Was pretty excited that Sam Smith made a chocolate stout.
Pours a jet black that shows the tiniest bit of dark red when held up to a light. Average tan head.
Smells like a mixture of sourdough bread and melted semi-sweet chocolate chips and bittersweet chocolate.
Tastes very very chocolaty. Kind of like when chocolate is in the double boiler though when it is giving off vapors.
Was smooth and velvety on the palate.
Great beer but something I think I will only have once or with a big piece of triple chocolate cake.

550ml bottle into a pub style glass. Big thanks go to pmsawyer for gifting me with a bottle of this. The brew pours dark brown in color with a rich khaki froth atop about a finger strong that holds fairly decent leaving some stringy patches of lace sticking to the glass. Around the edges, some lighter brown clarity is seen.

The aroma is rich with cacao nibs coupled with a sweetness almost like lactose or splenda. There is a faint roasted grain aspect across the back that mingles with a scent that is quite reminiscent of something along the lines of root beer or cola. While cold this brew smells pretty nice, as it warms up it gets a little disjointed.

The flavor really drives home the chocolate with flavors of earthen cacao mixed with milk chocolate powder. The overall chocolate aspect is persistent throughout the experience but sadly the enjoyment is a bit short-lived. Instead of chocolate being a supporting role, it is seemingly candy-like and the follow-through is more like cola than stout. Some suggestions of vanilla are hinted in the aftertaste.

This is a medium bodied brew that is overall just strange. They certainly nailed the chocolate aspect but the sweetness seems artificial and unbalanced overall. I was very anxious to try this beer and I am very appreciate for the chance to try this Pete. However, it just didn't deliver like I have come to expect from other Samuel Smith brews.

$5.29 for a 550ml bottle. Pours out to a clear dark mahogany, forming a tall soapy tan head with very good retention and lacing. Moderate strong carbonation, ~3.0 carbs. The nose is redolent with tootsie roll fake chocolate smell, not really much more than that....Carob. The mouthfeel is medium-light bodied and somewhat cloying. The taste begins with tootsie roll, has some peanut in the middle, then tootsie roll in the finish. Very mild bitterness, quite sweet considering the lighter body. Minimal to absent roast flavor. Metallic finish with an aftertaste of saccharin.

This is a pretty gross beer. The obviously fake chocolate extract flavor doesn't sit well with the saccharin aftertaste and the metallic finish and the absolute lack of roast flavor. Would not buy it again or recommend it unless you're into "beers" like this. Ugh.

Good tasting beer, no aftertaste, smooth, great with pork, bacon, and deserts.
Good pour, head small, with good chocolate taste. Use a mug, very cold. I usually leave a small amount of water on the bottom of the mug, upside down in the freezer, to keep the brew cold when drinking

Poured from a bottle into a stout glass.

A: Dark, dark, dark. Medium brown 3 finger creamy head with plenty of lacing. Settled slowly leaving foam on the side of the glass. Leaves a nice layer of bubbles across the top as you drink all the way to the end of the glass.

S: CHOCOLATE! Rich, melt in the mouth dark chocolate! Are you sure this is beer and not a bottle of Hershey syrup?

T: Smooth. Bitter chocolate. Not too sweat. Yumm. Not much "traditional" stout beer flavor, but it's a really good taste. Taste lingers and aftertaste is consistant with the initial taste, just the chocolate flavor dissipates a little. Nothing harsh anywhere. Very drinkable, refreshing and entertaining.

M: Medium body, seems light compared to the color and smell, but that means you can enjoy more. NIce fizz on the tongue. Creamy but a bit less than other Samuel Smith stouts.

O: A delicious malt beverage with natural flavor added. If you're in the mood for chocolate then this will fit the bill! No really, I mean you won't need any candy, this beer will satisfy both a desire for a refreshing, quenching, delicious beer and calm your chocolate craving in the process.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: It created a head the size of the moon on my first pour. The head is light tan, and the body is very dark brown. A teensie bit of deep red-brown gets through when held up to light.

Smell: Chocolate right up front, cocoa nibs galore. Very sweet although a bit of roastiness hidden in the back. Almost like hot chocolate. Hops is very light, adds a bit of citrus.

Taste: Also very chocolatey. Some folks say they have a chocolate stout and leave out the chocolate -- Sam Smith did not. Somehow the flavors don't quite mesh for me. There's also some malt sweetness and maybe a little bit of yeast sourness. It's tolerable, but I think it needs something dark and charred to balance out the sweetness better. Or add a more rounded chocolate flavor profile. Just a little too sugary for me.

