Although this beer calls itself a nut brown I would call is more of a dark amber. Has an off white head sitting on top. Smell is of malt and esters but there is a sulfury note reminincent of wine and an unpleasant one at that. Taste is of roasty malt throughout. Hops are there for bitterness only. There is a slight fruity ester with a winey acidic twang but very mild. Moderately carbonated and thick syrupy body. As it is very mild on the palate it could make a great session beer.

Glass: New Belgium Globe.
Appearance: Mahagony red-brown, clear. Finger of course white head that lingered for about 5 minutes.
Smell: caramel, toffee, bread, metallic.
Taste: slightly bitter, slight caramel, toffee. Bitterness fades in aftertaste and with a deep exhale.
Mouthfeel: medium-light mouthfeel with high carbonation.
Overall: A decent aftertaste with too much bitterness and metallic taste in the forefront. Mouthfeel is pretty dissapointing as well. Overall, a good beer that I wouldnt turn downbut wouldnt seek out again.

A: Great presentation in the traditional 550 ml bottle with foil seal. Color when poured is dark brown with some red hues.
S: Along with the expected malt there is a subtly hop aroma, likely Fuggles which would be appropriate for this style.
T: Excellent bready malt flavors up front with some biscuit malt character as well. The beer finishes slightly hop bitter in the traditional English style, though mush less so that an English Pale Ale.
M: As with may English ales this really feels like you are drinking a beer. Not syrupy but a thick hearty mouth feel that compliments the malty body well.
O: This is essentially the category defining beer for an English style nut brown. Many American nut browns have moved towards more sweetness while Samuel Smith maintains the ideal rich malt and mellow hop balance.
