Great restaurant right outside of my hometown. Real comfortable atmosphere, dim lighting, all wood and stone interior, like eating in a log cabin. Three places to dine, a basment (which is probably my favorite), main floor including a lounge, and an upstairs. The service is always good, even though the place is packed at all times haha there's always somewhere to sit and the waits are always bearable. The brew selection in this place is fantastic with about 17 drafts and over 30 different bottles to choose from (Including there Belgium beers for two menu.) Ontop of there great beer selection the food there is fantastic. Great selections from beef to poultry and of course fish. But don't go there and not try there famous "dirt" wings. They are IMO the best wings i've ever had, whenever I go there i always get a bucket to go they're that good. Overall if your in the area or just looking for some good brews and exceptional food. This is the place.

What a great place. A decent line up of taps and bottles, only a few rotate but they seem to put on some good stuff that go with the seasons. This really really old building creates a great atmosphere that fits well with chilling at the pub and sitting down for dinner. Location is a good spot for me, because its right across from the movie theater so you can get a few pints then go across the street for a movie.
Last time I went I got a flying dog doggie style ale and a titan IPA that were excellent and fresh. Their glassware consists of only big dimpled mugs, which are really interesting and fitting for just about any beer they had there. Better than just straight sided pints. I also got a beer blend called chocolate covered apricot, which is a blend of young's double chocolate stout and magic hat #9. One of the most interesting black and tans I've ever had, and a really nice dessert. They have a whole menu of about ten different draft blends/black and tans which rotate from time to time.
Service in the small bar area was very attentive. Beer knowledge was acceptable, they aren't going to get into a beer conversation with you, but this is not a "beer geek" type bar. The bartender did have suggestions for their beer blends.
The chicken wings were the best I've ever had. I got honey bbq "dirt style", which means they fry them twice. This is the way you need to order the wings. They had a big burnt meat flavor while still being tender, really sweet, and juicy. Yum. Haven't gotten around to entrees here yet, but these wings are good enough for me any time I go.
Overall, this is a great place to get some good beer, great pub food, and an old pub atmosphere.

Located in Plainville, which is not far from Hartford, CT.
This restaurant and bar has been around for over 200 years as mentioned by other reviewers, so the place has plenty of character and seems to get a good amount of traffic. Some couples, some friends and some solo diners/drinkers of all ages seem to make up the mix of their clientele. The carry Ten Penny, Guinness, Palm, Bud Light, Flying Dog Doggie Style, Sam Cherry Wheat and some others on tap. For bottles, they carry opa-opa ipa, kona wheat, anchor steam summer and some more. As far as food, they carry the typical pub grub. I enjoyed their "dirt wings" very much and recommend them, their burgers and sandwiches looked tasty as well. This place happened to be near a business meeting and I am glad that I had the opportunity to check it out.

This place has been in existance for 218 years (198 of them as Cooke's Taverne)
I have eaten ther 6 times and have yet to be disappointed with either the meal or the service, the selection isn't wide but it varies seasonally.
The Ambiance of eating and drinking in an old stage coach rest stop is just plain fun!!!
Stop in, have the cheddar and ale soup, prime rib and a tap beer you'll go away satisfied with a doggie bag, because you can't eat a whole meal !!!
I recommend this place top anyone within an hour's drive to Plainville Ct.
It's worth driving an hour for the freindly expert wait staff and the exceptional food.

I Went Here For The First Time This Past Spring To Watch The NCAA Tournament And Have A Few Beers. The Pub Here Isn't Exactly A Great Beer Bar But Not So Bad Considering The Local Choices Are Few. All We Ate Were A Ton Of Wings And They Were Very Good, Advertized As Best In Connecticut (the "dirt Variety Is Very Tastey Though Not Terribly Hot/spicey). The Beer Selection Was Pretty Decent And The Number Of Taps Was Better Than Most But Nothing Real Unusual By Today's Standards. They Had Several Nice Choices For Those Of Us Who Like The More Challenging "flavors" And Higher Alcohol Contents. A Couple Pretty Obscure Ones So I Was Happy. I Have To Say That The Service Was Actually Pretty Impressive In The Pub Section. The Place Is Largely Dedicated To Restaurant Service But The Pub Section Is Good Sized And Was Busy. We Found A Table And Got Immediate And Regular Attention From A Friendly Waitress. Food And Beers Were Delivered Quickly. TV Viewing Was Good From Most Any Angle. Prices Are A Little High But Not So Unusual For The Area. One Of My Favorite Things About The Place Is The Atmosphere. It Appears To Be An 18th Century Sort Of Establishment (said To Date From 1789) With The Big Old Beams And Dark Lighting. Very Warm And Pleasant, Yet A Pretty Lively Crowd In The Pub. It Is Also Quite Convenient To I-84 (Crooked Street Exit). I'll Go Back Again. Enjoy!

