Dark black, rich yet thin this poured with a nice bubbly head that kept a bit of creaminess around the edge. The nose is straight chocolate, like a brownie, it so good I just wanted to keep my nose buried in the snifter. Cocoa and caramel are prominent in the aroma.

The taste is of cocoa, chocolate with hints of caramel. Tempered sweetness, nothing is overpowering yet I'm missing the maltiness of the stout. It has all the flavor of a nice dessert beer.

The only negative would be in the mouthfeel. Thin and fizzy it misses the thickness and meal like quality of a fine stout. No matter, I'm very happy with this offering from Samuel Smiths.

This is a beautiful, dark chocolaty beer with a good chocolate-cream head. Even cold, the smell of cocoa with some chocolate malt is strong. The beer is smooth, sweet, with chocolate overtones that seem like everything - cocoa, syrup, candy bars. One of the best chocolate ales I have ever tasted. The smooth velvety drink finishes good, leaving you with a chocolate aftertaste. Not just a desert beer, but a beer that is dessert.

550ml bottle into a pub style glass. Big thanks go to pmsawyer for gifting me with a bottle of this. The brew pours dark brown in color with a rich khaki froth atop about a finger strong that holds fairly decent leaving some stringy patches of lace sticking to the glass. Around the edges, some lighter brown clarity is seen.

The aroma is rich with cacao nibs coupled with a sweetness almost like lactose or splenda. There is a faint roasted grain aspect across the back that mingles with a scent that is quite reminiscent of something along the lines of root beer or cola. While cold this brew smells pretty nice, as it warms up it gets a little disjointed.

The flavor really drives home the chocolate with flavors of earthen cacao mixed with milk chocolate powder. The overall chocolate aspect is persistent throughout the experience but sadly the enjoyment is a bit short-lived. Instead of chocolate being a supporting role, it is seemingly candy-like and the follow-through is more like cola than stout. Some suggestions of vanilla are hinted in the aftertaste.

This is a medium bodied brew that is overall just strange. They certainly nailed the chocolate aspect but the sweetness seems artificial and unbalanced overall. I was very anxious to try this beer and I am very appreciate for the chance to try this Pete. However, it just didn't deliver like I have come to expect from other Samuel Smith brews.

$5.29 for a 550ml bottle. Pours out to a clear dark mahogany, forming a tall soapy tan head with very good retention and lacing. Moderate strong carbonation, ~3.0 carbs. The nose is redolent with tootsie roll fake chocolate smell, not really much more than that....Carob. The mouthfeel is medium-light bodied and somewhat cloying. The taste begins with tootsie roll, has some peanut in the middle, then tootsie roll in the finish. Very mild bitterness, quite sweet considering the lighter body. Minimal to absent roast flavor. Metallic finish with an aftertaste of saccharin.

This is a pretty gross beer. The obviously fake chocolate extract flavor doesn't sit well with the saccharin aftertaste and the metallic finish and the absolute lack of roast flavor. Would not buy it again or recommend it unless you're into "beers" like this. Ugh.