Mouthfeel: It's pretty thick and moderately bubbly. Leaves a bit of dryness in the back.

Overall: It's decent for the price, but like I said -- too sugary. Definitely a dessert beer.

Poured from a 550 ml bottle into a Sam Adams "perfect pint" glass. Code on bottle neck says SL14L1.

Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with some hints of ruby. Lots of rising bubbles and a solid three fingers of beige head with good retention. Leaves a lot of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A sweet and dark chocolate forward malty aroma. Dark roasted malts with big hints of cocoa nibs and dark and milk chocolate. Hints of coffee, vanilla, lactose, cream, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, grains, biscuit, yeast, and nuts. A considerable scent of sweet syrup and brown sugar. Subtle earthy and grassy hops in the background. Also a dark rum like scent of booze that adds to the sweetness. Smells like a decadent dessert.

Taste: Like its smells, a sweet and decadent dark taste of chocolate dark malts. Dark roasted malts with a huge taste of sweet dark and milk chocolate with cocoa nibs. Also tasting notes of cream, vanilla, lactose milk, and coffee along with notes of toast, grains, caramel, toffee, biscuit, nuts, and yeast. Added sweetness from maple syrup and some brown sugar along with some notes of dark rum like taste. Hops are pretty subtle with a little earthy grass towards the finish. A pretty good sweet stout taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Fairly sticky and syrupy but with a good creamy smoothness.

Overall: A very good chocolate forward milk/sweet stout. Good chocolate dessert sweetness that avoids becoming too cloying.

A - Pours a deep brown with ruby highlights. Creamy 1/4 inch mocha head with medium rings of lace.

S - Strong sweet chocolate malt aroma! Very reminiscent of chocolate milk.

T - Flavor profile is dominated by the chocolate malt. Very smooth and creamy with a definite lacto presence. Slight hop bitterness in the finish.

M - Thick bodied, but not like motor oil, with good carbonation.

O - Exactly what you would expect from the label. Great milk/sweet stout overall. One of thee best I've had. Highly recommended if you like milk/sweet stouts!

Pours like an effervescent home brewed root beer with a giant fluffy
white head. Deep dark brown, mostly opaque with a hint of red when held to the light. Nose is decidedly chocolate, some roasted malts,no hops here.

The taste is reminiscent of a chocolate egg cream (choc. syrup blended with cream and carbonated with seltzer) which is rich and exceptionally creamy, very sweet, drinks like a heavy duty root beer that has the vanilla around the edges.

Mouthfeel is slightly heavy, more of a sipper, and the aftertaste is a lush creamy chocolate sweetness that is pleasant but a little goes a long way. This is not only a sharing beer, this is a desert beer as well. Samuel Smith's quality is always top notch, however this stout falls into the specialty category given the high level of sweetness and richness.

Picked up a 550 ml bottle from AJ's in early February for $4.50. Bottled on 8-9-12.

Beer poured a dark brown with a nice off white head that is hanging around.

Nose is huge chocolate, very surprising considering this is a 9 month old brew.

Taste is slightly lactic and slightly bitter chocolate, sweet but not cloying. Hops are purely in the background doing their job keeping the sweetness in check.

Mouthfeel is light and slightly smooth.

Overall this is a well crafted brew by a world class brewer. It has been awhile since i had a Tadcaster but per the usual it was very well done brew!

Pitch black body light tan head leaves a fine evenly dispersed head coated around the sides of my chalice. Aroma milk chocolate all day, the lactose infusion combined with the organic chocolate sends this one to the Milky Way in Nestle/Hershey terms of course. Perceived sweetness on the nose did somebody just milk a cow? Tame English stout with semi sweet cream laden chocolate notes, not the worst or the best but damn tasty stout in a dessert kind of way. Mouthfeel is one word: creamy medium to light bodied ample even flowing carbonation not bad nothing cloying in the finish. Overall a tasty albeit a bit gimmicky beer, I'm good for one too dessert like for more not overly decadent but a nice cream/sweet stout balanced out with some semi sweet bitter dark chocolate additions.

