Served in a weizen glass at the brewpub.
Just like I like my women... Anyway, this stuff pours a clear sienna topped by over a finger of off-white foam. The nose comprises orange zest, sweet toffee, clove, and light banana peel. The taste brings in more of the same, with a bit more clove, and hints of light black pepper, cinnamon, and vanilla bean coming in for some added complexity. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation, a sorta/kinda grainy feel, and a dry finish. Overall, a nice d-weizen, one that doesn't overdo it on the yeast character, but also maintains a nice level of spice and whatnot. Good times.

In the world of Dunkelweiss, yeast is king. I wasn't able to detect too much of the German hefe yeast that I so desired. A bit muted but a tasty beer nonetheless. The dark malts were not too pronounced, almost true to a German Warsteiner in that both are black without tasting very black at all. I was looking for a little more yeasty, dark malt, wheatiness from this beer. An appoachable beer for the style.

Had on tap at Piece, served in a 12 oz. goblet/tulip hybrid looking glass.
A: Pours a still dark brown with a small off white head that recedes quickly. Not the prettiest looking beer in the world.
S: I'm just getting some yeasty and solid wheat notes in the nose. A slight spice of clove.
T: The taste reaffirms the nose. Same yeast and wheat notes, banana and bubblegum with a touch of clove and a little malt.
M: Prickly carbonation with a medium body. Easy to drink.
O: Pretty standard IMO. There was nothing that stood out, but it didn't falter in any way besides the look.

Served on tap at Piece.
A- a cloudy brown, with a tan head about a half inch. No lacing.
S- lots of bananas and wheat, with some clove spice. Good smell.
T- confirmed by the smell, mostly wheat and bananas. The taste is nice and yeasty too, but it gets a little cloying about half way down. The feel is lighter than I would have liked.
O- not a bad beer, solid rendition of a style we don't see everyday.

This is there GABF award winning beer, never on time while there, glad I finally got to tick this... Pours an ass ugly murky brown sewage water mess. A very light tan head, ok retention but no lacing... The aroma is pretty nice, tons of clove dominate, with some molasses... The taste is mostly banana, at first interesting but then it gets annoying, however the light sweetness makes it incredibly drinkable. This is very hearty, hints of roasted grain, smooth finish.
Certainly not award worthy but one of their better beers, very drinkable, if not a touch sweet.

The appearance resembled brown muddy water.
I didn't know the style when I ordered it; I picked it at random. The appearance resembled brown muddy water. The aroma was on the subtle side. It had a roasted wheat smell which showed in the flavor.
Like the aroma, the flavor had a roasted wheat/grain taste. There was a real earthy taste that floated throughout each drink. It also had an allspice flavor that lingered in the background.
Overall: loved it! It had a smooth texture that enhanced the subtly of the flavors. I would definitely have it again or take some home in a growler.

Piece Brewery Dark-n-Curvy Dunkelweizen served on tap
Appearance: Small head with good lacing. Dark brown and cloudy.
There is a subdued wheat smell, but the taste contains a much greater wheat flavor. There is also a slight nut flavor in the malts.
It's a good dark wheat to enjoy in a session.

From tap at the brewpub poured into a traditional weizen glass. Pours a cloudy light brown with a quickly disappearing head with some lace. Smells of yeast, citrus and malt. Taste is similar to the aroma but a little more wheat/yeast spice than what was found in the nose. Very fresh tasting and slightly effervescent with full body mouth feel. Too drinkable, very refreshing. I can see why this is an award winning beer.

Appearance: Murky brown color with a thick, mousse-like off-white head.
Smell: Cloves and fruity esters (mostly banana).
Taste: Consistent with the smell, mostly cloves and banana. The grainy flavor of the wheat nicely complements the caramel malts.
Mouthfeel & Drinkability: Medium bodied. The wheat and yeast give it a creamy fullness. A very refreshing dunkelweizen.

Purchased a growler yesterday afternoon and shared last night with a couple of friends. Review written from notes. My first of the style.
Poured into weizen glass. 2 inches of solid head. color is a murky light brown. hazy.
smell is strong out of the growler but weaker from the beer in my glass and gets weaker as time passes. i get banana, clove, citrus, and sugary malt with some "yeasty"/earthy smells as well.
taste is extension of the aroma but better and of course stronger.
mouth feel is smooth with slightly above medium body. despite the good body to this beer it doesn't seem to take up much stomach space. i ate alot while drinking probably about 24 oz. the taste is delicious but possibly easy to over power with food. for piece, this is a win. and for the style, I'm going to have to try more of these but i think i'm a fan.

On-tap poured into tall weizen glass.
A: Bartender was busy as hell but still managed to make two good pours into the glasses I bought. Two inches of head at the top of a tall 22 oz. weizen glass. Dark amber beer that seemed to faintly glow through the light.
S: Smell was slightly underwhelming. Not too much to talk about here...
T: No bitterness to speak of with very slight hints of cloves and bananas. Not yeasty at all, either.
M: Nice carbonation. Crisp but not too bubbly.
D: I could down three of these easily and call it a night. Great taste and not too filling. (I ate half of a huge pizza after one of these and could have ordered another beer.)
Additional Notes: Picked up a growler to-go and it almost tastes as good from a growler as it does on-tap. Good carbonation and a crisp feel.

