FYI, bottle version of Rigor Mortis Abt is 10.5% alcohol per volume.

Pours a modest head that dies to a single layer of fine bubbles. Surprisingly, it leaves a generous level of lace. The color of the brew is muddy brown, much like a darker iced tea.

Strong Belgian yeast in the nose. Toffee and caramel are the predominant malt aromas. No notable hop. Touch of Confectioner Sugar.

A sweet beer. Noticeably potent and very full bodied, almost as if an unfermented wort was blended in. Almost candy like in the taste. The swallow features a spritzy bitterness that fades quickly to the mouth numbing alcohol content, which is overpowering in the aftertaste.

Poured into a chalice a nice cloudy grapish color, nice carbonation, nice little fizzy tan head, with some nice small islands, and sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, lots of nice dark fruit notes, and some caramel. The taste is sweet, malty, nice touch of raisins, figs, grapes, plums. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a pretty nice brew, glad to have had a chance to try it. Thanks Carl.

Pours a three finger off-white head that fades quickly leaving traces of lace. Cloudy amber color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Brown sugar nose. Flavor is brown sugar and molasses but it is well balanced. Nice brown (that's what the label says). Label has a 10.5% ABV. Pricey at $6.99 for a 11.5oz bottle from Beverage Warehouse Winooski, VT.

Appears a dark chestnut with a glowing auburn edge and an off white cap that slowly fades into a gentle cap that never goes away. Scattered bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of rum soaked prunes, raisins, brown sugar, vanilla, and a touch of spice like nutmeg and cinnamon.
Taste is of the aromas with a bitter cocoa bite that lingers. Spices highlighted by nutmeg hits the palate with rum soaked raisins.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, warming, and semi dry with nutmeg.

On tap at Volo for Cask Days 2008. I had some bottles a couple years ago at the brewpub but never reviewed them then.

Pours a clear reddish orange, ruddy, huge and thick off white head forms, drops a ton of lace, great retention, settles to a solid layer. Smell is neat, quite sweet, caramel, apples and pears, bread, yeast, peppery spice, brown sugar, alcohol, light fruit, pretty big aroma. Taste is similar, sweet up front, honey and caramel, bit of fruit, yeast, pepper, bread, apple pie and cinnamon, alcohol comes through but isn't overpowering. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with medium carbonation, some warmth from the alcohol but altogether pretty smooth for the ABV. A nice quad, I could drink this stuff on a regular basis.

Dirty raisin and brown colored beer with almost no head on it. Aroma was alcohol soaked raisins and figs. Just really boozy and for some reason bitter, although I guess its not that strange, I come across a lot of dark strong ales with the dark fruit thing with bitterness.

A mild amount of chocolate, but this beer is just like fermented pruno from underneath a jail bunk. Most of what I taste is just hot heat. Nothing easy drinking about it. There's a little bit of roasted malt mouthfeel to it, but again, everything is just overpowered by the alcohol heat. Carbonation is weak on this one, letting the heat just tear your mouth up like you're a girl down on her luck in Van Nuys who came across a couple guys in the biz and a camera crew. I can't tell if its the yeast flavor or the spicing, but it isn't complimentary either, but it is at least a break from the alcohol.

Paying $5 a bottle for this hurts. Wouldn't pay $5 for a 6 pack of it in the future.

Taken in 'La Trappe' San Fransisco on 6 Feb 2013. The basement is very dark (where we sat anyway), so I had trouble seeing the true colour of the beer: it looked dark brown though. The bottle label being dark also was almost unseeable too, which is a shame because the art work is lovely.

The smell told me however I had a great beer in front of me, even if I couldn't see it too well. Malty molasses and rich fruit esters filled my nose and I couldn't wait to taste it.

The richness of the flavours exploded in my mouth, sweet malty molasses (like the aroma) with hints of toffee, caramel and chocolate. Add dark fruit and yeastiness into the mix and you have a very tasty beer indeed.

Full bodied and rich from the first sip, overall an excellent beer.

Pours a lovely slightly cloudy, low flocculated brown red. Head is very finely bubbled, a lovely yellow-beige colour. Minimal lacing, but the body is very thick and heavy. I love that it has such robust carbonation though. It looks great when swirled. Very nice indeed.

Ooh, lovely Belgian yeast notes on the nose, wonderfully mixed with a pleasant spice and the tantalising hint of big boozy characters on the palate. Not a huge amount of sweetness promised, but there's some very pleasant true Abbey Ale characters to it.

