A.K.A. Dirty Jack's is Green Man's brewery bar.
I give high marks on the atmosphere for this place is what YOU make of it. It is NOT fancy by any means, it is a working brewery afterall. But, the bar is charming and the table seating fairly ample and the place allows for mingling, conversation and FUN! Also, there is ALWAYS English football on the tele when we go....keeping things authentic!
Goods marks for the selection too as they always have a solid and varied list of choices to include one of Asheville's only dedicated CASK offerings. During my last visit there was a special Winter Warmer flight set of 4 beers created by the assistant brewer, Mike. See my reviews for the CRAZY (but totally awesome) offerings!
Food--what food? Well, good marks becasue they offer pretzels with some of THE best damn mustard I have ever had the pleasure of eating. You can buy it by the jar if you are so inclined!
Lastly is the service. I am embarrassed that I do not know his name but the English barkeep that seems to ALWAYS be on duty is, without question, THE BEST bartender in all of Asheville. He is quick, efficient, affable and most of all pleasant. This gentleman has it going on!
I always seem to forget how much I enjoy DJ's until the next time I go. It is a must stop while in town.

Vibe: The tasting room has the appearance of a garage with a small bar area, some stand up tables. There are two dart boards in the back where you can see the fermenting tanks. Much more seating is available in the outdoor side porch, which features reclining chairs, picnic tables and some shade. Pretzels and mustard are provided as munches.
Quality: Beers were served at the proper temperature in pint glasses.
Service: There was just one bartender working but the wait for beers was never that long.
Selection: For such a small bar, they had a very big selection with at least 10 taps and 2 casks. Flights were also available.

Green Man Brewery was one of the highlights of my trip to Asheville. Slightly off the beaten path and tucked away in a garage, this unassuming brewery nonetheless produces outstanding beer and is now a required stop. The atmosphere is laid back and inviting, and the beer impressive. I was fortunate enough to sample their DIPA, Stout and Black IPA, and all were extremely well done. A place I'll definitely visit again.

Jack of the Wood (serves Green Man) is one of the bars that is a must stop for me on any road trip. I really enjoy their IPA (especially from the cask). As far as the atmosphere goes it's similar to any good Americanized Irish Pub. It can get quite lively in there on the weekends with bands playing. There is some good choices on the menu but the beer is what I will travel out of the way for. Aside from the restaurant there is the bar that is a hole in the wall across town called the Tasting room. My wife and I go there to get away from crowds and to simply enjoy the beer. Since going to the Tasting Room of Green Man Brewery, I only go to the tasting room (unless it's closed in which case I'll head up to Jack of the Wood).
Green Man, best beer in NC hands down.

Oh, Green Mane...
Dark and divey - darts, soccer on the TV, good tunes, avant garde bartenders.
Tap selection was quite boring, as anticipated. Green Man tends to stick to the classics, and in my opinion doesn't execute them particularly well. Having had their malty IPA and bleh ESB before, I opted for the cask porter with cocoa nibs. It was pretty great - a very nice surprise.
Given this introduction, it may be a surprise to the reader that Green Man actually brews a few whales. A berliner weiss and squash farmhouse ale were available in lovely 750ml bottles - both in extremely limited quantity. I'm not sure how a brewery that has previously shown really minimal ambition can start cranking out interesting and well crafted wild ales, but I don't question whales, I hoard them.
Interesting stop - if there aren't whales present, it may be hard to stay for longer than 1 beer.

This is a cool place and a must visit when in Asheville.
A - Really laid back and very comfortable. Classic Asheville rolled up garage door with a big open space and the bar, cooler, and dart boards in the brewery. Nice outside area as well. Nice mix of people and good conversation.
Q - Great, the beer is fresh, well made, and yummy.
S - One bartender was working when we were there and the service was good.
S - They were pouring four when we were there and also had IPA on cask. Very Good.
F - I gave this an N/A as they just have free hard pretzels with mustard. However, the mustard is awesome and available for sale. Good snack, but I can't really say they have food.
My only regret about going here is that we planned to go back to buy a growler and some mustard before we left but got back after they closed. But that's just a good excuse to visit again.

Late night Friday, wandering around Buxton. The neon din of Green Man draws you in.
Atmosphere: Like many of its brethren, Green Man is a garage. On entry, the bar sits to the right with a few scattered tables inside. The brewery is situated just beyond the bar. An putdoor patio is to the left of the garage. We grabbed a pint and sat on a sofa.
Quality: We walked by Green Man early in the afternoon, before it opened. That let us scope out the wooden bar. I liked the feel of the place and the mystery of night improved its feel.
Service: Bar service was fast and that was the limit of our interaction.
Selection: I like that Green Man focused on session beers during AVL beer week, the smaller ones are better to dig into. I went with an English dark mild, under 4% a true sessionable ale. Its darker base and light body were an excellent nightcap.
Food: N/A

I love this place. Truly one of the most genuine "Neighborhood Pub" type atmosphere in the city. This is the tasting room for Green Man Ales and the brew tanks are right there in front (and wrapping around you). There's only a handful of taps, which mostly serve Green Man, but there are usually a couple of host taps as well. I must say here as well that I love Green Man Ales. They don't brew that many options, but everything is great and is brewed in the style of a British brew house. The ESB is probably my favorite of that style. I graded for the food, although there isn't really any. What they do have are pretzels and the best mustard in town (Lusty Monk) and they shove it at you none-stop.

This place is a must visit on your Asheville brewery tour. I highly recommend the IPA and Rainmaker double IPA.The prices are very reasonable and they fill the growlers onsite for $10.00 and $20.00 for the Double IPA.The atmosphere was awesome and the staff friendly and very informative regarding the brews. They also serve pretzels with some of the best beer mustard I have ever tasted. They also sell containers of the mustard to go as well as T shirts and beer glasses.
My favorite brewery in Asheville by far.

We came very close to missing this great place on our trip to Asheville. With so many places to try it can be overwhelming. Do yourself a favor, and go here. If turned out to be our favorite tasting room for atmosphere, and vibe. The bartender was great and even though it was quite busy, made time for conversation. Also met the owner who was very friendly and welcoming.
They have a big garage door that was open during our visit, as well as an outdoor patio area. We were lucky enough to have seats open up at the bar right after we arrived.
We enjoyed the IPA, Pale Ale, and Rainmaker IIPA. All were excellent.
Call the tasting room to see if they are open early. We would have liked to know that before our trip, as the 4pm opening time is what held us back to start with. So glad we fit it in on our last day. We liked it so much we did not want to leave.