I've been to J. Timothy's a couple of times previously and while the beer selection was above average for the area, I didn't think it merited a beerfly review. It seems that sometime in the last 6 months or so they've really done a lot to bolster their beer selection, which is now divided into two sections "The Usuals" and "The Winter Seasonals" for both draft and bottles. The Usuals, consisted of all the boring choices you'd expect from a place like this (BMC, Bass, Newcastle, Guiness, etc...). The Winter Seasonals though, were all very nice craft beers (On Tap: Spaten Optimator, Rogue Chocolate Stout, Boulder Never Summer Ale, Hooker IPA, Brooklyn Winter, Unibroue Trois Pistoles, and maybe 1-2 others). I didn't pay very much attention to the bottle list, but I do remember that the Winter Seasonals were all fairly solid craft beer choices, while The Usuals were typically uninspiring. Both my Chocolate Stout and Never Summer Ale tasted very fresh and were served in dimpled mugs.
I love the atmosphere in this place with all the fireplaces and old woodwork. I much prefer to sit at a table in the restaurant area than the bar, which tends to fill up every night of the week with business men/women drinking BMC and getting loud. My wife and I sat at a nice private two-person table next to a window.
The food is pub food, maybe upscale pub food. I had a turkey sandwich with melted swiss and roasted peppers. My wife had a steak sandwich with prime ribe. They were both passable, but nothing to write home about. The fries were nice and crispy, but had a weird aftertaste suggesting they were fried in old oil. What increases the food score though, are their wings. As mentioned in other reviews, they are very very good. As is their french onion soup. In fact, rather than order an entree, I'd suggest getting an order of their wings along with a crock of onion soup.
The prices range from reasonable to pricey depending on your definition. The mugs they serve the beer in are larger than regular pints, though probably not the 20oz they advertize. The Chocolate Stouts were $6, while the Never Summer was $4.75.
Service was very attentive and brought our beer extremely fast.
I was very happy with our visit as the beer selection seems to have improved immensely in a rather short period of time. We go to a lot of movies and being across the street from Plainville's theater it's the perfect place to go afterwards for a pint and some wings to discuss it. It will be interesting to see what their "Winter Seasonal" list turns into when it becomes the "Spring Seasonal" list. Hopefully they maintain the high standard they set for themselves.
I can't say I'd go far out of my way to visit J. Timothy's (when Eli Cannon's is 20-25 minutes down the road), but it's a great spot to check out if you find yourself in the area.

The place is well described in previous reviews.
We went on a Sat. night at around 6:30 and the place was really crowded...we were told that it's always like that.
Decided our best shot at dinnner was at the bar.
Tap selection was pretty good ...we had Hooker IPA, Rogue Choc. Stout, Trois Pistoles and Brooklyn Winter Ale.All good ... in mugs except the Unibroue , which came in it's own chalice. We also saw Chimay(bottle) served in it's own chalice.
The bartender was very attentive....patiently got us smples and always quickly checked back with us eventhough she was super busy.
We had shepherd's pie and pork in bordelasie sauce...good portions and both good.
We will go back , maybe earlier , for lunch or a week night.
My only complaint was the noise level....but that's what you get when you eat in a packed bar. And disappointed to see the great majority ordering Bud-Mich Lites , when the bar was offering a lot of quality beers....C'est dommage, c'est la vie.