Taste is, to be fair, a little disappointing. Minimal sweetness and surprisingly little body, so the full breadth of the palate is not really used. What's there is a pleasant spice and a slightly dusty and boozy bitterness on the back palate. Ashy finish. I'm tempted to say it's a bit old, and perhaps a touch oxidised, but that's not really the characters I'm getting.

Decent enough, but I was underwhelmed after taking a sip. Don't get me wrong, it's still a very good beer, but it feels like it's lacking for the style.

It's a quad! On to the beer:

Glub glub goes the beer into a snifter. Chocolate brown colored in the glass, some head retention and a little bit of lacing sticking around. The nose is nice; dry powdery cocoa, pears, a spicy pinch of alcohol. It still seems a little more could come out.

More of it comes out in the mouth. Maybe it's the soft yeast bringing grape/raisin notes to my palate to pair with the unsweetened chocolate and pear. Dry astringent malt settles in as the beer dries up on the palate. It's a beer you can chew on, which I like, though carbonation can get prickly, which I prefer in this case that it didn't. Much of the 10.5% ABV is hidden, and you'll feel it warm your tummy.

Inviting beer. Not too sweet or sugary with the Belgian yeast doing some of the work. Good no matter where it's brewed.

Thanks Snojerk321! Pours murky and tawny with a creamy white head. This label is grim as hell. Fantastic artwork.

The aroma is bready and yeasty. Notes of black pepper and other spices are present, as well as some faint metallic notes and some toffee. Dark fruits are evident, as well as some brown sugar.

The flavor is yeasty and bready, with notes of toffee and caramel. A low level of earthy hop bitterness is present. There's an interesting note of overripe banana. The flavor is quite boozy and sweet, and it finishes that way.

Medium bodied with a nice medium level of carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel.

It looks like there's enough sludge at the bottom of the bottle to fix the cocking in my bathroom and, while I seem to have kept most of it out of the glass, I suspect some of it might be responsible for dimming the tone on this otherwise ember-y mahogany beer; the highlights are snuffed out by a most gloomy auburn complexion. As can be anticipated for a beer this strength, its head is not abundant; it is, however, plainly visible.

The bouquet, if you have the stomach to get past the initial lick of alcohol, is luxuriantly fruity and not badly equipped in the malt department either. It has both the strength and complexity of a good tawny-port and beyond the obvious brown malts and dried fruits, exact flavours can be challenging to pick out. Part of that is its intricacy, the other part is the alcohol which is as excitable as a young child (and every bit as blunt too).

It seems like someone at the brewery pulled that prank where they didn't screw the lid of the sugar shaker on tightly so when the next guy went to pour from it all the sugar just dumped out. Except in this case, instead of ordering another coffee (or beer, as it were) they got lazy and just left it. This should lead to fantastic results in the long term, but fresh it does little but distract from flavour and detract from drinkability.

Likewise, while the alcohol should eventually tire itself out, for the time being, it's firing on all cylinders. Once again, this creates a slight distraction from flavour and a minor detraction from drinkability. Fortunately, on the former point, there are traces of molasses and anise, fig puree, stewed plums and all other kinds of spicy red and intense black fruits, toffee and walnut. In other words, this has all kinds of tasty stuff about it.

Funny that a beer named Rigor Mortis should be such a stiff drink. Rigor Mortis ABT doesn't quite compare to its Belgian counterparts but it does imitate them well. If you have any bottles in your possession I suggest you find them a cool, dark place and let them just be for a couple of years; my guess is they'll come back a much better beer, but doubtfully one that will ever be confused as belonging to Belgium's great Trappist monasteries.

11.5 fl oz brown glass with standard pressure cap served into a Guinness goblet in me gaff in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are quite high given the brewery and style.

Served refrigerator cold and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a half finger head of slight cream, decent thickness, and okay retention. Colour is a nontransparent dark caramel-copper. No yeast particles are visible.

Sm: Biscuity caramelized dark malts, cream, cherry and plum fruit esters, spices, brown sugar, and caramel. A fairly complex moderate strength aroma.

T: More malty and sugar-laden than expected, with notable caramelization. Raisin notes. Awkward for a quadrupel. The fruit esters get buried beneath the overwhelming malt layer. Caramelized malts comprise the foundation. No yeast or alcohol comes through. The brown sugar is overdone. Complex but poorly balanced. Strangely built for the style. Not really subtle at all.

Mf: Smooth and wet, with some coarseness from the sugar. The thickness is off but not in an extreme way. Adequately carbonated. Suits the flavour profile okay I guess, but it's certainly not tailored to it.

