Sampled at the Cambridge Beer Festival 2008

Appearance: opaque brown, largish bubbles, little lace

Smell: slight vegetal note, burnt malt, little distinct coffee or cocoa aroma

Taste: porter-ish, nondistinct and lackluster. disappointing considering the great name.

Mouthfeel: full body

Drinkability: not bad, but a bit boozy, especially as it warmed

Thanks to RobBeer for bringing this beer all the way to Japan.

A - pitch black body iwth brown espresso crema head.
S - Simple roasted wood and malt aroma
T - Tar roasted malt, very dry, bitterness which does not show up until the finish.
M - Low carbonation, kinda flat.
D - Upon opening, the beer turned into a geyser. I lost about a fifth of the bottle. If a fifth of the bottle is undrinkable, that hurts drinkability.

Purchased at the OnlyFineBeer shop, Chelmsford on 12/07/06. Just like several other bottles obtained there, this one had past the BB date upon purchase (Jan. 2006), Batch No. CBB 021 104. The beer label has an incredibly long name for this beer, and says the ingredients include "the Blood of the Bourgeoisie, the Sweat of the Proletariat, and the Tears of the Capitalists". Lots of useless info., I ponder. Or, it takes a much more knowledgeable person in the field of British social history to decifer these codes, I reckon?? Don't really care, I just wanna try the beer. Served cool in a large Burgundy bulb wine glass.

A: the beer almost bursts out as soon as I open it, yet I manage to pour it all into the glass without wasting a single drop (hooray!!); it ends up a very effervescent and huge tan frothy head, on top of a dark brownish body and abundant fizziness. The rocky head settles relatively fast, leaving fine sheets of lacing behind.
S: I totally agree with what Greecard observed, a funky note of rought yeasts poured into the nostrils upfront, a bit like Fantome Circus that I tried several weeks ago... in addition, a sour-sweet fruity (pear+plum) and woody edge of an old ale, and a cocoa like aromatic dark maltiness both are quite assertive; a creamy scent of flower perfume and an intense edge of musk expand in the air after a good swirl. Overall not quite like an Imperial Russian Stout, but like an Old Ale to me.
T: roughly-textured, slightly astringently tartly-sweet dark fruits and a winey flavour dominate... buttressed simultaneously by a chewy, tannic, almost woody mouthfeel of old yeasts and flaky hops, as well as a mildly roasty, dryish bitterness of black malts like a robust Mild, felt strongly esp. at the back of the tongue--a bit like the aftertaste of roast black tea plus Old Ale. A quiet flow of warming alc. creeps down the throat, pretty soothing in the finish.
M&D: the subtly tannic and tangy mouthfeel accompanies the flatly-textured fruity maltiness throughout. With nice support of fine fizziness, the beer tastes much lighter in body than it smells like~~ I have a weird feeling that it HAS indeed past the prime, yet the result turns out a pleasant surprise like being another mixed style of beer, i.e. robust Mild+Old Ale+funky dark Saison+a dash of red wine... an interesting beer well worth a try. If one could find a bottle within the BBE date, the better!...although it'd perhaps taste quite different from this bottle.

Batch # CBB 021104...

Appearance: deep dark brown, medium layer of spongey tan foam that compacts to an even cap, slight haze

Aroma: dark muscovado sugar, roast, alcohol, caramelly malt, slight "Belgian" character

Flavor: dryish malt base, subdued roastiness (more dark-grainy, than roasty), alcohol, passion fruit, hop leaves, yeast, finishes dry with a surprisingly clean aftertaste for a stout

Mouthfeel: full body, lively carbonation, slight alcohol warmth, somewhat "crisp" (not heavy)

Other comments: I'm not sure if there was some "funk" in this batch, but it gushed when I opened it and it definitely has a slight De Dolle Brouwers twinge to it. I love De Dolle's beers, so that's definitely a good thing! Just not sure it was meant to be like that. It's a really good beer, but not really an Imp stout in my view.