this was the warm up first stop on a white trash pub crawl.. figured we would hit some place with a moticum of class for good chow and brews before downing gueuze-like pbr from infected lines.
the structure itself looks like a 19th century carraige house.. expansive, two-floor lodgey building that boasts thick wooden beams, high ceilings and catwalks. the decor inside is authentic americana, pretty much in line with the 'e' they put at the end of the word 'tavern' in their name. the bar area is cozy enough, big u-shape with scattered, somewhat cramped tables. this night, there was an older gentleman playing acoustic tunes, not too loud. there is just something intrinsically wrong with a baby boomer playing his countryesque take on 'santeria' or a rollicking, cheery version of stone temple pilots' 'plush'. its nice enough, but it can quickly shift into cheesy pub-cliche surreal hell.
i was rather impressed with the beer selection. last time i was there, was during an octoberfest season.. and the taps were predominantly german (not really my thing, but not bad). this visit, there were 24 or so taps.. some highlights were hooker hopmeadow and munich lager, boulder never summer and hazed.., rogue chocolate stout and dead guy, ten penny & dirty penny from olde burnside, a beer from brooklyn brewery, a few spaten handles, bbc shabadoo, and your standard bmc lineup (although most of that swill was in bottles). i ordered a hopmeadow, never summer, and chocolate stout. all were in good condition, and served in their standard glassware (22oz dimpled mugs for 'large' or 12oz irish coffee glasses for 'small'). everything was on the colder side but no glasses were frosted.
WING ALERT: if you like wings, the buffalo-style dirt wings are for you. they coat wings thinly with buffalo sauce, fry it to a black char, and toss it again with fresh wing sauce. something different, and a single order is a good way to start any dinner. my wings were delicious as usual, and i followed it up with a hearty shepherds pie (enough for 3 meals and very tasty, a bargain IMHO at 13 bucks). i tried my friends mushroom ravioli and they seemed equally tasty, although the white sauce was a little thick and rich for my liking.
service was decent. the guy didn't know what hopmeadow IPA was until i said hooker, and he seemed to be really new. my friend noted that anyone who puts the drink tray down on the table to serve the drinks is an amateur at best and i had to agree. he was very attentive, though, despite a busy night and an ongoing post-bachelor party in the bar.
in short, i would recommend jt's to anyone who is looking for a place to bring the family while having a couple good beers (the sit-down dining area is a bit nicer.. full of plainville hillbillies who have struggled to dig out their one nice sweater).. especially recommended for those seeking out wings. beerwise, there are better places within 30 minutes, but this is clearly the best place in the plainville/southington/new britain area. if they keep up this many taps of craft beer, they are providing a wonderful service to the beer drinkers of ct.

I headed here recently for a Friday dinner out with a group of friends. Unbelievably, I lived across the street from it (could have walked!) for nearly 2 years and never went! Go figure!
After I was seated the first thing I asked for was the beer list. I was pleasantly surprised. I went with two other friends who are also BAs. We have very different beer tastes, and yet we were all satiated! I ended up settling on a Hoegaarden which of course I've had before but I had a hankering for.
J. Timothy's was recently renovated to include more seating which barely made a dent in the Friday evening crowd. You could very well wait upwards of 45 minutes for a table on a Friday. The atmosphere is cozy (you know - fireplaces, dark interior), resembling an old tavern (as the name suggests!). I didn't indulge in a full dinner but noshed on appetizers and delicious French onion soup. Prices are a little high but still reasonable.
This spot makes a great gathering place with friends, especially on a weekend, as long as you are willing to wait. The bar is busy nearly every night, but that's gotta be a good sign, right?

Checked this place out a few days after they reopened from the remodeling. I always liked it before, but was amazed at the additional area they opened up. The bar is about eight feet longer, and they added a few booths.
The two hundered year old building has a very comforting feel. The hardwood floors and rich dark colored wood. Dining room area is nicely wamred by two fireplaces.
The food is fantastic. They offer a few wing selections which are their best sellers. I recommend the dirt wings. Many other appetizers, entrees and sandwiches are just as good.
The beer selection is quite nice. They rotate their bottle selection to match the season. IPA's in summer, Octoberfest...self explanatory, etc. They carry a dozen tap beers, but mostly macros. My one reservation is seasonal bottles run about a dollar more per bottle then other bars.
Service at the bar is quite quick, however, if you are at a table in the lounge or the dinning room, you get only average service. Waitstaff will get you what you need from the kitchen, but not be as attentive to empty glasses.
Overall a definite winner in an area of chain food and family bars. Come for the beer selection and wings, and I promise you will find yourself coming back to get take out wing buckets for home gatherings. You will also like to stop in every few weeks to check out beer changes.