Dr: Drinkable but unremarkable. Boring for the style. An awkward combination of a brown ale and a quad that never quite sits right. Hides its ABV well. I wouldn't get it again, but it's decently priced for what it is. I wouldn't recommend it to friends. I can see where aging might help it.

Pours a dark brown color with a thick head into my Piraat glass. Nice presentation with lacing and all.

Aroma is full of raisin and faint apple in the nose. Malt sweetness stands out as well.

Taste is strong and warm with raisin, caramel and faint apple flavors upfront. Quite tasty.

Mouthfeel is full of the above flavors and the warmth from the alcohol is quite apparent as it coats the throat. Carbonation is a bit high but doesn't detract too much.

Needs some aging but otherwise, an enjoyable example of the style that can only get better with a bit of age.

12oz brown bottle with a twisti-off cap. Poured into a goblet, this brew appears a color of deep mahogany with a creamy finger of tan froth. The cap dissolves to a thin lace atop and leaves some patches of lace sticking to the glass. I wish I would have been more careful with the pour. I probably only should have poured 8 ounces into my glass because as I got closer to the bottom a rush of sediment plopped in. The yeast has covered the glass and is stuck with thick spackle-like chunks throughout the entire solution. When held to the light, you can hardly see through the pieces of yeast but you see some faint redness through the brown shades.

The smell of this brew is very familiar with a pleasing scent of dark malty sugars that come across like candy sugar, figs, plums, raisins and toffee. There is a light herbal touch of hops that bring forth almost an earthy aspect that keeps the onslaught of sweetness in check. The yeast expresses itself with a mild clove and almost peppery touch that takes this nose off in a different direction that is enjoyable.

The taste has creamy sweetness of toffee mixed with candy sugar and an herbal hop component to contrast. There is quite a bold alcohol presence not only in flavor but with an immediate rush of alcohol down the back of the throat and all the way into the stomach. It leaves an aftertaste in the mouth that is lightly nutty with more focus going back to the sweetness that is like dark fruits mixed with sugary alcohol almost like molasses but not as dark/burnt. This is one of the few times where I actually enjoyed the brew much more while it was cold. Once it gets warmer, the alcohol comes out in full force and gets a bit distracting with a fusel/solvent kick that is not hidden behind the solid malt backing at all.

This is a full bodied brew that is creamy and full in the feel. It has a moderate amount of carbonation and overall is a very well put together take on the style. This initial reaction to this brew based soley on the aroma is wow, this is going to be a sickeningly sweet mess. But after the first sip, you are pleasantly caught off guard. Well done. I have no have many offerings from Dieu du Ceil but the ones I have had were quite enjoyable. Certainly worth a try.

The brewer lists this one as a quad, and I agree it's closer to that style.

A: Deep copper-bronze with a light tan head. Some retention, excellent lacing.

S: Dark fruit, cotton candy fruity esters, toffee.

T: Too much residual sweetness upfront. Dark toffee, dark fruit, earthy citrus, light spicing, balanced bitterness, alcohol is well-hidden. It has some good flavour, but it doesn't measure up to the monks brews.

M: I just can't get over the residual sweetness in this one. A Belgian should be drier & more digestible.

D: Very approachable for its weight, but I couldn't drink much.

Pours a murky, murky brown with an okay head that fades to a ring. In the nose there are nice Belgian yeast notes of banana, clove, coriander. A touch chalky and bready. The taste has very nice fruit and a bit of breadiness with a long finish that has a nice combination of bitterness, sweetness, and spice. Nice notes of banana, clove, pear, and spicebox. Sweet, bready, and thick in the mouth. Overall, pretty nice.

12oz pulled from the fridge after the weekend tasting.. I am just wanting one beer while taking care of the wife's flowers...

deep dark brown clear... 1/2" tan head.. no lacing..

big boozy.. caramel and raisins.. clove phenols run pretty heavy.. some burnt sugar...

Flavor leans heavy on the plum esters... caramel and plenty of booze burn.. makes me think of young Rochefort 10.... a bit too sweet for my palate..

Mouthfeel seems too carbonated...

Nice brew ... I would buy these for sure.. but I would put them down for at least six months...

Pours a dark, semi-transparent mahogany with a fairly thick if not persistent beige head. Aroma is not strong but fruity and yeasty with malt underpinnings, rather inviting. Flavor is stronger than the aroma, malty and yeasty with a fruity and nutty hints and just a touch of spice. Texture is quite rough and fizzy, leaving a tart and nippy finish.

Poured into a goblet, Rigor Mortis ABT is dark ruddy brown with a small, off-white head that leaves light lace.

Smell is simple, classic sweet quad, brown sugar with some spice ad clean alcoholic heat.