A: Pours a dark brown color forming s big and aired beige head. Medium retention and lots of lingering lacings formed and left in the glass

S: A chocolate bomb, really. I've never drank a beer with such a strong smelk of chocolate. Also sweet malts, roasted malts and vanilla. Notes of chesnuts as well

T: Pretty much like the nose. Sweet upfront. Notes of chocolate, chocolate malts, roasted malts. A bit milky and lactic

M: Medium and creamy body. Medium to low carbonation. Lactic aftertaste

O: Great ale. Excelent example of Milk Stout and chocolate based Stout

Poured into a mug from a bomber. The pour resulted in an oily black liquid with a good amount of lovely tan head that dissipated fairly quickly, leaving delicate lacing. It smells like chocolate syrup: absolutely delicious and tantalizing to the taste buds. Mouthfeel is very smooth although slightly bubbly. Taste is sweet with a bitter chocolate taste, with a smooth coffee finish. Overall, this is a wonderful stout and entirely enjoyed.

A: Poured pitch black into snifter. Settled into a 1.5 finger tan head that lingered for quite a while. Head was velvety smooth with small bubbles. No light is getting though this beer.

S: Soo chocolatey. I smelled it when I popped the cap. Second whiff I smelled vanilla. I also sort of smell gas station slush puppies that I remember getting as a kid.

T: Not surprisingly, Chocolate! Cream soda. If you try real hard, you can tell you're drinking a beer and detect a hop

M: Really smooth. Medium-light bodied. Alcohol drying effect. It left my lips feeling sticky though, and I didn't care for that.

O: A good beer that I'm glad I was able to try. My buddy bought it for me. Not something I would seek out for myself. If you are looking for chocolate beer, I think you'd be hard pressed to find more of it in a beer. I personally just prefer to taste more in my beer that sweet chocolate.

Organic Chocolate Stout opens to an aroma that is immediately reminiscent of milk chocolate - the kind that Dove or Cadbury uses, rich with sugar and milk, almost oozing sweetness; or like a glass of heavy cream into which a God’s ransom of Lindt Chocolate Syrup (if such a thing existed, sigh) had been stirred – with a shovelful or two of high-quality caramel, and extremely subtle contrasting whiffs of coffee. The beer smells far more like a five-star dessert than anything else: handmade chocolate ice cream with chocolate and caramel syrups drizzled over a handmade chocolate gooey brownie, with a handmade graham cracker crumbled over the top. In short, the beer is sweet, gooey (even on the nose), rich, and amazingly full. If a candy bar actually smelled as good as this beer does, I’d be a very fat man. This does, of course, mean that there’s not much beer smell here, despite the fact that it’s a stout, but the incredible chocolaty aromas pretty much make up for it. If anything, however, the beer is too sweet, being off-balanced, and in need of another aroma to bring things back to reality.

On the tongue, the flavors do prove a bit better balanced, though the primary notes are still sweet milk chocolates, heavy on lactose and sugar and cream, and the beer is instantly reminiscent of handmade chocolate milk – the kind bought from a ‘50s diner, or reinvented by a five-star restaurant. The subtle contrasting notes include bits of pecan, as well as light coffee, and even a faint ashy presence, though this is fairly far down. Threads of chocolate liqueur add an alcoholic layer, though very lightly so, the 5% ABV barely announcing its presence. Faint bits of graham cracker add some bready notes. The aftertaste is a continuation of the main mouthful, though as the sugars die off a few bitter ashy, bready, and even faintly piney notes do appear, somewhat spoiling things by clashing with the chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium-light to medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, it’s difficult to imagine more chocolate flavor crammed into a beer, and if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, then this should be on your must-try list. It would also make an excellent dessert beer, or an ingredient in a good dessert or, perhaps, mole sauce. As a stout, though, it’s very sweet, and hardly any of the stout flavors come through, making things seem off-balance.

Poured a bottle of this into my trusty Lagunitas mason jar glass. I smelled the chocolate as soon as I opened this.
A: Dark, nice 1 to 2 finger head. Good lacing. Exactly what I was excepting
S: Chololate. Hints of vanilla and maybe malts and toffee. Did I mention CHOCOLATE!
T: More chocolate. Hints again of vanilla, caramel malts, and maybe, just maybe some dark fruit if you look for it. Sweet and rich which is what I was looking for.
M: Medium body, not as think as I was expecting or what i generally want in a stout, however as sweet and rich as this beer is the medium body suits it very well.
O: I love this brew. I have had several of these over the past few months and will always have a few on hand.
I do question the availability of this beer. Several bars in the greater Cleveland area have it (Winking Lizard for sure), several wine/beer stores and even many of the Giant eagles. I think this is a regular beer for Samuel Smith base on how many places here have it. I hope it is.

I've heard a rave review and a disappointed review from friends. Let's see where I fall.

A: Solid head, a bit clumpy. Nice deep opaque mahogany color.

