Of the 8(soon to be 9) liquor stores in Airdrie, this is my favourite. It is on Edmonton Trail in Airdrie, along the same street as Canadian Tire and A&W. This is the oldest liquor store in Airdrie--it has been here since the 80's and doesn't look as though it is going to close anytime soon, as they have a steady base of customers. As you walk in, you will notice that the store makes no pretense of tidiness; no kidding, compared to all the new Co-op and Sobey's liquor stores, bright and clinically clean, Horseman has an old, well-established feeling to it. I guess nearly 20 years in the same store will contribute to that. That is actually why I love the Horseman--I never know what to expect, because they both surprise and disappoint sometimes. Occasionally the shelves are stocked with a bunch of good and unknown beers, and yet sometimes I go in to find them out of anything really exceptional. For instance, they were the first store in Airdrie to even THINK about bringing in Unibroue, and over the years I have come across stuff here I have never seen anywhere else. There are so many nooks and crannies in the store, and there is such a feeling of comfortable disorder in where they put stuff, so I spend quite some time just looking for what I ordered in. They have one large back cooler for mostly the big cases of swill, and then maybe 8 or 9 of the regular sized fridge-door types, and then a couple of racks of beer I guess they cannot fit into any refrigeration. They had an absolutely colossal load of McNally's Reserve this year--I have no idea how they sold it all, but it's gone. That is also what I love about them, the staff and owner are not afraid to order in whatever you want, and heck, they almost do it for you automatically if you are a regular customer. Even the shiny new Willow Park store here in Airdrie has a hard time ordering what I want. Quality is not exceptional simply because they have so much stock, and some of the beers on the shelf should be kept refrigerated, but I have never had much of a problem with dates or beer gone bad. The staff might seem a little aloof at first, until they know you, and then they are extremely friendly and willing to help. The selection for craft beer is better than average, certainly better than anything else in Airdrie. Last time I was in they had Trois Pistole and Brew Brother's Ambush IPA, Erdinger regular and dunkel, and some more that I buy regularly. The selection seems always in flux--I go back after two weeks and almost find something new without exception. (As an aside--their Scotch selection and Champagne selection are excellent.) Another boon is that this is the only store in Airdrie open till midnight every night of the week.
It is a store I love to support, since it is so well-established and unpredictable. Definitely my preferred stop in Airdrie for beer.

They have a lot of wine and a lot of whiskey but not much beer. Prices seem high to me. Had Chocolate Bunnny from Minhas Creek Brewery and Half Pints Stir Stick Stout I picked up, but $5 a large bottle for the former and $2.50 for the Stout, per bottle.
The girl was helpful looking for whiskies but just pointed to the beer area. most wer 6 paksor 12 paks- Guinness, Becks, etc. I was hoping to see more local or craft beer choices after reading other reviews.
Very few domestic beer choices.. Not impressed...

I have been to the Horseman in the past, but coming through Airdrie had to stop in again. It's easy to get to, right off the highway with lots of parking. It is a very large liquor store fill with all kinds of alcohol - lots of wine, spirits, scotch, etc. and of course beer. Large walk in cooler where most people pick up their Canadian/Coors Light, one wall is all fridge type coolers with lots of variety. They also have a shelf at the back of the store with some specialties that won't fit in coolers. Today I saw St. Barnadus, Cannery, Brew Brothers, and the Corsendonk gift pack. They always have something new or different for the customer. Staff has always been pleasant, asking if you found everything OK. The selection for beer (especially Canadian made) is better than average. I would rather support a small independant store than the big grocery chain stores. Definatley not my last visit.