Taste is also strait on, very spicy esters, peppery. Moderate phenols, fairly smooth, not very complex but very well executed.

Mouthfeel is dry, spicy, medium-light bodied, reasonably digestible.

Drinkability is pretty good, a solid quad, but with room for improvement. Overpriced, especially since I live on the same continent.

A: Poured from a bottle to a tulip glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick consistency. There was a fairly large-sized, foamy head that didn't stick around that long. Good lacing.

S: Smelled of malt, spices, sweets and maybe a little fruit.

T: A nice, if a little unfocused taste of malt, spices, apples, caramel and possibly a little toffee. A solid flavor.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

D: A drinkable version of a Belgian quad.

Pours a hazy brown-ish to orange-ish color with a light tan head. In the aroma, mellow caramel with a note of chocolate. In the taste, sweet, malty caramel with a chocolate like end. A small bite and a a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry caramel, with a hint of cocoa in the aftertaste. Hides the 10%, lack of nose, a small dry alcohol note in the end, and nice flavors of caramel and chocolate.

11.2oz bottle poured into a snifter.

Pours a murky reddish brown with a small creamy beige head that sticks around as a cap and leaves some delicate lacing.

The aroma is very sweet, with dark fruits, caramel and overarching Belgian yeast presence that offers a bit of spiciness in the nose.

The taste is extremely sweet with candi sugar and dark fruits dominating. There is some chocolate noticeable in the taste that I could detect in the nose and the finish has an alcohol burn that takes a while to notice. The spiciness of the yeast really comes out as well.

This is a fairly full-bodied beer, very smooth and complete coats the palate with sweetness which lingers for a long time.

I'm highly impressed with this beer and think it is a great representation of the style, leaning heavily to the sweeter side of things. Big fan.

Poured chilled from the 12oz into a Unibroue tulip.

A - A turbid caramel/med brown w/ bronze highlights and yeast speckles accenting the appearance of the brew. The ale has a thin ecru cap of approx 1/2 inch w/ pin sized bead. The lace dots the glass on the inside and a half sheet of lace clings to the tulip. The retention is decent for such a high abv

S - The aroma has a vibrant raisin aroma w/ full notes of toffee and candy sugar w/ relatively high molasses content. The nose does produce pretty strong alcohol odor also which is fusel and a mild tropical/ripe banana note w/ toasted malt complements

M - The feel is woody w/ strong effervescence and full body w/ hints of tannins- stone fruit-like acid and strong alcohol influence w/ mild creamy yeasty aspect too from bottle conditioning

T - The flavor of the quad is interesting while it has an alcoholic raisn bran quality w/ toasty malt and caramelly flavors. There is an earthy vanilla note w/ slight woodiness and light spice. The quad is odd to me because at times it has a dubbel like smooth citrus coffe-like aspect and subtle nutmeg notes w/ mild pepper and others it hits the palate with alcohol and burnt sugar flavors

D - A big 'Abbey Brown' - more like a quad drinkability wise, but shares a lot with dubbel in the sense that it has plenty of creamy raisiny toasty, less roasty flavor. I was certainly happy to share this and could probably enjoy several with ease -another great beer from Brasserie Dieu du ciel

11.5oz bottle purchased in Columbus for $4.99, poured into an Achel glass. The beer is a turgid rust color, with a thin layer of dark tan foam comprised of very fine bubbles, some dry lacing onto the glass. The smell is very quad-y, esters and ethanol and sweet malt aromas. A little reminiscent of St Bernardus 12 but maybe threatening to be more alcoholic. Same with the taste, a very hot St Bernadus ABT 12 is the best description. That's not bad as St Bernardus is one of my all-time favorites, but St Bernardus IS cheaper... and less hot...

The body is medium-thick, a little chewy, a nice substantial base for such a substantial flavor. Definitely a sipper, my throat is burning a little, like I'm pounding a weak liqueur.

The colour is brown; the liquid is a little cloudy. The finger thick compact off-white head leaves some lacing.

The smell is very Belgian: Yeast, brown sugar, spices, dried fruits, some sourness and a hint of fresh plums. A bit too neutral for a quad, I think.

The taste is stronger than the smell. Mellow, matured notes of dried apricots, raisins and apples. Some bitter notes and yeasty notes. Fruity esters and some mild chemical phenols (turpentine, oil colour). The aftertaste is somewhat sweet with dry fruity flavours of raisins and apricots. Some clean bitter flavours and a touch of alcohol in the finish.

The carbonation is quite strong. Large bubbles. The liquid is a bit light, yet it is a bit sticky.