S: Mmm, that smells good. Chocolate and butterscotch, both quite strong. I'd be quite inclined to eat or drink anything that smelled like this. Like mixing chocolate sauce, butterscotch sauce, and rum, and pouring that over vanilla ice cream.

T: Huh. This beer's odd. It's almost as if there are two separate beers here and rather than harmonizing, they sit apart from each other on the palate. One's rich, sweet, flat, and matches the sweet chocolate and butterscotch in the smell. The other one's dry, sharply carbonated, shows its alcohol, and is a bit bitter. Part cocoa powder bitterness, part hops. Neither is unpleasant, although if I were to choose one, I'd take the first. It's not out of balance, either. At least right now, I like it with reservations.

M: A bit thinner than I expected, and also a bit thinner than I think I'd want it to be.

I don't think there's any way this is topping Southern Tier's Choklat for me. However, I'll have to try it a couple more times to see if the strange flavor juxtaposition is more interesting or jarring.

A- Very dark brown, a little light comes in around the edges, with a billowing, creamy tan head that dissipated fairly quickly.

S- big notes of cocoa, and lactose sweetness. Smells like your house when you make brownies. Nice.

T- A very nice cocoa, think brownies that you just can't have one of. What I really enjoy about this is the hint of black raspberry you get. It's very feint, but it's there, and is a really enjoyable accent. Sweetness lingers long after the sip.

M- Needs to be thicker. Really quite thin for a stout, even at 5% abv.

A: Pours an opaque yet clear jet black in color with light amounts of visible carbonation and light cola brown highlights. The beer has a two finger tall creamy light tan head that slowly reduces to a couple of medium sized medium thick patches, a thick film covering the entire remaining surface of the beer, and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of chocolate milk, cocoa, and Hershey's syrup.

T: Upfront there are moderate to strong flavors of chocolate milk with some moderate notes of cocoa and some light to moderate flavors of Hershey's syrup. Light amounts of sweetness that lingers.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Creamy.

O: I really enjoyed this beer but it reminds me a bit of drinking Swiss Miss hot chocolate or Hershey's chocolate milk without quite as much lactose/milk sweetness. Easy to drink because of the lower ABV and lighter body.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a footed tulip.

A: Black. Pours about a half finger, foamy brown-white head. Quickly dissipates leaving merely a light ring around the rim of the glass. Spotty, uneven lacing, mostly retreats back into the body of the brew. Head renews fully with each pour.

S: A little coffee roasted malt and almond, and tons o' chocolate.

T: Light char with a little hop, and plenty of dark sweet chocolate. Offset with a touch of black licorice or pecan shell.

M: Light bodied. Sweet in the front, and bitter in the finish. Has something of a synthetic feel to it.

D: Not much resistance here, but there's a pungent aftertaste that will probably dictate a slower experience.

Atmosphere is pretty good. Dark hue, decent head, but some miniscule lacing. Nose is a really strong chocolate with some roasted malt components. Flavor is also hefty in the chocolate department. Mostly crowds out the remaining components. Not badly done. Overall, this is a good quaff.

Poured into a glass mug. The beer pours a creamy dark chocolate brown with a thick, light tan head. There's a ring of lacing left along the top of the beer after the head recedes. This lacing also travels down the glass during consumption. The aroma is strongly of chocolate and vanilla. There's some malt in the aroma as well, so the beer smells somewhat like what I would expect if you put something like Whoppers malted milk balls in a beer. The smell was inviting and the flavor is on the next level. There are those sweet chocolate notes up front that almost remind me of chocolate syrup on the first sip. Then those chocolate notes blend rather well with the malt backbone of this beer. Once again, my mind conjures up a less sweet version of Whoppers malted milk balls, but with more roastiness due to the fact that this is still a stout. The body is medium with a creamy mouthfeel. The carbonation is moderate and there is some light lingering aftertaste. The beer drinks well, making this an easy to drink dessert beer. This is an excellent beer.

Wow, what a great beer, and almost exactly what I imagined it would be when I bought it. This is the closest thing you will ever have to a chocolate soda. To start, the smell is absolutely wonderful and the only thing keeping me from giving it a 5 was that I just wanted it to be a tad stronger. The aroma is sweet milk chocolate with vanilla and coconut and a hint of cherries. Taste follows very close to this; sweet and chocolatey up front and finishes with some malt and yeast and a touch of coffee bitterness. Not terribly complex, but perfectly balanced. Body feels a bit thin for the style, but creamy none the less. This would be absolutely amazing on Nitro.Overall amazing, a treat for anyone who likes stouts, loves chocolate, or wants a not overly-sweet dessert beer.
