p.m. and the other patrons I left behind at the bar were still going strong. That's the thing about this place, it seemed so laid-back when I walked in, it was very comfortable. Late on a Friday seems the perfect time to drop by for a round or two; the bartender informed me they were at standing-room only a couple hours earlier.
It's a sort of minimalist, eclectic atmosphere (including some kind- of-creepy yet interesting local? artwork). They do have several TV's mounted on the walls and above the bar, and some dart boards as well. They had plenty of their own brews on tap when I dropped by, and some guest taps as well.
After ordering up a round I was immediately offered complimentary pretzels mustard etc.. The bartender was very friendly. She let me sample a couple of brews before ordering what I wanted. Also, she has really excellent taste in music...
I tried the stout, the porter and the ESB and left with Growlers of the later two. Enjoyed my visit immensely and will definitely return in the future.

Green Man is tucked away a few blocks southish from Jack of the Wood and the Monk. 8-10 seats at a bar with the beers clearly listed with prices for pints, growlers and pitchers. A few tables next to the tanks..I love this about Asheville, the intimacy at the the tasting rooms. This one is right there with French Broad for having the most 'close quarters' tasting rooms in town, as you are truly right-the-fuck next to the tanks and kettles. I love smelling a mash while I'm drinking a beer more than (almost) anything.
The beer is always very, very fresh here. More so than the pub, and the selection can be better here as well. Not that the pubs beer isn't nice and fresh, but at the brewery it's just sublime.
The bartenders know the beers and tend to be relatively attentive and do there job well.
No food here, but their pub up the street has a menu.
Beers are normally priced for the city, and growlers are a buck or two cheaper than many others here. I was told that a keg of pale would normally be around $85, but that they weren't filling any kegs at the time). I have to assume that's for a 1/4 barrel, because the going rate for a 1/6 of Asheville pale is like low $60's, and this is one of the cheaper brewhouses. So that ain't bad.

A.K.A. Dirty Jack's is Green Man's brewery bar.
I give high marks on the atmosphere for this place is what YOU make of it. It is NOT fancy by any means, it is a working brewery afterall. But, the bar is charming and the table seating fairly ample and the place allows for mingling, conversation and FUN! Also, there is ALWAYS English football on the tele when we go....keeping things authentic!
Goods marks for the selection too as they always have a solid and varied list of choices to include one of Asheville's only dedicated CASK offerings. During my last visit there was a special Winter Warmer flight set of 4 beers created by the assistant brewer, Mike. See my reviews for the CRAZY (but totally awesome) offerings!
Food--what food? Well, good marks becasue they offer pretzels with some of THE best damn mustard I have ever had the pleasure of eating. You can buy it by the jar if you are so inclined!
Lastly is the service. I am embarrassed that I do not know his name but the English barkeep that seems to ALWAYS be on duty is, without question, THE BEST bartender in all of Asheville. He is quick, efficient, affable and most of all pleasant. This gentleman has it going on!
I always seem to forget how much I enjoy DJ's until the next time I go. It is a must stop while in town.

While off the proverbial beaten path of the main heart of Asheville proper, Green Man Brewing - or Dirty Jack's if you rather - is still within a short walk - 1 mile from our hotel on Woodfin Street. It reminds me of a much smaller version of what Victory Brewing Company once was - an oasis when, at first glance, you thought there was nothing.
The taproom in and of itself is not overly impressive if you are looking for true pub feel or an Uber industrial vibe as can be popular with some places of this style. As it has been previously reported, this place is nestled into a garage - but what a great garage. The bar is a thing of beauty, long and natural in all of its wooden glory. About 6-8 high back bar stools with other tables offered away from the bar, but still within earshot.
We were the first in on this given day when Lil Mike was tending the bar and doing the deal. At 2:00 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, things were pretty quiet - and my wife and I were fine with that for a while. The selection is as advertised with the Green Man brews covering the spectrum of their classics - ESB, Pale Ale, IPA, Porter and Stout, not to mention a few taps from Boulder Brewing Company. This was of no consequence to me as I was all about their newly redesigned - and amazingly stellar, by the way - Pale Ale and their SUBLIME IPA on cask. Served properly, correct temperature, great balance, a gem.
No food menu being offered here. but some great hard pretzels with some WONDERFUL craft made, whole grain mustard. Damn near spot on match for pints of well-crafted ales.
Friendly, great vibe and some proper football going on all around. My wife and I actually spend several hours downing pints and playing Scrabble. Perfect.
Since moving to South Carolina nearly four (4) years back, Green Man has been my preferred place for pints despite being an hour away. Great beers, great folks, and slightly off the beaten path.
Hats off to the whole Green Man crew. I cannot wait to get back, hopefully not before too long.

This is a cool place and a must visit when in Asheville.
A - Really laid back and very comfortable. Classic Asheville rolled up garage door with a big open space and the bar, cooler, and dart boards in the brewery. Nice outside area as well. Nice mix of people and good conversation.
Q - Great, the beer is fresh, well made, and yummy.
S - One bartender was working when we were there and the service was good.
S - They were pouring four when we were there and also had IPA on cask. Very Good.
F - I gave this an N/A as they just have free hard pretzels with mustard. However, the mustard is awesome and available for sale. Good snack, but I can't really say they have food.
My only regret about going here is that we planned to go back to buy a growler and some mustard before we left but got back after they closed. But that's just a good excuse to visit again.

This place was my personal favorite out of the latest Asheville, NC trip. A marvelous local brewery / tasting room, tucked away in an older industrial section of Asheville. The building looks like it was a small warehouse or possibly a garage in its earlier life. Now it's a great local small output brewery. The brewery equipment is easily viewed from the tasting room up front, as most of the building is one large room. The place smells of malt and yeast! Yea baby! There is a bar and tables set up front near the windows and roll-up garage door. A side porch gives the place a little extra seating. Mainly locals and those "in the know", which I like, frequent the place. It has an "old but reused" feel to it that I like. The local dogs come with their owners and it's a very friendly, laid back atmosphere. You feel like you know the bartender after you leave the place. The only other place I know of similar to this local brewery / tasting room is Oak Creek Brewing Co. in Sedona, AZ. The beers ranged from good to excellent. There is always one beer on the hand pump (cask) and at the time of my visit it was an ESB, quite good. However, the Toasted Coconut Porter/Stout was incredible! Hands down one of the best beers I have EVER had! I could have stayed there all night, just drinking that beer. Looking back, we should have.
Don't let the location or look of the place concern you, just sit and enjoy the local beer, this is the tops!

We recently did the Asheville brewery trek and I have to say this was my favorite brewery of the trip. I love how you are right in the action at this place. Beer is being brewed right in front of you while you drink beer. The smells are wonderful and I love the soccer atmosphere. I assume the owner is a huge soccer fan. We got to try a Cask porter which was wonderful and a small batch IPA that was hands down the best beer I had while I was in Asheville. I forget what the IPA was called, I want to say illuminati but don't quote me on that. We had a wonderful Woman waitress who was very knowledgeable and friendly. Needless to say I walked out of there with a couple shirts, pint glasses, and a growler. I highly recommend this place.
