I should have known better, but my first night in Copenhagen after a long flight and long day I wanted to see Tivoli and get some dinner. I knew I'd pay a premium, but thought I'd get a nice meal in a nice setting. The setting was nice. The meal--and the beer--were not. They still only have Blonde and Amber lagers in 50 cl glasses. I'd hardly consider this place a brew house. My amber tasted like soap (and wasn't any better when the food eventually came.) I should know by now to trust my instincts.

Færgekroen Bryghus is located inside the amusement park "Tivoli" in Copenhagen. Tivoli is a great place and one of ther few preserved 19th century style amusemnet parks. Even if you are just coming for a beer you have to pay the entrance fee. In August 2005 the fee was DKK 65. Færgekroen's main attraction is the location. The brewpub is built on a deck reaching out over a small artificial lake with a mock pirate ship on the opposite shore. It's a great place to relax (in the summertime), with the distant sound of screaming people in a roller coaster as a back drop. But when it comes to the beer you could just as well pass this place by. It's a beer bake-off with only two kinds of beer: Blonde Lager and Amber Lager. My impression was that the staff don't really care much about beer brewing. They just chuck in the ingredients and trust the computer to produce the same old reliable stuff. The Blonde lager has a very heavy bread taste but the fist impression is the sugar deposit on your lips (or in your moustache if you sport one). The Amber lager is much the same but less bready and with a slight smell of yeast. To sum up: It's a great location but I can't recommed the beer.

This restaurant has existed inside Tivoli's walls for over 50 years. However, this season (under new ownership) it is a brewpub. You can see the brewing set-up as soon as you walk in. Six fermenters/lagering tanks and a mash/boil rig in front of them. The restaurant is situated in a quaint little spot by the little pond inside Tivoli. On a nice day, it is very relaxing to sit there with a beer, watching the ducks paddle by, and listening to people screaming on the rollercoaster and freefall tower.

Unfortunately, they don't have much of a beer selection. When I went there, they only had their two "flagship" beers: Blonde Lager and Amber Lager. Their intention, however, is to have one seasonaly beer on offer as well. This has apparently not materialized yet. I tried the Amber Lager and it was quite good. Fresh and unpasteurized/unfiltered. They serve them in 50cl tankards at 59 Kr a pop. A bit pricey, especially when you take into account that you also have to pay to get inside Tivoli (unless you borrow someone's annual pass like I did). The food is also on the expensive side at about 160 Kr for a main course.

If you're in CPH and are going to Tivoli anyway, it's probably worth stopping in for a beer, but the beer is not interesting enough to pay the 68.50 Kr entrance fee just to go to this brewpub.
