Appearance: One word comes to mind when looking at this beer: strong. Its color is an unassuming nectarine red-brown, not terribly dark and quite transparent, but its small and fleeting head betrays lots of alcohol and not a lot of hops, while the very thick, sticky "legs" on the inside of my snifter betray a lot of residual sugars and a beefy malt body.
Smell: Fruit and spice - apples, rum-soaked raisins, dates, cloves - with a slight toffee sweetness from the malts, a citric-sweet hint of cola, and a fuzzy impression of herbal (sage?) hops. Not bad smelling at all, but it lacks the punch I expect from a good barleywine.
Taste: Not as sweet as expected but still quite satisfyingly malty, definitely an old school barleywine. Bright fruit flavors, especially apple and lime come on strong and combine with a darker, brown sugary character and a hint of vanilla to really give the impression of cola - or maybe root beer. The alcohol presence comes through as a mix of rum and whiskey flavors, while hops lend a slightly tangy herbal/lemon zesty bite. Malty and strong but adequately spiced and balanced by alcohol and hops. Finish is burnt bread bitterness followed by a juicy tangy citric sweetness.
Mouthfeel: Very good, soft and just shy of full-bodied, with a pleasant sharpness to it. Not dry by any means, but not overly thick and syrupy.
Drinkability: This is a pretty tasty barleywine, though slightly underwhelming. Very-the-books and perhaps a bit too light for the style, but a pleasant sipper nonetheless.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle I brought back from a Kyoto trip, into the test glass, 2016 vintage.
A - Dark Tan in color, a thin cap is quick to leave. Carbonation wanders up he glasses edge to feed a thin ring of proof.
S - Big barley presence interestingly mated up with a beautiful floral thread, also get some kumquat, in there as well, as it warms there is some blond tobacco, and rich earthy element that is exquisite.
T - Surprisingly, this has a delightful delicate fruit touch, again kumquat, then more English Barleywine elements, toffee, some caramel, cigar wrap tobacco. all balanced quite well
M - Medium on the palate, with a semi sweet start, then a nice wave of tart touches down, to be washed out quickly by the traditional sweet slick Barleywine tradition.
O - I wish I had purchased another bottle! This is a very good barleywine with all the traditional elements , I love the kiss of fruitiness, assumed from the hops/yeast used. as no fruit is mentioned, A really nice and well executed offering.

Beer review from BA Mag Sep 2007.
2005 Vintage.
We've really gotta get our asses over to Japan and behold for ourselves their growing passion for craft beer. One day. In the meantime, at least we have this "vintage select" offering from Daisen G Beer.
Hazy amber-copper center, with a creamy, slightly off-white head dissipating to a fine lace. Musty aroma, like aging apples in a cellar, and a hint of sherry oxidation mixes in with some fruity esters. Hits the palate and creams up with tight, prickly carbonation. Silky-smooth and fluffy, but with a medium-bodied malty and syrupy base that builds underneath. Rather sugary and fruity, with black currant, dried apricots, caramel, sweet blood oranges and a peppery alcohol--combined, it's a bit brandy-like. Sherry, and a touch of paper. Oily feel on the palate, infused with hop leaf characters and tannins. Dry in the finish, with some toasty sweet malt residuals and a touch of toffee.
This one leans more toward an English Barleywine vs. an American one, mainly due to its fruity focus and toned-down hop profile. We have nothing to compare it to, as this is our first Japanese-brewed example; but even with two years of aging this is a most complex and worthy brew.

On tap at Qbrick in Osaka. Poured with absolutely no head giving it a very much wine like appearance. Even for the style a little head would've been nice. Deep maroon red body. Soft dried fruits and malty sweetness on the nose. On the palate, the alcohol is well hidden and gives a full bodied slightly alcohol sweet pleasantness. No overt hop flavours or bitterness. Decent.