I had this one on tap at the Piece pub on 2/21/2009.
A= This dunkel poured a murky cola-brown color, with pretty much zero head.
S= Smell was muted banana bread and clove.
T= Like the smell, this one was malty and showed all of the appropriate banana and clove notes one would expect. Slight spice near the sweet finish.
MF= Medium body with a slick and undercarbonated feel. I would have liked about twice as much crispness here.
D= Pretty drinkable despite the few less than perfect aspects. I could drink a couple of these in a sitting for sure.

Had on tap today at Piece. Served into a tall weizen glass.
Appearance was a murky brown color, with no head whatsoever. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get a head to form. Whoever was bartending was a complete idiot.
Aroma was mild due to having no head but I picked up some banana esters, breadiness, and some caramel sweetness, with a slight spicy clove character.
Taste was much better than the look and smell. Some nice malt character up front with caramel and bread, followed by the banana in the middle and the cloves merging in a spicy yet still sweet finish.
Mouthfeel was altered again by having less than ideal carbonation from a shitty pour. It came across way too thick and was lacking the effervescence that this style should have.
I would like to try this one again with a proper pour as I thought it was a damn good tasting Dunkelweizen, all those bad things aside.

i'm not a hop head for the american style IPA. if you are this is your brew pub.
noted at about 5.5-6 percent alcohol. was told this was a particulary good batch in late june/early july of this year. the color is a diluted dark amber. its dark but in no way opaque. fruit ester nose, wheat, malt and light funk. taste coincides with the banana esters and wheat intermeshed with malt. strange yet interest funk at the end. woods, leathery malt, and ripe banana. very prominity taste hangs on the palate in this strange musk. now that i think about it is sort of has a doppellbock style to it this time around.
had it again about 6 month later and it didn't have as many esters as it did chocolate. more so even than the caramel aroma.

Appearance: Like every beer I drank that night, it came to me with no head at all, I had to come back to my neighborhood to a pool hall to find a proper pour. Nice color though.
Smell: Weak caramel, wheat sweetness, rum. Should have been better. Again weak head.
Taste: The taste was delicious, reminiscent of an Aventinus only a little watery, and less complex, more rum and sweet malt and not much else.
Mouthfeel: A little thin, but it's my first example of the style.
Drinkability: This is milder than the weizenbock I know and love, but flavorful, very high on the session scale.

on tap at the brewpub
appearance: served in a large dunkel glass, brunette body with a beige cap and minimal retention, rather murky
smell: dark wheats, fig, clove and banana
taste: the aromas come through strong in the flavor as well - especially the banana and clove...there are also notes of cola and honey which contribute to a silky smooth feel. its a nice drinkable dunkel, but its not 100% true to style
mouthfeel: very smooth
drinkability: filling but ok

Poured from a 64oz growler into two pint glasses. Thanks to HeatherAnn for the assist!
A: Settles into the glass a beautiful looking murky and cloudy golden brown. Looks like iced tea or apple cider. Small creamy head that leaves a tiny amount of lace.
S: Nice aromas of clove, citrus, nuts, bubblegum, banana, and (as it warms) caramel.
T: See above. The more I drink of this the more toasted malt, sweet spice, sour grain, and mild hoppiness begin to emerge.
M: Spicy, prickly, and sticky. Long lasting finish with big clove/spice/bubblegum flavors stuck right in the middle of it.
D: Sweet, spicy, and slightly tart-this is very refreshing. Heather says this is very sessionable. Come on summer!

served in a weizen glass, this was a deep ruby brown with an off-white head. lacing was ridiculously thick and clingy. smell was of dark roasted malts hiding some floral notes. this had just a hint of sweetness up front and finshed crisp and clean. hop presence is more significant than typical for the style but not overbearing. the roastiness of the malts was pronounced. mouthfeel was light/medium. a very sessionable brew.

Dark & Curvy poured from the growler a hazed Long Island Iced Tea color with caramel highlights when backlit. The head was short-lived fizzy tan foam that fell to a thin halo-like ring. The lacing was minimal.
The smell was big bready yeast, wheaty grain, lemon citrus, spicy cloves, banana oil with bubblegum phenolics and a distinctive pleasant smoky character. As the brew warmed a caramel sweetness was noted.
The taste followed the smell fairly well, but with a grainy sharpness. There was a crisp, moderately active carbonation and a medium body that came across with a crisp mouthfeel.
My past visits to Piece have taught me what a master brewer can do with a Hefe Wiezen. Their Top Heavy has no equal in my experience. I was anticipating another stellar offering in Dark & Curvy.
I will visit Piece again soon to review the on-tap version and chat with the brewer.
